The Moral Code Of Las, Bryant Dawson Jan 2014

The Moral Code Of Las, Bryant Dawson

Kristi Schultz Broughton Liberal Arts Essay Contest

2014 Topic: Somewhere Between Right and Wrong

The distinction between what is right to do and what is callous or offensive marks many of our decisions and can shape our lives and the lives of those affected by our actions and attitudes for better or worse. Moral choices are pervasive; we encounter them in the occupations on which we may embark, the research we may perform, and the lives that we lead. There is no universal agreement on the principles that should guide our moral choices (e.g. many tend to equate what is right with personal advantage or with some …

Incorporating Real Science Into The Secondary Classroom: Aerosols And Climate Change, Lorentyna M. Harkness Jan 2014

Incorporating Real Science Into The Secondary Classroom: Aerosols And Climate Change, Lorentyna M. Harkness

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Climate science and climate change are included in the Next Generation Science Standards, curriculum standards that were released in 2013. How to incorporate these topics, especially climate change, has been a difficult task for teachers. A team of scientists are studying aerosols in the free troposphere; what their properties are, how they change while in the atmosphere and where they came from. Lessons were created based on this real, ongoing scientific research being conducted in the Azores. During these activities, students are exposed to what scientists actually do in the form of videos and participate in similar tasks such as …

The Study Of Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution Control Policy System, Qin Xu Jan 2014

The Study Of Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution Control Policy System, Qin Xu

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

As the agricultural non-point source pollution(ANPSP) has become the most significant threat for water environmental deterioration and lake eutrophication in China, more and more scientists and technologists are focusing on the control countermeasure and pollution mechanism of agricultural non-point source pollution. The unreasonable rural production structure and limited scientific management measures are the main reasons for acute ANSPS problems in China. At present, the problem for pollution control is a lack of specific regulations, which affects the government's management efficiency.

According to these characteristics and problems, this paper puts forward some corresponding policies. The status of the agricultural non-point source …

Impacts Of Climate Change On Soil Microorganisms In Northern Hardwood Forests, Carley Jane Kratz Jan 2014

Impacts Of Climate Change On Soil Microorganisms In Northern Hardwood Forests, Carley Jane Kratz

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

As global climate continues to change, it becomes more important to understand possible feedbacks from soils to the climate system. This dissertation focuses on soil microbial community responses to climate change factors in northern hardwood forests. Two soil warming experiments at Harvard Forest in Massachusetts, and a climate change manipulation experiment with both elevated temperature and increased moisture inputs in Michigan were sampled. The hyphal in-growth bag method was to understand how soil fungal biomass and respiration respond to climate change factors. Our results from phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analyses suggest that the hyphal in-growth bag method allows relatively pure …

Big Manistee River Tributaries As Potential Arctic Grayling Habitat, Brian M. Danhoff Jan 2014

Big Manistee River Tributaries As Potential Arctic Grayling Habitat, Brian M. Danhoff

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The Big Manistee River was one of the most well known Michigan rivers to historically support a population of Arctic grayling (Thymallus arctics). Overfishing, competition with introduced fish, and habitat loss due to logging are believed to have caused their decline and ultimate extirpation from the Big Manistee River around 1900 and from the State of Michigan by 1936. Grayling are a species of great cultural importance to Little River Band of Ottawa Indian tribal heritage and although past attempts to reintroduce Arctic grayling have been unsuccessful, a continued interest in their return led to the assessment of environmental conditions …

Variation In Chemosensory Behavior In Ecologically Divergent Populations Of The Cactophilic Drosophila Mojavensis, Jonathan Sullivan Jan 2014

Variation In Chemosensory Behavior In Ecologically Divergent Populations Of The Cactophilic Drosophila Mojavensis, Jonathan Sullivan

Honors Capstone Projects and Theses

Alterations to a population’s ecology can contribute to adaptation events by promoting mechanisms that provide the greatest fitness in an environment. These aforementioned promotions occur in the form of molecular modification, specifically through some form of gene expression, and can ultimately have effects on behavioral responses. This process of gene expression depends on environmental conditions, thus similar genes can undergo varying intensities of expression depending on the ecology in question. Long term adaptation events within ecology diverged populations may eventually result in reproductive isolation mechanisms—restricting gene flow and thus preventing hybridization. Once populations have lost the ability to successfully reproduce …

Palivizumab Administration Decreases Recurrent Wheeze, Shelly Daniels Jan 2014

Palivizumab Administration Decreases Recurrent Wheeze, Shelly Daniels

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Children who have been infected with Respiratory Syncytial Virus have a higher incidence of wheeze-associated clinic visits and hospitalizations compared to children without previous RSV exposure. The purpose of this study is to determine if palivizumab, an immunoglobulin injection used to prevent RSV infections, can decrease the incidence of recurrent wheezing in children. The review of literature will follow male and female children from infancy to age 13 who were treated with palivizumab and compare these children to patients with similar demographics that were not treated with palivizumab to determine if there is any difference in incidence of wheezing. The …

Everything we know about the universe rests on the foundation of mathematics. Somehow, though, the magic of mathematics – the true power of numbers and their beautiful wildness – gets lost in math class. Children, our most magical thinkers, get turned off math in grade school and miss out on a language through which they could learn to read and change the world. VCU Math In Motion will generate a creative, dynamic STEM education initiative within the Richmond community using an innovative curriculum and a customized mobile unit to bring the beauty of math to Richmond region school children in …

Disciplinarity And Trandisciplinarity In The Study Of Knowledge, Jay H. Bernstein Jan 2014

Disciplinarity And Trandisciplinarity In The Study Of Knowledge, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

Scholarly inquiry about the nature and significance of knowledge has been shaped by disciplinary traditions and priorities that define “knowledge” differently and result in disconnected literatures. In the mid to late twentieth century, library science educator Jesse Shera sought to bridge the conceptual gap between epistemological and sociological approaches to knowledge in proposing a new discipline he called social epistemology. Around the same time, long-term projects by the economist Fritz Machlup and the physical chemist turned philosopher of science Michael Polanyi did not merely combine existing disciplinary approaches but transcended conventional frameworks for conceptualizing knowledge. These scholars can be viewed …

Stimuli-responsive multimodality imaging agents have broad potential in medical diagnostics. Herein, we report the development of a new class of branched-bottlebrush polymer dual-modality organic radical contrast agents—ORCAFluors—for combined magnetic resonance and near-infrared fluorescence imaging in vivo. These nitroxide radical-based nanostructures have longitudinal and transverse relaxation times that are on par with commonly used heavy-metal-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Furthermore, these materials display a unique compensatory redox response: fluorescence is partially quenched by surrounding nitroxides in the native state; exposure to ascorbate or ascorbate/glutathione leads to nitroxide reduction and a concomitant 2- to 3.5-fold increase in fluorescence emission. …

Slimmer, Brighter, And Nearly Perfect: The New Big History Textbook Is Here, Mojgan Behmand

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Rarely has the appearance of a new textbook been the cause of such delight as broke out amongst the First Year Experience faculty at Dominican University of California in August 2013. The book that triggered such reaction is a seemingly unassuming volume, Big History: Between Nothing and Everything (2013), written by historians David Christian, Cynthia Stokes Brown, and Craig Benjamin, and published by McGraw-Hill. Why was the book greeted with such enthusiasm, you might ask? Was it that the world needed another textbook on history? That the Dominican faculty felt a special bond with one of the authors, Dominican professor …
