Haptic Interaction In 3d Stereoscopic User Interfaces, Heather Petrow
Honors Thesis Collection
Haptic feedback is an area of technology that utilizes the sense of touch, by providing tactile interaction. It has been integrated into gaming consoles and mobile devices, and has been researched for its potential in programs that range from medical training simulations to collaborative workspaces. 3D stereo display is another growing facet of technology that is reexamining the possibilities of the user experience. The zSpace system is a computing hardware platform that simulates realistic, holographic, 3D stereoscopic vision. Using this system, this research project aimed to study how haptic feedback can enhance the user interface and understanding of 3D virtual …

Educating For Femininity? Reform Of Working And Middle Class Girls' Education In Victorian England, Daisy Dowdall
Educating For Femininity? Reform Of Working And Middle Class Girls' Education In Victorian England, Daisy Dowdall
Honors Thesis Collection
Working and middle-class girls’ education underwent significant reform in Victorian England. These reforms have been widely studied, with scholars divided into two broad historiographical schools: one that emerged in the late 1970s and places emphasis on the theory behind the reform to argue that little changed, and one that developed around 1990 and focuses on tangible practical change to demonstrate that a transformation did indeed occur.
The purpose of this thesis is to bridge the gap between these two bodies of scholarship, examining the significance of girls’ educational reform from the subjective positions of some working-class and middle-class girls, as …
From Theory To Post-Theory And Beyond: Politics & Film, Ana Lomtadze
From Theory To Post-Theory And Beyond: Politics & Film, Ana Lomtadze
Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis explores film theory’s two modes of existence as conceptualized by Theorists and Post-Theorists. While the former sees film as primarily an ideological apparatus and the audience as its passive or resistant consumer, the latter regards film as an empirical object and conceptualizes spectators from a cognitivist standpoint. I engage critically with various texts from Theory and Post-Theory to ask larger metatheoretical questions about film theory’s ontological character. In particular, I reflect on its nature and function through two angles—film theory’s relationship with politics and engagement with individual films.

The 4Shooter is a prototype dark matter detector built by the Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) collaboration. The aim of the collaboration is to observe dark matter with directional sensitivity by measuring the recoil directions of nuclei struck by dark matter particles. The 4Shooter is a single time projection chamber containing CF4 gas, with both optical (CCD and photomultiplier tube) and charge readout. This paper describes the 4Shooter and presents results from the commissioning of the detector in a surface laboratory.

The Pou Factor Ventral Veins Lacking/Drifter Directs The Timing Of Metamorphosis Through Ecdysteroid And Juvenile Hormone Signaling, Cece Cheng, Amy Ko, Leila Chaieb, Takashi Koyama, Prioty Sarwar, Christen K. Mirth, Wendy A. Smith, Yuichiro Suzuki
Faculty Research and Scholarship
Although endocrine changes are known to modulate the timing of major developmental transitions, the genetic mechanisms underlying these changes remain poorly understood. In insects, two developmental hormones, juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysteroids, are coordinated with each other to induce developmental changes associated with metamorphosis. However, the regulation underlying the coordination of JH and ecdysteroid synthesis remains elusive. Here, we examined the function of a homolog of the vertebrate POU domain protein, Ventral veins lacking (Vvl)/Drifter, in regulating both of these hormonal pathways in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Tenebrionidae). RNA interference-mediated silencing of vvlexpression led to both precocious …

Breaking Constraint: Axial Patterning In Trichechus (Mammalia: Sirenia), Emily A. Buchholtz, Kaisa L. Wayrynen, Iris W. Lin
Faculty Research and Scholarship
Meristic variation is often limited in serially homologous systems with high internal differentiation and high developmental modularity. The mammalian neck, an extreme example, has a fixed (at seven) count of diversely specialized segments. Imposition of the mammalian cervical constraint has been tentatively linked to the origin of the diaphragm, which is muscularized by cells that migrate from cervical somites during development. With six cervical vertebrae, the genus Trichechus (manatee) has apparently broken this constraint, although the mechanism of constraint escape is unknown. Hypotheses for the developmental origin of Trichechus cervical morphology include cervical rib 7 repatterning, a primaxial/abaxial patterning shift, …

Phenoxybenzamine Is Neuroprotective In A Rat Model Of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Thomas Rau, Aakriti Kothiwal, Annela Rova, Joseph F. Rhoderick, David J. Poulsen
Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Phenoxybenzamine (PBZ) is an FDA approved α-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist that is currently used to treat symptoms of pheochromocytoma. However, it has not been studied as a neuroprotective agent for traumatic brain injury (TBI). While screening neuroprotective candidates, we found that phenoxybenzamine reduced neuronal death in rat hippocampal slice cultures following exposure to oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD). Using this system, we found that phenoxybenzamine reduced neuronal death over a broad dose range (0.1 μM–1 mM) and provided efficacy when delivered up to 16 h post-OGD. We further tested phenoxybenzamine in the rat lateral fluid percussion model of TBI. When administered …
