Hospice Providers Awareness Of The Benefits And Availability Of Single-Fraction Palliative Radiotherapy, Jessica Schuster, Tatiana Han, Mitchell S. Anscher, Drew Moghanaki
Hospice Providers Awareness Of The Benefits And Availability Of Single-Fraction Palliative Radiotherapy, Jessica Schuster, Tatiana Han, Mitchell S. Anscher, Drew Moghanaki
Radiation Oncology Publications
Radiotherapy effectively palliates malignant sources of pain. However, once enrolled on hospice, patients are rarely referred for this treatment. To develop educational strategies that can improve access to care, a survey of hospice providers investigated potential misconceptions about its benefits and availability. Individual surveys were distributed to administrators, nursing directors, and medical directors at 16 licensed hospices within 25 miles of a radiation oncology facility. Ninety-three percent of hospice professionals stated radiotherapy provides pain relief and is appropriate for patients with more than 1 month of life expectancy. However, less than 1% of their cancer patients had been referred to …

Mitochondrial Dna Variation In The Eastern Pondmussel, Ligumia Nasuta (Bivalvia: Unionoida), In The Great Lakes Region, Mariah Wild Scott, Matthew T. Begley, Robert A. Krebs, David T. Zanatta
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Most freshwater mussel species in the Great Lakes colonized the region from the Mississippi River basin and few appear to have colonized from Atlantic coast rivers. The Eastern Pondmussel, Ligumia nasuta, is widespread along the Atlantic coast but occurs elsewhere only in the Great Lakes, suggesting that it is one of the few Great Lakes species of Atlantic origin. Great Lakes populations are now imperiled following invasion of the lakes by dreissenid mussels. We examined patterns of diversity in the mitochondrial CO1 and ND1 genes in L. nasuta populations in the Great Lakes and in Atlantic coast rivers. Genetic diversity …

Circadian Rhythms Affect Electroretinogram, Compound Eye Color, Striking Behavior And Locomotion Of The Praying Mantis Hierodula Patellifera, Aaron E. Schirmer, Frederick R. Prete, Edgar S. Mantes, Andrew F. Urdiales, Wil Bogue
Biology Faculty Publications
Many behaviors and physiological processes oscillate with circadian rhythms that are synchronized to environmental cues (e.g. light onset), but persist with periods of ~24 h in the absence of such cues. We used a multilevel experimental approach to assess whether circadian rhythms modulate several aspects of the visual physiology and behavior of the praying mantis Hierodula patellifera. We used electroretinograms (ERGs) to assess compound eye sensitivity, colorimetric photographic analyses to assess compound eye color changes (screening pigment migration), behavioral assays of responsiveness to computer-generated prey-like visual stimuli and analyses of locomotor activity patterns on a modified treadmill apparatus. Our results …

We propose to synthesize and characterize magnetic microbubbles for examining the use of magnetic microbubbles for targeted drug delivery. Using magnetic microbubbles as carriers, we will test how well drugs can be dispersed by means of ultrasound and hyperthermia.
Direct Type I Ifn But Not Mda5/Tlr3 Activation Of Dendritic Cells Is Required For Maturation And Metabolic Shift To Glycolysis After Poly Ic Stimulation, Austin Pantel, Angela Teixeira, Elias K. Haddad
Direct Type I Ifn But Not Mda5/Tlr3 Activation Of Dendritic Cells Is Required For Maturation And Metabolic Shift To Glycolysis After Poly Ic Stimulation, Austin Pantel, Angela Teixeira, Elias K. Haddad
Publications
Type I interferons (IFNs) play an important role in direct antiviral defense as well as linking the innate and adaptive immune responses. On dendritic cells (DCs), IFNs facilitate their activation and contribute to CD8+ and CD4+ T cell priming. However, the precise molecular mechanism by which IFNs regulate maturation and immunogenicity of DCs in vivo has not been studied in depth. Here we show that, after in vivo stimulation with the TLR ligand poly IC, IFNs dominate transcriptional changes in DCs. In contrast to direct TLR3/mda5 signaling, IFNs are required for upregulation of all pathways associated with DC …
Estimating The Amount Of Information Conveyed By A Population Of Neurons, Marshall Crumiller
Estimating The Amount Of Information Conveyed By A Population Of Neurons, Marshall Crumiller
Knight Laboratory
Recent advances in electrophysiological recording technology have allowed for the collection of data from large populations of neurons simultaneously. Yet despite these advances, methods for the estimation of the amount of information conveyed by multiple neurons have been stymied by the “curse of dimensionality”–as the number of included neurons increases, so too does the dimensionality of the data necessary for such measurements, leading to an exponential and, therefore, intractible increase in the amounts of data required for valid measurements. Here we put forth a novel method for the estimation of the amount of information transmitted by the discharge of a …

The Feminine Personification Of Death In Gustave Moreau’S Evening And Sorrow, May Johnson
The Feminine Personification Of Death In Gustave Moreau’S Evening And Sorrow, May Johnson
The Corinthian
This paper will argue that Moreau’s depiction of the female embodies the seductive and destructive nature of death which preoccupied the arts and literature of the late nineteenth-century. Moreau’s Evening and Sorrow, effectively conveys the increased interest in emotions, and psychology, as a counter-action to the predominance of natural sciences, during the late-nineteenth century.

Rna-Seq Analysis Reveals A Six-Gene Soxr Regulon In Streptomyces Coelicolor, Nawar Naseer, Joshua A. Shapiro, Monica Chander
Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship
The redox-regulated transcription factor SoxR is conserved in diverse bacteria, but emerging studies suggest that this protein plays distinct physiological roles in different bacteria. SoxR regulates a global oxidative stress response (involving >100 genes) against exogenous redox-cycling drugs in Escherichia coli and related enterics. In the antibiotic producers Streptomyces coelicolor and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, however, SoxR regulates a smaller number of genes that encode membrane transporters and proteins with homology to antibiotic-tailoring enzymes. In both S. coelicolor and P. aeruginosa, SoxR-regulated genes are expressed in stationary phase during the production of endogenously-produced redox-active antibiotics. These observations suggest that SoxR evolved …
Ballast Water Samples As "Scientific Evidence”, Jennie Folkunger
Ballast Water Samples As "Scientific Evidence”, Jennie Folkunger
NSBWO
The Ballast Water Management Convention was established as a response to the global issue of the spread of invasive species. The entry into force of the Convention is supposedly imminent, but many issues remain to be solved to ensure its success in preventing the spread of invasive species. Considering the implications involved, it is of great importance for the success of the Convention that sampling procedures to determine compliance are robust and reliable. Further, sampling results must gain acceptance as scientific evidence and basis for enforcement actions. The IMO has produced guidelines and recommendations that are to be evaluated during …

Chmp1 Negatively Regulates Epidermal Growth Factor Signaling In The Drosophila Wing, Meagan Elisabeth Valentine
Chmp1 Negatively Regulates Epidermal Growth Factor Signaling In The Drosophila Wing, Meagan Elisabeth Valentine
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
A critical step in cellular signaling through transmembrane receptors is the down-regulation of activated receptors through the multivesicular body (MVB) pathway to the lysosome. MVB generation is mediated by the highly conserved ESCRT (0, I, II, and III) protein complexes. Though the ESCRT-III complex provides the core function of the ESCRT machinery, it is the least characterized of the ESCRT complexes. The Chmp1 protein is an ESCRT-III component and a putative tumor suppressor that has been linked to pancreatic and renal cancers in humans. However, published data on Chmp1 activity are conflicting and its role during tissue development is not …

Shape Evolution And Sexual Dimorphism In The Mandible Of The Dire Wolf, Canis Dirus, At Rancho La Brea, Alexandria L. Brannick
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Rancho La Brea tar pits are a classic fossil lagerstätten, famous for the deposition of episodic accumulations of large numbers of fossils over short intervals in the late Pleistocene. I analyzed 157 Canis dirus (dire wolf) hemi-mandibles from Rancho La Brea through a 2D landmark-based morphometric analysis to test for size and shape changes through time. I scored 16 landmarks on each mandible gathered from four pits of different ages: 61/67 (~13-14 thousand years ago [ka]), 13 (~17-18 ka), 2051 (~26 ka), and 91 (~28 ka). Analyses indicate size does change through time, and shares a broad correlation with …
Scandalous Deception In The Castle: An Examination Of The Gender Performance Through The Bedtrick Trope In Arthurian Literature, Abby Louise Daniel
Scandalous Deception In The Castle: An Examination Of The Gender Performance Through The Bedtrick Trope In Arthurian Literature, Abby Louise Daniel
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The bedtrick – mistaken identity in a sexual encounter – is a comic motif employed by medieval, renaissance and modern storytellers. While modern readers tend to recognize this motif as (at best) a disturbing sexual escapade and (at worst) rape, the scholarship on mistaken identity in medieval literature still generally glosses over the bedtrick as a moment of comedy. My thesis examines the literary trope of the bedtrick through the critical lens of Judith Butler’s performativity theory, and the motives behind this form of deception and the modern implications. Furthermore, the bedtrick trope is explored in Malory’s Le Morte Darthur …
Integration Of Gamification Into The Classroom And The Reception By Students, Zoe Stokes
Integration Of Gamification Into The Classroom And The Reception By Students, Zoe Stokes
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of the research is to change the way the traditional classroom works and how students are taught. With the rise in popularity of video games many people have begun to integrate elements of games into everyday life. This is what is known as gamification. We wanted to do this with the classroom and see whether or not students were receptive to it. In order to do this we had to look at the elements of video games that we wanted to use and then try and successfully integrate them into the class. We also had to change several …
Development Of Moral Didacticism In Children: A Cross-Cultural Study, Sixtus Obinna Iwuji
Development Of Moral Didacticism In Children: A Cross-Cultural Study, Sixtus Obinna Iwuji
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The use of folktales and fables in explaining the physical and spiritual worlds to children is cross-cultural, and precedes recorded history. Prior studies indicate a developmental process in children’s understanding of fables and folktales (Jose, D’Anna, & Krieg, 2005; Narvaez, Gleason, Mitchell, & Bentley, 1999). However, no known study has examined whether this developmental process is cross-cultural or culture specific. No known study also, has examined whether children as young as 6 years of age are aware that fables and folktales are non-historical. The present study fills these observed gaps by examining moral didacticism in children aged 6-11 years. The …
Subthreshold Toxic Effects Of Atrazine And Three Degradates On Behavior In Procambarus Clarkii, Carol B. Starkey
Subthreshold Toxic Effects Of Atrazine And Three Degradates On Behavior In Procambarus Clarkii, Carol B. Starkey
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Atrazine is among the most heavily applied pesticides worldwide, and recent evidence suggests that it may be unsafe at environmental levels. It is a known endocrine disruptor and a suggested neurotoxin. The US EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) is 3 μg/L for human ingestion and 200 μg/L for limited human exposure. Several environmentally persistent degradates have been identified, including deethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA) and hydroxyatrazine (HA). No MCLs have been established for these degradates, although some are suggested toxins. Thus, there remains concern for the risk associated with the presence of atrazine and its degradates in the environment. Currently little …
Examining The Theoretical Consequences Of A Post-Feminist Media Culture, Jedidiah N. Bailey
Examining The Theoretical Consequences Of A Post-Feminist Media Culture, Jedidiah N. Bailey
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Since the early 1990s, feminist scholars have declared that a post-feminist media culture has arisen throughout the Westernized world to attack the ideas and values promoted by feminists and the second-wave feminist movement that became established in the late 1960s and 70s. Consequently, this study is designed to gauge the influence that these media have in shaping the attitudes of young college women (in the 18-25 year old demographic) toward feminism and key women‟s rights issues. In order to better understand whether post-feminist media are able to detract support from the feminist movement, this study attempts to quantify the relationship …
Discourse Analysis Of Interpersonal Features In Esl And Jsl Textbooks, Yukina Takahira
Discourse Analysis Of Interpersonal Features In Esl And Jsl Textbooks, Yukina Takahira
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Textbooks play an important role in language classrooms. They serve as models for language use in a target community and significantly influence language learners in their development of language use and perceptions of the target community. In traditional grammar teaching, teachers seldom look into linguistic choices at the discourse level and mainly use language textbooks to focus on grammatical accuracy at the sentence level. Language cannot be divorced from the context and culture of its use; contextual and cultural aspects of language are inherent in discourse. Language textbooks provide not only the needed linguistic resources, but also reflect the interpersonal …
Examining The Effects Of Liming On Gyrinophilus Porphyriticus With A Comparison Of Multiple Sampling Methods, Elise Marie Edwards
Examining The Effects Of Liming On Gyrinophilus Porphyriticus With A Comparison Of Multiple Sampling Methods, Elise Marie Edwards
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Environmental acidification is affecting stream-associated species around the globe. As a result, different management strategies have been implemented to deal with acidification resulting from acid rain and acid mine drainage. Adding limestone to streams attempts to reverse the effects of acidification. While liming increases the pH of many acidic environments, studies involving the effects of liming on different animal species have shown mixed results. In this study, I examined the effects of liming on Gyrinophilus porphyriticus (the Spring Salamander) abundance and I also determined the best method of detection for G. porphyriticus. From June 10th to September 1st 2013, I …
Using Ailuropoda Melanoleuca As A Model Species For Studying The Ecomorphology Of Paranthropus, Ryan Andrew King
Using Ailuropoda Melanoleuca As A Model Species For Studying The Ecomorphology Of Paranthropus, Ryan Andrew King
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) have cranial morphology similar to the extinct hominin genus Paranthropus which makes them an excellent model species when studying Paranthropus diet. Both species have wide skulls with flared zygomatic arches adapted for chewing. To gain insight into possible food sources of Paranthropus, I investigated the giant panda’s specialized diet of bamboo. The toughness, hardness, and stiffness of various bamboo species was determined to assess mechanical challenges facing giant pandas during feeding. Bamboo is thought to be tough, but studies on such properties and how they apply to mastication of giant pandas are largely …

The Natural Life History Of Cambarus (Puncticambarus) Smilax, The Greenbrier Crayfish, Paul William Hughes
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The natural life history of Cambarus (Puncticambarus) smilax, the Greenbrier Crayfish, was studied in West Fork of the Greenbrier River and in Thorny Creek, a tributary of the main stem of the Greenbrier River. The Greenbrier Crayfish gets its name from the Greenbrier River watershed where it is thought to occur exclusively. Among described members of the subgenus Puncticambarus, C. smilax is a sister taxon most similar to Cambarus (Puncticambarus) robustus. Monthly collections were made within the two study sites, from August 2010 to July 2011. Collecting techniques included dip-netting, seine-netting, and hand collecting. Cambarus smilax and all other species …
Identification And Characterization Of Downstream Effector Protein(S) Regulated By P53 And Prb, Miranda B. Carper
Identification And Characterization Of Downstream Effector Protein(S) Regulated By P53 And Prb, Miranda B. Carper
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
A commonality among cancer types is the high frequency of mutations that inhibit or alter signaling of the p53 and pRb (Retinoblastoma) tumor suppressors. These genes regulate processes vital for cancer suppression such as apoptosis, senescence, and cell cycle arrest among others. Loss of both p53 and pRb promotes processes that support cancer progression and is associated with decreased patient survival and increased rates of tumor reoccurrence. Although data points to the ability of p53 and pRb to collaborate and to inhibit tumorigenesis, it remains unclear how p53 and pRb cooperate toward this task. Using RNA expression profiling, 179 p53 …
