Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
F rom 2011 through 2014, the Texas Department of Transportation collaborated with Prewitt and Associates, Inc., to investigate an isolated grave in a remote area alongside FM 481 in Maverick County, Texas. An initial archeological investigation confirmed that the location was a historic grave, and archival records revealed that it contained the remains of Salvador Camarena, a Mexican citizen who died in Texas in January 1950. Additional research identified Camarena’s son and other family members living in Mexico, California, and Texas. With the family’s permission, the burial remains were exhumed, examined, and reinterred at La Marque Cemetery in Galveston County, …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
A preliminary archeological investigation was conducted in 2008 at Roberts Cemetery near Troy, Texas, as part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s planned expansion of Interstate Highway 35. Mechanical trenching discovered one unmarked grave near the highway right of way, and this led to an extensive mechanical search of the eastern edge of the cemetery in 2012. Following the removal of the southbound access road and thick layer of artificial fill, five additional unmarked graves were discovered. Of the six unmarked graves, two are located in the cemetery property and were left in place, but the four burials inside the …

CRHR: Archaeology
As the costs associated with the collection of 3D data continue to plummet, there is little doubt that the number of available archaeology-related 3D datasets will increase dramatically in the coming decade. While our analytical procedures continue to evolve as new applications are contemplated, analyses of 3D data are increasing in frequency within the archaeological literature. In this article, we seek to provide a brief overview of a few examples from our own research and explore some possibilities that may add value to existing collections. In the following pages, we discuss some of the ways that 3D data have been …

This cross-sectional study explores the relationships between children’s F− exposure from drinking groundwater and urinary F− concentrations, combined with dental fluorosis (DF) in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) Valley. We examined the DF prevalence and severity among 491 children (10 to 15 years old) who are lifelong residents of 33 rural communities in which groundwater concentrations of F− cover a wide range. A subset of 156 children was selected for urinary F− measurements. Our results showed that the mean F− concentrations in groundwater were 8.5 ± 4.1 mg/L (range: 1.1–18 mg/L), while those in urine …

Prediction Of Total Phenols, Condensed Tannins, And 3-Deoxyanthocyanidins In Sorghum Grain Using Near-Infrared (Nir) Spectroscopy, Linda Dykes, Leo Hoffmann Jr., Ostilio Portillo-Ridriguez, William L. Rooney, Lloyd W. Rooney
INTSORMIL Scientific Publications
The reported high phenolic levels in sorghum have led an interest from sorghum breeding programs in developing and identifying germplasms with high phenolic levels, which require screening a large number of samples to find those with the highest levels. Since wet chemistry screening methods are slow, expensive, and destructive, the use of NIR calibration curves could be an alternative. The objectives of this project were to determine the variation range in total phenols, condensed tannins, and 3- deoxyanthocyanidin levels in a diverse set of sorghum genotypes and to assess the predictive value of NIR curves to estimate these compounds in …

Abstract
Background
CXCL12/CXCR4 transactivation of epidermal growth factor family receptors in lipid raft membrane microdomains on cell surface is thought to mediate tumor growth and subsequent development of metastatic disease. CTCE-9908 is a known inhibitor of CXCR4. Herein, we tested the efficacy of CTCE-9908 in inhibiting prostate cancer cell growth, invasion, and metastasis.
Methods
We used a panel ofin vitroassays utilizing human prostate cancer cell lines and anin vivoorthotopic prostate cancer model to assess the anti-tumoral activity of CTCE-9908.
Results
We demonstrated that (a) CTCE-9908 treatment resulted in no significant change in the growth of PC-3 and C4-2B cells; (b) …

Antibacterial Responses Of Retinal Müller Glia: Production Of Antimicrobial Peptides, Oxidative Burst And Phagocytosis, Pawan Singh, Melissa J. Shiha, Ashok Kumar
Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship
Abstract
Background
We have previously shown that, in response to microbial infection, activated Müller glia secrete inflammatory cytokines/chemokines and exhibit antimicrobial properties. The aim of this study is to understand the mechanisms and the key components involved in this response.
Methods
Immortalized human retinal Müller glia (MIO-M1 cells) were challenged with Staphylococcus (S) aureus, the leading cause of severe intraocular infection followed by RT2 profile PCR array analysis. The expression of human β-defensin 1 (HBD1), 2 (HBD2), 3 (HBD3), hepcidine and cathelicidin LL37 was checked by RT-PCR and quantified by Taqman® qPCR. The expression of AMPs was confirmed at …

An analytical procedure for the simultaneous determination of cyanide and thiocyanate in swine plasma was developed and validated. Cyanide and thiocyanate were simultaneously analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in negative ionization mode after rapid and simple sample preparation. Isotopically labeled internal standards, Na13C15N and NaS13C15N, were mixed with swine plasma (spiked and nonspiked), proteins were precipitated with acetone, the samples were centrifuged, and the supernatant was removed and dried. The dried samples were reconstituted in 10 mM ammonium formate. Cyanide was reacted with naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde and taurine to form N-substituted …

Diffuse Reflectance Of Foams, M. A. Devetzoglou, J. R. G. Evans
Diffuse Reflectance Of Foams, M. A. Devetzoglou, J. R. G. Evans
Journal of Marine Research
There have been few studies of the optical properties of foams but the results of these investigations are of particular relevance to current discussions about climate restoration by means of oceanic foam because they indicate the influence of foam raft number on albedo. The diffuse reflectance of foams prepared from eight surfactants was measured in a 0°/45° geometry with a collimated, solar simulation light source and a photodiode by reference to barium sulphate white standards. Reflectance, or albedo, in the range of 0.5 to 0.59 was recorded for foams prepared with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), methyl cellulose, and TWEEN 20 …
Some Influences Of Remote Topography On Western Boundary Currents, Michael A. Spall
Some Influences Of Remote Topography On Western Boundary Currents, Michael A. Spall
Journal of Marine Research
The influence of topography in a basin interior on the separation and time-dependence of strongly nonlinear western boundary currents is explored using a shallow water numerical model and scaling theory. In the linear limit, the western boundary current follows the western boundary to the latitude of the gap in the interior topography where it then separates from the coast and flows eastward in a narrow jet. As nonlinearity is increased, the flow initially remains steady but develops a series of stationary meanders extending off the western boundary at the separation latitude. For strongly nonlinear flows the solutions become time-dependent. The …
Symmetric Instability Of Cross-Stream Varying Currents, Joseph Pedlosky
Symmetric Instability Of Cross-Stream Varying Currents, Joseph Pedlosky
Journal of Marine Research
The symmetric instability of a simple shear flow in which the velocity is a linear function of the vertical coordinate but which varies slowly in the cross-stream direction is studied using an asymptotic analytical method. Explicit analytical solutions are found for the evolution of the envelope of the developing linear instability. Although the problem with no lateral variation yields cell-like instabilities growing in place, the lateral variation of the shear produces time dependence and cross-stream propagation of the envelope and accompanying cells. A similar solution is derived for the case of laterally uniform shear in a current whose depth slowly …
Available Energy Of The World Ocean, Peter R. Bannon, Raymond G. Najjar
Available Energy Of The World Ocean, Peter R. Bannon, Raymond G. Najjar
Journal of Marine Research
The available energy of the ocean is the excess of the sum of the ocean's internal and gravitational energies with respect to its equilibrium state, which is in thermodynamic equilibrium and has the same total entropy as the ocean. The equilibrium state for the world ocean is rigorously determined to be an isothermal ocean with a temperature of 3.66˚C and a horizontally uniform absolute salinity that increases monotonically from 27.30 g kg–1 at the surface to 47.39 g kg–1 at a depth of 5.5 km. This salinity profile is consistent with a uniform relative chemical potential of 47.44 …

Anatomy Of A Langmuir Supercell Event, A. E. Gargett, D. K. Savidge, J. R. Wells
Journal of Marine Research
Langmuir supercells (LS), which are Langmuir circulations (LC) extending over full water column depth during storms and revealed by high water column backscatter from surface-origin microbubbles and bottom-origin sediment, were discovered in 2003 during several months of measurements in 15 m of water near the coast of New Jersey. Both the structures themselves and the specific forcing conditions under which they occur have been documented elsewhere. This paper provides an account of the broader oceanographic setting of supercell events, focusing on conditions at the start and end. The start of events is associated with the presence of surface waves of …

A Comparison Of Transport And Position Between The Gulf Stream East Of Cape Hatteras And The Florida Current, A. Sanchez-Franks, C. N. Flagg, T. Rossby
Journal of Marine Research
The Florida Current (FC) transport and Gulf Stream (GS) transport and position have been measured almost continuously for many decades in the Florida Straits at ∼27° N and for the last 20 years at ∼38° N along the Oleander line, respectively. Variations in both currents have been linked to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Here we show five different proxies for the position of the GS near the Oleander line and find all five measures internally consistent. Further, using a zonally averaged index, the local measurements prove to be good representatives of overall meridional shifting of the current (between Cape …

Effects Of Injury And Nutrition On Sediment Reworking By Clymenella Torquata (Annelida: Polychaeta), Beth R. Campbell, Sara M. Lindsay
Journal of Marine Research
Marine infaunas influence sediment chemistry, nutrient cycling, and microbial communities as they burrow, feed, defecate, and irrigate their tubes and burrows. Nonlethal tissue loss to predators or other disturbances is frequently observed in macrofaunal communities, and previous research has reported significant effects of onetime injury on animal activity. In this study, we examined the effects of injury and nutrient enrichment on sediment reworking rates of a common deposit-feeding polychaete, Clymenella torquata. Individual worms in cores were monitored in a recirculating seawater system, and their defecation and sediment mixing monitored under several experimental conditions. Worms held in control (unenriched) sediment …

BACKGROUND: The rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is a key species for advancing biomedical research. Like all draft mammalian genomes, the draft rhesus assembly (rheMac2) has gaps, sequencing errors and misassemblies that have prevented automated annotation pipelines from functioning correctly. Another rhesus macaque assembly, CR_1.0, is also available but is substantially more fragmented than rheMac2 with smaller contigs and scaffolds. Annotations for these two assemblies are limited in completeness and accuracy. High quality assembly and annotation files are required for a wide range of studies including expression, genetic and evolutionary analyses.
RESULTS: We report a new de novo assembly of the …

Extending Mendelian Risk Prediction Models To Handle Misreported Family History, Danielle Braun, Malka Gorfine, Hormuzd A. Katki, Argyrios Ziogas, Hoda Anton-Culver, Giovanni Parmigiani
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Mendelian risk prediction models calculate the probability of a proband being a mutation carrier based on family history and known mutation prevalence and penetrance. Family history in this setting, is self-reported and is often reported with error. Various studies in the literature have evaluated misreporting of family history. Using a validation data set which includes both error-prone self-reported family history and error-free validated family history, we propose a method to adjust for misreporting of family history. We estimate the measurement error process in a validation data set (from University of California at Irvine (UCI)) using nonparametric smoothed Kaplan-Meier estimators, and …

Nonparametric Adjustment For Measurement Error In Time To Event Data, Danielle Braun, Malka Gorfine, Hormuzd A. Katki, Argyrios Ziogas, Giovanni Parmigiani
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Measurement error in time to event data used as a predictor will lead to inaccurate predictions. This arises in the context of self-reported family history, a time to event predictor often measured with error, used in Mendelian risk prediction models. Using a validation data set, we propose a method to adjust for this type of measurement error. We estimate the measurement error process using a nonparametric smoothed Kaplan-Meier estimator, and use Monte Carlo integration to implement the adjustment. We apply our method to simulated data in the context of both Mendelian risk prediction models and multivariate survival prediction models, as …
