Understanding the factors that affect dispersal is a fundamental question in ecology and conservation biology, particularly as populations are faced with increasing anthropogenic impacts. Here we collected georeferenced genetic samples (n=2,540) from three generations of black bears (Ursus americanus) harvested in a large (47,739 km2), geographically isolated population and used parentage analysis to identify mother-offspring dyads (n=337). We quantified the effects of sex, age, habitat type and suitability, and local harvest density at the natal and settlement sites on the probability of natal dispersal, and on dispersal distances. Dispersal was male-biased (76% of males dispersed) but …

Quantifying nutrient limitation of primary productivity is a fundamental task of terrestrial ecosystem ecology, but in a high carbon dioxide environment it is even more critical that we understand potential nutrient constraints on plant growth. Ecologists often manipulate nutrients with fertilizer to assess nutrient limitation, yet for a variety of reasons, nutrient fertilization experiments are either impractical or incapable of resolving ecosystem responses to some global changes. The challenges of conducting large, in situ fertilization experiments are magnified in forests, especially the high-diversity forests common throughout the lowland tropics. A number of methods, including fertilization experiments, could be seen as …

As duration of snow cover decreases owing to climate change, species undergoing seasonal colour moults can become colour mismatched with their background. The immediate adaptive solution to this mismatch is phenotypic plasticity, either in phenology of seasonal colour moults or in behaviours that reduce mismatch or its consequences. We observed nearly 200 snowshoe hares across a wide range of snow conditions and two study sites in Montana, USA, and found minimal plasticity in response to mismatch between coat colour and background. We found that moult phenology varied between study sites, likely due to differences in photoperiod and climate, but was …

This study investigated pretreatment of corn stover using solid substrate cultivation (SSC) of Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium) to improve subsequent accessibility to cellulose. Thereafter, Clostridium thermocellum (C. thermocellum) was directly inoculated onto the pretreated biomass to accomplish hydrolysis, followed by solventogenesis by introducing Clostridium beijerinckii (C. beijerinckii).
An enzyme suite containing laccase, lignin peroxidase and manganese peroxidase activity was detected during the cultivation of P. chrysosporium on corn stover within 288 h at an initial moisture content 𝓌H2O = 80% (mass of water/total mass). Incubation factors, such as substrate moisture content and cultivation …

Shelter-Building Behavior And Natural History Of Two Pyralid Caterpillars Feeding On Piper Stipulaceum, Mariana Abarca, Karina Boege, Alejandro Zaldívar-Riverón
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Shelter-building behavior by caterpillars provides a mechanism of defense against predators, microenvironment enhancement, and in some cases nutritional benefits. This study provides a detailed description of the life cycle and shelter-building process of caterpillars, and identifies constraints and factors influencing this adaptive behavior in Lepidomys n. sp. near proclea Druce (Pyralidae: Chrysauginae), a tropical dry forest pyralid. Five macroscopic larval instars were detected during the life cycle, and activities performed during shelter-building were categorized and timed. Caterpillar predators were identified, and 20% of all collected larvae died due to attack by parasitoid wasps. Shelter-building behavior was found to be constrained …

A college education is essential to the future. Those with a college degree will make a higher income and be affected less by economic instability. Employment requiring a college degree will grow, while jobs that do not require postsecondary education will decline. Yet barriers exist that keep all students from attaining a college education. It is the charge of schools to prepare students so they not only enter college, but also have the necessary skills to be successful in college-level courses. Federal initiatives mandate periodic assessments to ensure student learning and to hold schools accountable. However, scores from these assessments …

Chiral macrocycles featuring sulfonamide and/or amide groups as anion-binding sites were synthesized. X-ray crystal structures and DFT calculations have shown that they adopt different conformations that may lead to unique binding behavior. Indeed, various anions could be sensed by their colorimetric and/or fluorescence signal output. The chiral macrocycles showed chiral recognition for chiral anions. Furthermore, a multisensor array with two or four chiral receptors discriminated seven phosphate anions (AMP, ADP, ATP, CMP, GMP, Pi, and PPi) with 100% classification accuracy.

Background: The revision process for and recent publication of the DSM-5 initiated debates about the widening of diagnostic boundaries. The pharmaceutical industry had a major financial stake in the outcome of these debates. This study examines the three-part relationship among DSM panel members, principal investigators (PIs) of clinical trials for new DSM-5 diagnoses, and drug companies.
Methods: Financial conflicts of interest (FCOI) of DSM panel members responsible for some new diagnoses in the DSM-5 and PIs of clinical trials for related drug treatments were identified. Trials were found by searching ClinicalTrials.gov. Patent and revenue information about these drugs was found …
The Mechanistic Approach Of 'The Theory Of Island Biogeography' And Its Current Relevance, Viorel Pâslaru
The Mechanistic Approach Of 'The Theory Of Island Biogeography' And Its Current Relevance, Viorel Pâslaru
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Philosophers of science have examined The Theory of Island Biogeography by Robert MacArthur and E. O. Wilson (1967) mainly due to its important contribution to modeling in ecology, but they have not examined it as a representative case of ecological explanation. In this paper, I scrutinize the type of explanation used in this paradigmatic work of ecology. I describe the philosophy of science of MacArthur and Wilson and show that it is mechanistic. Based on this account and in light of contributions to the mechanistic conception of explanation due to Craver (2007), and Bechtel and Richardson (1993), I argue that …

Agricultural Biotechnology-An Opportunity To Feed A World Of Ten Billion, Nina V. Fedoroff, Drew L. Kershen
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
The latest United Nations population projections predict that the human population will expand from roughly 7.5 billion to between 8.3 and 10.9 billion by mid-century. This presents an acute need to increase agricultural productivity quickly and to do so without unduly damaging the many other kinds of organisms that share our planet. The advances of genetic engineering and genetic modification hold the promise of making it possible for us to grow more food on the same amount of land using less water, energy, and chemicals: critically important objectives if we are to live sustainably within planetary constraints. At the same …

One-Door-One-Key Principle: Observations Regarding Integration Of Gm Authorization Procedures In The Eu, Bernd Van Der Meulen, Neshe Yusuf
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
Under European Union (EU) law, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for consumption require authorizations for cultivation, for use in human food, and for use in animal feed. The recast of the legislative framework in 2003 introduced the "one-door-one-key principle." This principle links and integrates the procedures to acquire these three authorizations partly in a mandatory and partly in an optional manner. Even though the EU legislature perceives the three authorizations as intrinsically linked, in practice considerable differences can be observed in the presence of GMOs on the EU market for cultivation, for feed use, and for food use. Partly these differences …
Genetic Modification And Food Irradiation: Are Those Strictly On A Need-To-Know Basis?, Lars Noah
Genetic Modification And Food Irradiation: Are Those Strictly On A Need-To-Know Basis?, Lars Noah
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
Under the longstanding FDA policy, the use of genetic engineering in the production of food products generally does not require disclosure in labeling, though sellers would have to reveal if the process introduced any special risks or other material changes. Commentators who criticize this policy often point to the agency's purportedly contrary "precedent" in requiring disclosure whenever foods undergo irradiation. That old FDA rule deserves much of the blame, however, for the fact that irradiation remains seriously underutilized as an effective tool for guarding against foodborne pathogens. If routine GMO food labeling ever became mandatory under either federal or state …

The Development Of A Non-Profit Organization, Keep In Touch, As A Solution To The Problem Of Visitation, Shalom Z. Lapoint, Shalom Z. Lapoint
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
This project discusses the development of Keep in Touch. Keep in Touch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which is designed to aid the visitation process. Visitation is concerned with children and their families who have been separated. Reasons for separation vary; however, many children have been separated and would benefit greatly from a local visitation program. Items such as children’s rights, California’s mandatory mediation law, and the current conditions of the family court house in San Bernardino County are all discussed and examined as supporting evidence to the problem of family visitation. The goal of Keep in Touch is …

A Phenomenological Study Of Inclusive Environments From The Perspective Of Rural Middle School General Education Teachers Of Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, James Barr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study explored the shared experience of rural middle school general education teachers of students diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) in inclusive classrooms. The study began by examining related issues associated with inclusive environments. Data analysis was structured around phenomenological organizational methods: that there exists within the phenomenon a descriptive experience, and within that experience there are voids of possible explanation and interpretation. The research incorporated observations, interviews, and documents as forms of data collection. This inquiry sought to uncover the ways in which general education teachers who serve students diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disabilities find …

One of the primary tick vectors of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), Dermacentor variabilis (Say), is found throughout much of North America, including Mississippi, where numerous cases are reported annually. Although RMSF has long been documented in the US, it may be confused with other zoonoses, which sometimes delays treatment. Therefore, detailed documentation of the distribution and infection rates of this tick is important to public health officials. In this study, two sites in northern Mississippi, the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge and Wall Doxey State Park, were surveyed weekly by drag cloth for a one year period …
