Open Access And The Public Library Of Medicine, Summary Of A Presentation By Dr. Harold Varmus, Michael J. Miller May 2014

Open Access And The Public Library Of Medicine, Summary Of A Presentation By Dr. Harold Varmus, Michael J. Miller

Urban Library Journal

Dr. Varmus opened his comments with a vignette regarding his own foray into the publishing world. Based upon his exposure to Cornell's arXiv.org, (the evolutionary result of Ginsbarg's "e-print archives" for electronic research publications for physics materials), he eventually pursued similar means of electronic research publishing in the areas of biology and medicine. Though challenged by the academy, these efforts guided by accompanying constructive criticisms led to the development of PubMed Central(tm). ...

Constructions Of Black Identity In The Work Of Glenn Ligon And Kara Walker, Shadé R. Ayorinde May 2014

Constructions Of Black Identity In The Work Of Glenn Ligon And Kara Walker, Shadé R. Ayorinde

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

In this thesis I reference artworks and installations by Glenn Ligon and Kara Walker, as well as contemporary mass media images, to offer a reading of various constructions of black identity in the 1990s and into the 21st century. I specifically note the continuation of social biases against black bodies, which in large part stems from historical conditions of 19th century America and the lingering legacy of slavery. I also address how the absence or implied absence of the black male body, as referenced in works by both Ligon and Walker, relates to contemporary social conditions in which …

Investigate to see if these plans could possibly be used in Lincoln, NE in places like Pioneers Park. The bullfrog has outcompeted many native species when it invades an ecosystem. It is considered one of the worst invaders in the world. Once established it is very hard to eradicate. So it is important to understand and investigate control being used currently. Literature review was used …

Soil Health After Intense Ponderosa Pine Forest Fire In North Central Nebraska, Amanda Hefner May 2014

Soil Health After Intense Ponderosa Pine Forest Fire In North Central Nebraska, Amanda Hefner

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

In late July 2012, the Region 24 Complex fire consumed over 76, 000 acres of north central Nebraska. This area consists of ponderosa pine forest with high densities of eastern redcedar, deciduous hardwood forest, and Sandhills prairie. This incredible event provided an occasion to examine the effect of the fire on soil nitrification and soil erosion at The Nature Conservancy’s Niobrara Valley Preserve. Eighteen 900m2 plots were established in regions chosen for their topographic location (footslope, midslope, and ridgetop), forest density, and directional slope (north vs. south facing slope). Each plot was split into nine subplots with 25 erosion …

The Impact Of Faculty Perception Of Student Affairs Personnel On Collaborative Initiatives: A Case Study, Matthew Peltier May 2014

The Impact Of Faculty Perception Of Student Affairs Personnel On Collaborative Initiatives: A Case Study, Matthew Peltier

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sandeen (1991) and, later, Winston, Creamer, Miller, and Associates (2001) describe the primary role of student affairs personnel as being educators. They further identify collaboration between student affairs and the faculty to be a key way in which this educational role is to be accomplished. However, there exists bifurcated understanding of student development, with faculty being responsible for intellectual development and student affairs professionals being responsible for psychosocial development.

Much attention has been given to the relationship between academic and student affairs, the role of each, and the potential that collaboration between the two offers in the achievement of developmental …

Making Their Own Way: The Experiences Of Gay Male Students In Stem Fields, Adam R. Smith May 2014

Making Their Own Way: The Experiences Of Gay Male Students In Stem Fields, Adam R. Smith

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis focuses on the experiences of gay male undergraduate students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. These fields are often thought to be very masculine or hyper-genderized, which could conflict with the dominant culture’s perception of a gay student’s identity. It follows, then, that a hypergenderized environment could have negative effects on those who do not identify strongly with the hegemonic masculine identity that may be present in the classroom.

Using phenomenological principles, students were asked to participate in a series of three interviews, which included two reflective exercises designed to explore their experiences in and …

Predicting Survival Time Of Localized Melanoma Patients Using Discrete Survival Time Method, Taysseer Sharaf, Chris P. Tsokos

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Melanoma is the most fatal type of skin cancer. It is ranked first in death of skin cancer diseases. This study establishes a statistical model that can predict the survival time of localized melanoma patients, as a function of age at diagnosis, tumor thickness, and extension of the tumor (tumor invasion). The discrete time survival method was used to build the statistical model. The patients involved in the current study were observed from the SEER database. Patients were divided into nine groups according to age at diagnosis. Variation in survival time was found to be significant among some of the …

An Exploratory Graphical Method For Identifying Associations In R X C Contingency Tables, Martin L. Lesser, Meredith B. Akerman

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

On finding a significant association between rows and columns of an r x c contingency table, the next step is to study the nature of the association in more detail. The use of a scree plot to visualize the largest contributions to Χ2 among all cells in the table in order to determine the nature of the association in more detail is proposed.

2041: A Communal Life, Nathaniel Thomas Danciger May 2014

2041: A Communal Life, Nathaniel Thomas Danciger

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

I posit that an architecture of collective cultural spaces, shared human and animal habitat, and affordable local building techniques, implemented through the design of a co-housing community, would promote a collaborative and communal way of life in harmony with the natural landscape and offer a model for the future development of former agricultural and suburban sites in a manner preferable to the current practices of the American suburb. This project is concerned with redefining the way that people in the United States will occupy rural landscapes in the future. The site for this new co-housing model is a field outside …

Musicianmaker An App For Teaching Musicality To Beginners, Jamie Yavorsky May 2014

Musicianmaker An App For Teaching Musicality To Beginners, Jamie Yavorsky

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The purpose of this paper is to support and defend my senior capstone project, which takes the form of an educational app for iPad called MusicianMaker. The paper is split into two main sections: a rationale for the necessity of the app, and a justification for the educational benefits it provides. Over the course of my undergraduate career I have studied available resources for music education and found a disappointing majority that make no attempt to teach musicality. Teachers and scholars debate that music learning is either absolute or relativistic, but regardless of their opinion I have found no pedagogy …

The Role Of Late Embryogenesis-Abundant Proteins In Desiccation-Induced Apoptosis, Benjamin S. Poznic

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Encysted embryos of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana survive extreme water loss by expressing the late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) protein AfLEA1.3 and the moss Physcomitrella patens expresses PpDHNA under conditions of dehydration. I investigated the impact of transgenic expression of PpDHNA and AfLEA1.3 on the metabolism of mammalian cells exposed to 0.5 M sucrose. The gene PpDHNA was transgenically expressed in human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells and AfLEA1.3 was cloned into human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells. Calorimetry was utilized to measure the metabolic activity of both cell lines. HEK cells showed a metabolic output of -24.1 ± 2.04 (SD) μW …

Mitoneet: Reduction In Insulin Resistance Through Ameliorated Oxidative Stress?, Nicolas A. Ferry May 2014

Mitoneet: Reduction In Insulin Resistance Through Ameliorated Oxidative Stress?, Nicolas A. Ferry

Undergraduate Honors Theses

MitoNEET is a mitochondrial iron-sulfur protein with poorly-understood functions. Proposed functions of mitoNEET include regulating of oxidative capacity, reactive oxygen homeostasis, and other possible roles. Investigating the interactions of mitoNEET with other proteins might help identify functional roles of this protein. MitoNEET was discovered in 2004 to identify physiological targets of pioglitazone hydrochloride, a drug that is commonly used to treat type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is a metabolic disease and, although the exact pathology is complex, the role of the mitochondrion in cellular energy production and glucose oxidation indicates that this organelle has a role in type-2 diabetes. Because of …

Nightmares, Anxiety, And Kindergarten-Aged Children, Megan A. Dandurand May 2014

Nightmares, Anxiety, And Kindergarten-Aged Children, Megan A. Dandurand

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The current study investigated the relationship between nightmares and anxiety traits in young children. Nightmare experience was measured through parent and child reports of nightmare occurrence, frequency, and distress. A sample of 37 parent-child pairs completed a demographic questionnaire, parent and child reported nightmare questionnaire, and a parent-reported anxiety scale. Results indicated that children reported significantly more nightmares than their parents, however there was no difference between parent versus child reported nightmare distress . Results indicated that parents who rated their children to have higher anxiety also reported their children to have more frequent nightmares. A similar trend, that was …

Plant-Microbial Interactions Change Along A Prairie Restoration Chronosequence, Anna Herzberger May 2014

Plant-Microbial Interactions Change Along A Prairie Restoration Chronosequence, Anna Herzberger

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Soil microbial communities are critical in determining the performance and density of species in plant communities. However, their role in regulating the success of restorations is much less clear. This study assessed the ability of soil microbial communities to regulate the growth and performance of two potentially dominant grasses and two common forbs in prairie restorations. Specifically, I examined the effects of soil microbial communities along a restoration chronosequence from agricultural fields to remnant prairies using experimentally inoculated soils. The two grass species, Andropogon gerardii and Sorghastrum nutans, produced larger biomass with the agricultural inoculates and experienced a decline …

Parasite burdens in lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Chen rossii) migrating through central Illinois were determined and compared to documented parasite burdens on the breeding grounds in northern Canada and the wintering grounds in southern Texas. The digestive tracts of 48 snow geese (38 lesser snow geese and 10 Ross’s geese) were collected from 4 February to 3 March, 2012, in Raymond, Illinois. Eight helminth taxa (two species of Trematoda, four species of Nematoda, and two species of Cestoda) were recovered. Five of the eight helminth taxa were common in both species …

Lifecycle Efficiency Of Mice Divergently Selected For Heat Loss, Adrienne Bhatnagar May 2014

Lifecycle Efficiency Of Mice Divergently Selected For Heat Loss, Adrienne Bhatnagar

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Divergent selection for heat loss as an indication of maintenance energy requirements in mice resulted in a low (ML) and high maintenance line (MH), and an intermediate control line (MC). Improved feed efficiency has been observed in ML mice, which would be economically beneficial in livestock species. However, previous work showed evidence of unfavorable correlated responses to selection in ML mice compared to MH mice. Therefore, the objective of this study was to model a lifecycle similar to a livestock production system using these lines and determine if these correlated responses diminish the benefit of improved feed efficiency by calculating …

The Effects Of Feed Additives, Housing Systems, And Stress On Salmonella Shedding In Single Comb White And Brown Laying Hens, Dana L. Hahn

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A series of studies were conducted examining feed additives, housing systems and stress on Salmonella shedding. Alternative feed additives such as prebiotics, probiotics and essential oils have been shown to reduce pathogenic bacteria colonization. Furthermore, stressors such as movement have been shown to increase Salmonella shedding. The goal of the studies was to examine if alternative ingredients reduce Salmonella shedding in alternative housing systems and through movement stress. Study 1 examined cage and cage-free housing with mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) supplementation. Treatments were arranged in a 2x2 factorial design: cage or cage free; MOS (0% or 0.08%). There was no effect …

Motivation And Learning: Toward An Intrinsic Approach, Wÿnanda Armas May 2014

Motivation And Learning: Toward An Intrinsic Approach, Wÿnanda Armas

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Having always been fascinated by students’ attitudes towards learning, for my Honors Capstone and for my Industrial and Interaction Design Thesis, I took the opportunity to research motivation in education. Everyone is born intrinsically motivated but this can be conditioned out of us by extrinsic motivation. Despite the known benefits of intrinsic motivation and perils of extras at motivation, extrinsic motivation is continually used, devaluing intrinsic motivation in all kinds of settings, including our schools. While intrinsic motivation cannot be taught, it can be fostered by removing the obstacles that prevent someone from motivating him or herself.

Reading is the …

Radiopharmaceuticals: The Application Of Technetium-99m And Rhenium Complexes, Angela Kristin Binion May 2014

Radiopharmaceuticals: The Application Of Technetium-99m And Rhenium Complexes, Angela Kristin Binion

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Nuclear imaging used in diagnostic medicine requires the use of radiopharmaceuticals to make biological areas visible under a gamma camera. Although much success has been found in the use of technetium based imaging agents, their corresponding rhenium complexes can provide insight into the chemical properties of these radiopharmaceuticals without the potentially damaging effects of radiation. Technetium and rhenium complexes utilize a bifunctional chelator to act as a linker between biological vectors and the metal, improving the coordination between the two. Ligands containing thiazole rings have been successfully coordinated to technetium or rhenium tricarbonyl complexes, although it is uncertain whether coordination …

Cell Kinase Inhibitor Panel Reveals Multiple Targets To Prevent Replication Of Varicella-Zoster Virus, Bryan Egan Bunnell May 2014

Cell Kinase Inhibitor Panel Reveals Multiple Targets To Prevent Replication Of Varicella-Zoster Virus, Bryan Egan Bunnell

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The alphaherpesvirus that causes chicken pox and shingles, varicella-zoster virus (VZV), infects skin fibroblasts and keratinocytes. These cells are typically quiescent and it is known that VZV manipulates their intracellular environment to activate MAPK signaling cascades, cell cycle regulators, and many transcription factors for its replication. We hypothesized that inhibition of cell kinases would prevent VZV replication and also elucidate which pathways are most important. We evaluated 80 kinase inhibitors for cytotoxicity and anti-proliferative effects on human foreskin fibroblasts, and then determined their antiviral efficacy against VZV-ORF9-Luc strain. Ten well-tolerated, potent kinase inhibitors whose targets are critical mediators of VZV …

Representing Rurality, Carolina Esther Jimenez May 2014

Representing Rurality, Carolina Esther Jimenez

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Architecture is a system of representation. Architecture’s power is that through representation we may change previously constructed conceptions and misperceptions, and ultimately it can transform patterns of spatial inhabitation. Through words, images, drawings, and built work, we define modes of experiencing space. This project seeks to redefine Nebraska as a territory of critical social, political, economic, and physical importance through architectural representations.

Investigating The Shelf Life Of Benzoyl Peroxide Coated Nozzles For Bone Cement Application, Alysen Leigh Demzik May 2014

Investigating The Shelf Life Of Benzoyl Peroxide Coated Nozzles For Bone Cement Application, Alysen Leigh Demzik

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Two-solution bone cements (TSBC) were developed to address the limitations of current powder-liquid bone cements, however are characterized by a limited shelf life due to spontaneous free radical polymerization. As a solution to pre-polymerization concerns, the initiator benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was removed from the cement solution and incorporated into a thin film coating within the static mixing nozzle, allowing the BPO to integrate with the TSBC as it is mixed for use. Only short-term storage of BPO-coated nozzles and the subsequent effects on bone cement properties is known. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of time, …

Attenuating The Attentional Blink And Its Consequences: Support For The Wyble-Bowman-Nieuwenstien Model, Samantha Riane Debes May 2014

Attenuating The Attentional Blink And Its Consequences: Support For The Wyble-Bowman-Nieuwenstien Model, Samantha Riane Debes

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

When participants are asked to detect two targets (T1 and T2) in a stream of rapidly presented visual stimuli, T2 accuracy decreases when it follows T1 by 200 ms to 500 ms, a phenomenon known as the attentional blink (AB). Researchers have been attempting to attenuate the AB through experimental manipulations in order to understand temporal processing in the visual domain. Studies that have successfully attenuated the blink have often (but not always) done so using a concurrent task. One current model of visual temporal attention, the Wyble-Bowman-Nieuwenstien model (2009) suggests that a byproduct of the attenuation of the attentional …

Bidirectional Influence Of Epinephrine On Hippocampal Ltp Via Β-Adrenergic Receptors, Georgia Christine Buscaglia May 2014

Bidirectional Influence Of Epinephrine On Hippocampal Ltp Via Β-Adrenergic Receptors, Georgia Christine Buscaglia

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The formation and storage of memories within the brain remains a subject that is not well understood. The hippocampus has been identified by many studies as a likely center for memory formation (Lynch, 2004), and further research into this subject has begun to suggest that synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus could be partly responsible for the physical changes in the brain, which underlie memory formation. Long Term Potentiation is a form of synaptic plasticity, and is considered to be a physical increase in the strength of connection between neurons or groups of neurons. Much like memories, the duration of a …
