Controlling Juvenile Behavior: An Empirical Test Of Hirschi's Attachment And Involvement, Samantha M. Lower
Controlling Juvenile Behavior: An Empirical Test Of Hirschi's Attachment And Involvement, Samantha M. Lower
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The current study is focused on the influence of Hirschi’s Social Control Theory on juvenile delinquency. Specifically, I examined if attachment and involvement reduced delinquency among youth using a secondary data analysis of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The results indicated that attachment to parental and/or non-parental adults does significantly affect delinquency, but voluntary involvement in conventional activities does not.

The Whore Paradox : "Rational" Condom Use Decisions Among Prostitutes In The Context Of Stigma And Patriarchal Bargaining., Maggie Mccandless Stone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High-risk sexual activity involved in prostitution is a criminal justice and public health issue heightened by the potential transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as a result of engaging in certain unprotected sex acts. This constitutes a significant health problem suitable for discourse on social policy. The work adds to the extant prostitution literature by providing an in-depth qualitative examination of female prostitutes resulting in the proposal of a new theoretical framework, the whore paradox. The theory provides explanatory insight into the sexual health decisions of prostitutes and has potential applications to other deviant and risk-taking populations. Policy implications include …

The Tempest Defending Prospera : The Ideation Of Spiritual Lineage And Practice In Performance For An Afro-Haitian American Actor., Iva-Kristi Maria Papailler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Imagine: William Shakespeare’s final hero, Prospero and all of his beautiful and majestic White, Italian maleness played by an Afro-Haitian American actress. Something changes. No longer does the audience see a traditional view of the character onstage. The audience sees a woman of African descent delivering lines written for a man of European descent. They may or may not question what they are seeing: certainly, I the actor, must. My Blackness brings an ancestral line to the production that makes a variety of traditional African religions part of Prospera’s spiritual lineage. My Blackness and gender also imbue Prospera with a …

Housing First, Neighborhood Second? : The Role Of Housing And Neighborhood Characteristics On Residential Stability In Two Housing First Projects., Carey D. Addison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the impacts of neighborhood and housing type on housing stability for formerly homeless individuals participating in Housing First projects in Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Both projects operate similarly except that the Louisville project has only scattered-site housing while the Cincinnati project has both project-based and scattered-site housing. The first chapter presents five key research questions that frame the study. Chapter 2 reviews literature on homelessness and policies to address this urban problem with a specific emphasis on Housing First. Chapter 3 proposes qualitative and quantitative methods for answering the proposed research questions. Chapter 4 summarizes findings …

Bipartisanship can be dangerous. In the late 1970s, liberal and conservative forces united to discard two centuries of federal sentencing practice and usher in an era of fixed guidelines that would reshape the criminal justice landscape. In the decades that followed, liberals would come to bitterly regret their alliance with conservative sentencing reformers. The guideline regime established by the Sentencing Reform Act ultimately advanced hardline conservative criminal justice goals that were antithetical to the objectives of many of the Act’s former liberal supporters.
Researchers have shown that a particular cognitive bias — cultural cognition — can explain why intense partisan …

The Laws Of War And Public Opinion: An Experimental Study, Adam S. Chilton
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Research examining whether the laws of war change state behavior has produced conflicting results, and limitations of observational studies have stalled progress on the topic. I have conducted a survey experiment to bring new evidence to the debate. I directly test whether a mechanism hypothesized to drive compliance with international law—public opinion—creates pressure to comply with the laws of war. The results provide qualified support to research suggesting that democracies may comply with the laws of war when there is the expectation of reciprocity, and demonstrate the potential of using experimental methods to study the laws of war.

Gender Differences And Impact On Addictions Treatment: Special Consideration For Working With Female Clients, Amy Horihan
Counselor Education Capstones
Special considerations when working with women with substance use disorders were assessed in comparison to male counterparts. Topics included gender differences relating to physiological, psychological and socio-cultural spheres. Treatment considerations related to trauma sensitivity, marginalization and stigma were addressed. Special considerations relating to female racial minority populations were evaluated and explored. Research included a comprehensive literature review of peer-reviewed journal articles, research studies and government report findings covering multiple disciplines: counseling, neuropsychology, medical, criminal justice and social work. Findings of this research revealed significant diversity and complexity within the American population of females struggling with chemical addiction. Due to this …
Prison Health Care After The Affordable Care Act: Envisioning An End To The Policy Of Neglect, Evelyn Malave
Prison Health Care After The Affordable Care Act: Envisioning An End To The Policy Of Neglect, Evelyn Malave
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Inadequate prison health care has created a health crisis for reentering prisoners and their communities--a crisis that is exacerbated by barriers to employment and other collateral consequences of release. This Note will first examine how current Eighth Amendment doctrine has failed to sufficiently regulate prison health care so as to have any significant effect on the crisis. Next, it will argue that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) alters the Eighth Amendment analysis by triggering a change in the "evolving standards of decency" that guide the doctrine. Specifically, this Note will argue that, after the passage of the ACA, releasing sick, …

Deterring Fraud: Police Investigations Into Embezzlement, Brandon Grossman
Honors College Theses
Embezzlement is a highly disruptive crime that comes with a large negative societal impact. This study was a secondary data analysis of embezzlement data from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for the years 2012-2013. Clearance rates were calculated and analyzed for general fraud related calls for service and for embezzlement cases specifically in order to determine what clearance rates were for the Las Vegas Valley and see if they are comparable to the national average. Data was analyzed within pie and bar charts to determine if the LVMPD is effectively solving embezzlement cases and see if cases with particular …

Robust System For Infection Control: An Industrial Systems Engineering Approach, Sundaravel Vinay Swarup Achudhan
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Health care delivery in the United States needs improvement. Each year about 98,000 people die as a result of medical errors and the United States is outranked by a number of developed countries in life expectancy, mortality and comorbidity. Healthcare quality is determined based on the quality of the service provided to the patient during their visit. Apart from the traditional problem solving design and development tools used to improve healthcare quality, The National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine recommend systems engineering principle and systems engineering tools to be used in health care to improve the industry. …

Journalism Program
For a journalist, there are only a few things that can land you a job. One of those things is having a professional portfolio. That’s why the Journalism Department has its students complete a professional portfolio as part of their Honors program. The Honors Program takes work students have already completed, then asks them to revise it, or even do it again. That way, when we leave the program, we’re ready to start sending out portfolios and resumés to potential employers. My portfolio is dominated by work that I wrote for a print medium because that’s what our program focuses …
Neuro-Voir Dire And The Architecture Of Bias, Dov Fox
Neuro-Voir Dire And The Architecture Of Bias, Dov Fox
UC Law Journal
Courts and commentators routinely assume that “bias” on the jury encompasses any source of influence upon jurors that does not come directly from the evidence presented at trial. This sweeping conception of juror bias is flawed because it fails to distinguish the prejudices and affinities that infect jury decisionmaking from the experiences and perspectives that enrich it. This Article uses a thought experiment informed by the neuroscience of bias to illuminate the complexity of juror influences that go by the name of bias. I distinguish four distinct categories of juror influence: personal interests, community interests, case-specific beliefs, and case-general beliefs. …

The Quest For Justice In Cambodia: Power, Politics, And The Khmer Rouge Tribunal, Donald W. Beachler
The Quest For Justice In Cambodia: Power, Politics, And The Khmer Rouge Tribunal, Donald W. Beachler
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The trial of the four surviving senior members of the Khmer Rouge leadership was a difficult undertaking from the start. The elderly defendants were in frail health. Illness and death reduced the number of the accused to just two. The Cambodian government, led by Hun Sen, was not eager to have any trials at all, and was determined that the trial not implicate officials who were now allied with the ruling regime. The conflicting agendas of the international judges on the hybrid court and the Cambodian government often left the court mired in disputes. The Cambodian genocide tribunal illustrates the …
