Countering Radicalization And Recruitment To Al-Qaeda: Fighting The War Of Deeds, Paul Kamolnick
Countering Radicalization And Recruitment To Al-Qaeda: Fighting The War Of Deeds, Paul Kamolnick
ETSU Authors Bookshelf
This Letort Paper proposes that actions, policies, and deeds—those of the U.S. Government and al-Qaeda—be leveraged as a means of delegitimizing al-Qaeda terrorist propaganda. Two chief fronts—changing deeds and challenging deeds—is proposed. Changing deeds requires that the United States carefully and systematically examine its own foreign and military policies and their specific consequences for the Arab and Muslim world. Challenging deeds comprises systematically countering with evidence and fact al-Qaeda’s two greatest propagandistic fabrications: that the United States is a crusader at war with Islam, and that al-Qaeda is the vanguard defender of a besieged and oppressed Muslim Umma. Provocative at …

From Crime To Punishment: Moral Violations And The Social Function Of Emotion, Michael Ray Brubacher
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Punishments that are issued by the criminal justice system can enhance factors related to recidivism or contribute to offender rehabilitation. Investigating the ecological element of public attitudes toward punishment can inform efforts of second-order change for reducing recidivism and improving offender and community wellbeing (Bronfenbrenner, 1979; Kelly, 1966; Watzlawick, Weakland, & Fisch, 1974).
The form and duration of punishments can be influenced by the goals that punishments are meant to achieve. Punishment goals include retribution, incapacitation, individual deterrence, general deterrence, rehabilitation, and restorative justice. Each of the goals can lead to sanctions that impact offender behavior differently yet substantive predictors …
Federalism, Diversity, Equality, And Article Iii Judges: Geography, Identity, And Bias, Sharon E. Rush
Federalism, Diversity, Equality, And Article Iii Judges: Geography, Identity, And Bias, Sharon E. Rush
UF Law Faculty Publications
Each individual has a background, and that background shapes the individual’s views about life, creating an inevitable form of bias referred to as “experiential bias.” Experiential bias is shaped by many identity traits, including, among others, race, sex, sexual orientation, religion and even geography. The geographic identity of state judges and their potential unfair experiential bias is the common justification for federal court diversity jurisdiction. But experiential bias is inescapable, affecting everyone who's ever had an experience, and is generally not unfair, as demonstrated by most studies regarding the "fairness" justification for diversity jurisdiction. More recently, Justice O’Connor connected racial …

Leveraging A Cross-Functional Team For Critical Professional Development: The Work After The Leading For Change 2013 Conference, Darcy Orellana, Paula Pitcher, Phil Sisson, Peter Shea
Leading for Change
There’s no single way for a campus to “act” after sending a team to the Leading for Change: Diversity Practices in Higher Education 2013 conference. At Middlesex Community College we leveraged the expertise and perspectives of our cross-functional and cognitively diverse team to establish a Closing the Achievement Gap working group to promote organizational learning about the topic. Learn how this collaborative group is telling the MCC data story and providing opportunities for the entire campus to learn, discuss and share knowledge about promoting success through inclusive practices at a college-wide professional day dedicated to closing the achievement gap.

Leading for Change
Middlesex Community College has targeted the achievement gap as a key initiative. Our strategic plan calls for “focusing on research, pedagogies, and initiatives that assist in identifying and closing achievement gaps for diverse student populations and effectively support student success for all.” Join the three academic deans from MCC as they discuss a variety of initiatives from across the college designed to impact the achievement gap on their campus. The discussion will include the use of Achievement Coaches, Pathways Centers, Institutional Research, Grant Funding and campus wide professional development.

Purpose
–The purpose of this paper if to design a workshop that effectively facilitates the collaborative revision of student learning outcomes based on current research relating to competencies in information literacy (IL).
Design/methodology/approach
– This case study describes collaborations between librarians and writing instructors throughout an eight-week workshop. The workshop focused on using the results of assessments to revise learning outcomes and restructure instruction practices to help students in the areas they struggle with the most. Three significant frameworks, including threshold concepts, backward design and decoding the disciplines, were used to facilitate effective discussion and revise learning outcomes.

Integrating Restorative Justice Approaches In An Art Therapy Group, Jenna Walters
Integrating Restorative Justice Approaches In An Art Therapy Group, Jenna Walters
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to explore the integration of restorative justice approaches within the structure of group art therapy. The research approach was based on a mixed methods design that incorporated both a survey and a case study of a group. The open group structure posed some challenges; however, four of the adolescents agreed to participate in the research study. Each of the eight group art therapy sessions was structured to include an art directive, psychoeducation, and group discussion. Based on the analysis of the data, restorative justice approaches can be successfully integrated into group art therapy. Findings …
Art Therapy And Runaway Homeless Youth: An Exploration Of Trauma And The Survival Response Of "Flight", Leann K. Marschall
Art Therapy And Runaway Homeless Youth: An Exploration Of Trauma And The Survival Response Of "Flight", Leann K. Marschall
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study examined the influencing factors of runaway behavior, trauma, and the survival response of “flight.” The participant, an 18-year-old male residing at a transitional living program, ran away at age 17 and experienced a significant trauma history. Throughout the course of treatment, artwork and clinical notes were used as data. Many themes surfaced in the analysis process, including controlled chaos, body fragmentation, sun symbols, female imagery, and lack of color. The act of running away emerged subtly, whereas, traumatic experiences, chronic in nature and beginning early in life, were acutely evident. While the study was specifically concerned …

Compensating Victims Of Crime, Douglas N. Evans
Compensating Victims Of Crime, Douglas N. Evans
Publications and Research
Victims of violent crime are often unable to access financial compensation to offset the costs of victimization (e.g., medical, lost wages, funeral expenses) despite the massive amounts of money set aside for just that purpose. Currently, there is about $11 billion in the federal Crime Victims Fund (CVF). Less than 10 percent of this amount is allocated to state victim compensation programs. This report explores the funding mechanisms used by federal and state governments to compensate victims of crime, and it describes the administrative and policy problems in these systems. The report offers several recommendations for improvement. States have their …

Participation, Information, Values, And Community Interests Within Health Impact Assessments, Nicole Iroz-Elardo
Participation, Information, Values, And Community Interests Within Health Impact Assessments, Nicole Iroz-Elardo
Dissertations and Theses
Health impact assessment (HIA) has emerged in the U.S. as one promising process to increase social and environmental justice through addressing health equity issues within planning. HIA practice is guided by values such as democracy and equity and grounded in broad social determinants of health. The most readily applied definition of democracy is problematic because it implies an element of direct, participatory engagement with the public. This is at odds with HIA practice that largely relies on stakeholder engagement strategies.
This dissertation critically examines the engagement strategies of three transportation planning HIA cases to more fully understand how the HIA …
