Peer Bullying Of Academically Oriented Students: Gender, Race, Ethnicity, And School Context, Brett Lehman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation reports on several quantitative analyses of bullying victimization among U.S. high school students. The methods employed are secondary analysis of survey data originally collected by the National Center of Education Statistics through the Educational Longitudinal Study. The data analyzed are a nationally representative sample of U.S. high school sophomores from the year 2002. This report contains six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces public and scholarly interests on bullying victimization with a specific focus on approaching bullying from a sociological viewpoint. Chapter 2 reviews scholarly research that motivates each analysis in the report. Chapter 3 presents an analysis which is …
Commercial Mythmaking And The Gaelic Athletic Association: Exploring Irish Men’S Identity Work Within Influential Social Networks, Deirdre Duffy
Commercial Mythmaking And The Gaelic Athletic Association: Exploring Irish Men’S Identity Work Within Influential Social Networks, Deirdre Duffy
Conference papers
This paper explores young men’s engagement with Irish sporting and cultural organisation, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), to show how the interrelations and influences of one’s social network or human interdependencies all serve as potential cues on which individuals learn to construct their identity projects. This research engages Foucauldian theory to consider the effects of power emanating from multiple sources (to include the influence of peers, family, community, mass media and social institutions) on the individual. By looking at the intricacies of mundane everyday practices, such as the participation in sport, allows a better understanding of how individuals actually come …

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to investigate the potential power of Facebook to be used by higher education institutions as a key communication tool to provide viewers’ emergent impressions, or frames, of the institution. This study was intended to contribute to the knowledge base of social media and higher education by studying the emergent frames formed from the posts on the official Facebook page of each member university of the Florida State University System.
Thrillology: Affective Intensities And The Everyday-Spectacular In American Literature And Culture, Peter James Pappas
Thrillology: Affective Intensities And The Everyday-Spectacular In American Literature And Culture, Peter James Pappas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
“Thrillology: Affective Intensities and the Everyday-Spectacular in American Literature and Culture” presents thrill as a powerful thematic component centered on immediate affective gratification informing character development and narrative. This perspective rethinks theme as always having an affective dimension that accompanies its conceptual articulations, with the former, in many cases, being the more important element. Thrilled psycho-emotional states emerge, in their own right, as legitimizations of individuality and cultural autonomy from the perspective of the passional subject. Engaging with a broad spectrum of literary and cultural sources spanning the last hundred years, this project investigates various ways in which the self-fulfilling …

Glorious Adornment: The Social Function Of Cloth And Clothing In Israel's Tabernacle, Selena Billington
Glorious Adornment: The Social Function Of Cloth And Clothing In Israel's Tabernacle, Selena Billington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the tabernacle narratives of Exodus, the LORD instructs the Israelites to build a tabernacle and to make special garments in which to consecrate Aaron (proto-type high priest) and his sons (proto-type priests). The garments are to be for Aaron's and his sons' "glorious adornment." Detailed descriptions of the special garments are provided, and the description shares much in common with the descriptions of the cloths which comprise the tabernacle complex. What is there about the unique clothing of Aaron and the cloth of the tabernacle that causes Aaron and the tabernacle to be glorified? What is being said about …

This study represents an analysis of student performance in computer information systems (CIS) courses and the potential influence of Jungian personality traits on academic success in CIS courses. For this study, academic success is measured by grades achieved. The MBTI measurement scale was self-analyzed by students in CIS courses from fall 2008 through spring 2013. The data showed a statistically significant correlation between various personality dichotomies of the type (Extraversion-Introversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and JudgingPerceiving) and higher grades scores. The results of this study indicate that course performance of groups of students are different relative to their personality type. In this …

The Accessibility Of A Classical Music Education To Youth In The United States, Josie Davis
The Accessibility Of A Classical Music Education To Youth In The United States, Josie Davis
Honors Papers
The purpose of this investigation was to examine how classical music education is supported and made available to children in the United States, an underexplored area in the field of music and the arts. The paper examines the relationship between social class and the accessibility of classical music education to youth. The theoretical paradigms of Howard Becker, Annette Lareau, and Pierre Bourdieu argue that lower class families with reduced cultural capital have limited access to the arts and classical music in the U.S. The study incorporates a close examination of current literature, survey data collected from 50 parents who have …
Anomie: Concept, Theory, Research Promise, Max Coleman
Anomie: Concept, Theory, Research Promise, Max Coleman
Honors Papers
The term anomie has declined in the sociology literature. Apart from brief mentions, it has not featured in the American Sociological Review for sixteen years. Moreover, the term has narrowed and is now used almost exclusively to discuss deviance. This project explores Durkheim's original use of the term, and whether modifications of his work--by Merton, Parsons, and others--are useful or muddling. We also present critiques of the term, evaluating them in light of Durkheim's intentions. Possible explanations for the decline of anomie theory are given, including academic explanations (e.g., classical sociology was replaced by newer theories like symbolic interactionism) and …
The Rise And Fall Of Social Problems: Alcohol And Tobacco In Oberlin, Jung Han Guel
The Rise And Fall Of Social Problems: Alcohol And Tobacco In Oberlin, Jung Han Guel
Honors Papers
Oberlin students had lost interest in the prohibition and temperance cause by the time they became popular in the rest of America, particularly during the 1910s and 1920s when the Prohibition movement outside Oberlin was the fiercest. Meanwhile, the students' indifference toward alcohol was replaced by activism of another sort; the tobacco ban, which was enforced since the founding days of the town and college, was lifted and modified in the winter of 1918, two years before national Prohibition of alcohol.
From the theoretical framework of constructionist model of social problems, this paper examines how the rise of individualism and …
Anxious Seas: Reading Affect In Dazai And Murdoch, Joseph B. Lubitz
Anxious Seas: Reading Affect In Dazai And Murdoch, Joseph B. Lubitz
Honors Papers
This paper advances a re-reading of psychoanalytic “anxiety” as it is constructed through the modern novel, invoking contemporary affect theory, and finding an origin in the Heideggerian notions of Stimmung, Unheimlich and Angst. Looking at two works at the margins of the period and genre of the 20th Century modern novel that both share a fascination with introspective male protagonists--a Japanese “I-novel” called No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku) by Dazai Osamu, and The Sea, The Sea, by British writer Iris Murdoch--reveals a peculiar aesthetic questioning of subject and object specific to these works’ varied usages of ekphrasis and fascination with …

Max Scheler's Critical Theory: The Idea Of Critical Phenomenology, Eric J. Mohr
Max Scheler's Critical Theory: The Idea Of Critical Phenomenology, Eric J. Mohr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work explores the way core elements of phenomenology map on to the critical theory program in order to demonstrate phenomenology's relevance for ideology critique. "Critical phenomenology" means putting the findings of phenomenology to work for the sake of social critique. I argue that phenomenology gains a critical edge precisely where many critical theorists suggest phenomenology withdraws from a critical function: on the basis of their theory of intuition. While Adorno takes phenomenological intuition to be another version of identity philosophy, he overlooks the significance of the way in which phenomenological givenness is incommensurable with, and at best only symbolized …

Are Community Food Assistance Programs Meeting The Needs Of Food-Insecure Households In Pittsburgh's North Side Neighborhoods?, Ryan M. Van Dinter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Semi-structured interviews with three householders and three community food program managers were conducted to explore if food assistance programs meet the needs of residents in Pittsburgh's North Side neighborhoods. Findings show that insufficient income is the main factor contributing to household food insecurity. North Side residents also have difficulty obtaining nutritious and affordable foods because fresh produce is often too expensive and supermarket food quality is considered low. Farm stands and other food access programs are well received, but only provide access to nutritious foods during the summer. Limited income and limited food access increase reliance on food pantries and …

Toward A Kairos Of Library Instruction, Emily Drabinski
Toward A Kairos Of Library Instruction, Emily Drabinski
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
Information literacy instruction in libraries is organized by the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. Currently under revision, these Standards define a set of external, abstract learning objectives that have been productive of a teaching role for librarians. Simultaneously, the Standards have generated a substantial critical literature that contests the objectives as a “Procrustean bed” that distracts from the particular teaching and learning contexts. This paper offers an alternative organizing heuristic for instruction in libraries. Kairos is an ancient Greek theory of time married to measure. Used by both Plato and the Sophists to understand the emergence of truth from context, kairos …

The Story Of Delray: A Case Study On Environmental And Restorative Justice In Detroit, Danielle Trauth-Jurman
Honors Projects
An in-depth case study on environmental and restorative justice in Delray, Michigan. Delray was a vibrant, immigrant community with rich history and cultural significance that was slowly transformed into an industrial dumping ground. This evolution drove many middle class families out of Delray and into nicer parts of the city, leaving behind only the elderly and the individuals too poor to move away. Exploring the ideas of environmental justice and examining the current research on environmental inequality.

Bootstrapping With Small Samples In Structural Equation Modeling: Goodness Of Fit And Confidence Intervals, Craig Michael Krebsbach
Bootstrapping With Small Samples In Structural Equation Modeling: Goodness Of Fit And Confidence Intervals, Craig Michael Krebsbach
Open Access Master's Theses
Structural equation modeling (SEM) has become a regular staple of social science research, however very little is known about small sample size use. A sample size of 200 or larger for SEM models has been advocated (Boomsma, 1983; Kline, 2011) and the main test of model fit (χ2 goodness-of-fit) is sample size dependent and performs optimally in a range of at least 200-400 (Kenny, 2012). Model complexity in SEM can vary, however, a simple model could hold potential benefits to a researcher without the ability to attain 200 observations. Thus research with models with less than 200 need to …

Still Hopeful In The Eleventh Hour: A Critical Cultural Study Of The University Of Rhode Island’S Kinesiology Department, Justin Heath Payne
Open Access Master's Theses
My thesis is a critical examination of the cultural practices of the University of Rhode Island’s Kinesiology department 2010-2012, which produces particular norms for what constitutes Kinesiological knowledge. Through the use of the qualitative methods of autoethnography, poetics, a British Cultural Studies optic on the study of everyday cultures, and Foucault’s theory of disciplinary power I attempt to illuminate how a positivistic quantitative Exercise Science way of knowing and studying human movement gets normalized as the privileged form of Kinesiology department. My thesis critically examines my unique experiences as an Exercise Science turned Physical Cultural Studies student as a way …

A Case Study Of Project-Based Learning In An Elementary School Setting, Lauren Nicole D'Ambra
Open Access Master's Theses
Project-based learning (PBL), a form of learning that has its roots in medical schools, has been frequently studied at the secondary and undergraduate/graduate levels. Few studies of this learning approach have been conducted at the elementary level. This study addressed the question of what project-based learning looks like and how it is implemented in the elementary years, as it exists within the context of a whole school. A qualitative case study design was used for the study. A purposeful sample of K through 6 elementary staff was interviewed over a period of 8 months. Analysis of the data showed that …

Pet Advocate Program For The Homeless In Missoula, Mt, Lisa Jane Bruce
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Studies have shown the importance of the relationship that homeless individuals, including victims of domestic violence, have with their pets. This relationship can often create a barrier to accessing emergency shelters since not many shelters accept pets. This paper examines the need to create a community-wide program in Missoula, MT which provides a way to house pets while their owners access emergency shelters. The final section of this paper proposes a “Pet Advocate Program” that could be adopted by the Humane Society of Western Montana.

The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of women in Montana who chose to attempt relactation. A phenomenological approach was utilized to understand the lived experiences of the 10 participants. In depth interviews were conducted and a 21 item, categorical and open-ended survey was administered seeking demographic and experiential data. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to organize and analyze the data. Most participants reported having good support from family, friends, lactation specialists, and/or physicians. Despite this support, the participants experienced breastfeeding difficulty. An overarching theme was having a difficult baby; whether it was colic, latching difficulties, …
