Timeless Growth Principles From The Movement Of Hans Nielsen Hauge: A Case Study In Pietism, David Stein, Frederick Thoni
Timeless Growth Principles From The Movement Of Hans Nielsen Hauge: A Case Study In Pietism, David Stein, Frederick Thoni
Great Commission Research Journal
As existing churches continually face the challenge of staying relevant, and new churches face the challenge of establishing traction in the first place, a fresh look at the dynamics of movements will help both. While large, existing churches can often operate from an institutional focus, new and growing churches have to operate from a movement focus. Declining churches need to recapture the dynamism that helped them come into being in the first place. In order to break free from the status quo a new catalyst must be inserted into the equation in order to move forward to the next level. …

Colleges and universities continue to add diversity and internationalization as major components of their strategic planning efforts. Students from various racial, ethnic and national backgrounds are expected to live and work together in an intellectual environment while bringing with them various views of race and culture that are maintained through varying myths and misconceptions. This study looked at the technical and cultural definitions of what it means to be ‘Black’ in the U.S. and the stereotypes of being classified within that racial category.
The goal of this research study was to understand the experience of students from the African Atlantic …

The Alignment Of Response To Intervention With The Common Core State Standards For English Language Arts, Charles Newman
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative exploratory research study was to examine the perceptions of K-12 educational leaders who have experience related to Response to Intervention (RtI) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This study was guided by the following three research questions: 1. What do K-12 educational leaders who have systems knowledge and experience, related to Response to Intervention and CCSS, perceive as the potential modifications needed to align the assessment components (universal screening and progress monitoring) of Response to Intervention with the CCSS for Language Arts? 2. What do K-12 educational leaders who have systems knowledge and experience, related …
The Noble Experiment, Scarlett Longdon

Many in the early twentieth century believed alcohol to be responsible for the many problems plaguing America. Groups like the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League pressed for prohibition laws banning the sale, manufacture and consumption of alcohol in the belief that it would reduce unemployment, domestic violence and poverty. With a massive push that was decades in the making, the Eighteenth Amendment is passed and prohibition takes effect in January 1920. With the desire to drink still looming over everyone, the illegal alcohol or moonshining business boomed, causing more problems in America and not fixing the old …
Educator Perceptions Of Digital Game-Based Learning In The Instruction Of Foreign Languages In Japanese Higher Education, Stephan J. Franciosi
Educator Perceptions Of Digital Game-Based Learning In The Instruction Of Foreign Languages In Japanese Higher Education, Stephan J. Franciosi
Theses and Dissertations
Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) is an innovative educational approach that is becoming increasingly popular among researchers and practitioners in technologically advanced countries in the West, but is largely unknown or ignored in the instruction of Foreign Languages (FL) in Japanese higher education. This is problematic because more interest in research and implementation among faculty in Japan would likely contribute to the development of DGBL and improve the quality of FL education. The purpose of the present study was to better understand the lack of interest in DGBL in Japan by employing Everett Rogers' Innovation Diffusion Theory to explore the perceptions …

Massively Multiplayer Online Games As A Sandbox For Leadership: The Relationship Between In And Out Of Game Leadership Behaviors, Sean Henry Veloria Mendoza
Theses and Dissertations
Given society's increasingly technology centric play and workplace environment, Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOs) can be an excellent sandbox to develop future leaders of teams, which are the lifeblood of any organization. MMOs like World of WarCraft provide rich immersive experiences that allow leaders and followers the ability to create highly complex ecosystems that can mimic some of the largest out of game organizations. In game they can potentially gain valuable insights, which can later be applied to the workplace. This study explores Leadership characteristics appearing in and out of game. A combination of identity theories and leadership characteristics provide …

Factors Affecting Members' Retention In Toastmasters International, Eleuterio Salvador Buquiran
Theses and Dissertations
Toastmasters International (TI) is a well-known worldwide association focused on communication skills and leadership development. TI clubs are designed to build confidence in public speaking. Despite the benefits that members gain from joining Toastmasters clubs, the organization is concerned with the factors that affect members' retention in TI. This mixed-methods study of TI clubs in Southern California included member surveys completed at club meetings, interviews with club leaders, and the researcher's extensive field notes. A stratified purposeful sampling method was used to ensure that the sample size included each club category and quota of the target population of TI club …
Female Solo Entrepreneurs: A Phenomenological Study, Kimberly J. Shediak
Female Solo Entrepreneurs: A Phenomenological Study, Kimberly J. Shediak
Theses and Dissertations
Females have emerged in the field of entrepreneurship, and have proven that they are here to stay. The field of entrepreneurship was previously dominated by men, but in recent years females have emerged and are facing success in rapid numbers. Currently, 55% of businesses launched in the United States are launched and run by women (Statistical Abstract of the United States Census Bureau, 2007). The phenomenon of entrepreneurial women being successful is not as common or known in other countries of the world as it is in the USA. Women are launching businesses at a rapid rate, and many women …
The Exit Interview: Millennials' Perspectives On Why They Quit, Hannah Bateman
The Exit Interview: Millennials' Perspectives On Why They Quit, Hannah Bateman
Theses and Dissertations
Millennials, individuals born approximately between 1982 and 2002 (Howe & Strauss, 2000) are on average, quitting their jobs within 3 years (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012). Their short job tenure not only impacts organizations negatively (Phillips & Connell, 2003), but it also influences how the Millennials are portrayed in the media. Public perceptions assert (although not supported by substantial evidence) that Millennials quit their jobs because they lack loyalty and have a poor work ethic (Marston, 2013), have extreme confidence in their abilities (Howe and Strauss, 2000), make inappropriate work demands (Erickson, Alsop, Nicholson, & Miller, 2009), and possess high …
"What Is Peoria For?": Reading As Spiritual Practice In David Foster Wallace's The Pale King, Jeremy Reed
"What Is Peoria For?": Reading As Spiritual Practice In David Foster Wallace's The Pale King, Jeremy Reed
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Since its publication in 2011, critics have written about David Foster Wallace’s final, unfinished novel, The Pale King, by looking for resonances with his career-long interests of irony, alienation, and the text’s relation to the reader, but few have written of his final fiction as exhibiting a new approach to these topics. To further such criticism, I argue that in The Pale King Wallace uses new means – religious, and specifically mystic, vocabularies of experience – to seek ethical practices for living in a period heavily influenced by Postmodern irony. In the process, Wallace’s characters end up advocating a mystical …

This Essay examines some of the hard data available for today’s legal market and develops very basic forecasts and hypotheses about what the future will bring for the U.S. legal profession during the next decades. In conclusion, it projects that recent law school graduates and current and future law students are standing at the threshold of the most robust legal market that ever existed in this country—a legal market which will grow, exist for, and coincide with, their entire professional careers. Using admittedly back-of-the-envelope math based on current trends affecting the legal market (in particular, lawyer retirements, population growth, and …

Criminalizing The Transmission Of Hiv: Consent, Disclosure, And Online Dating, Alexandra Mccallum
Criminalizing The Transmission Of Hiv: Consent, Disclosure, And Online Dating, Alexandra Mccallum
Utah Law Review
Ever since Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) was first recognized as a widespread public health problem, policymakers and legal scholars have considered how criminal law should be used to influence the sexual behavior of people with HIV. Surely, HIV is a problem that affects the general health, safety, and welfare of citizens. Thus, as most cases of HIV are transmitted through sexual conduct, states can regulate this conduct pursuant to their police powers. Generally, states that criminalize the transmission of HIV through sexual conduct provide an exception for HIV-positive individuals who disclose their status and obtain consent5 from their partners. However, …

In Vitro Regeneration And Conservation Of The Lentisk (Pistacia Lentiscus L.), İbrahi̇m Koç, Ahmet Onay, Yelda Özden Çi̇ftçi̇
Turkish Journal of Biology
Pistacia lentiscus L. (lentisk or mastic tree) is an economically important member of the genus Pistacia due to its valuable mastic resin. Shoot tips and nodal segments were used as explant sources from in vitro-germinated seeds of lentisk. Shoot tips were found to be suitable for multiple shoot formation. Thereafter, the influences of different growth regulators [N6-benzyladenine (BA), gibberellic acid (GA_3), naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), or jasmonic acid (JA)] together with various elicitors [silver nitrate (AgNO_3) or phloroglucinol (PG)] were assessed to develop efficient micropropagation protocol. Our results showed that the combination of all tested concentrations of GA_3 with 1.0 …
Comparison Of Life Experiences Of Men And Women In The Sciences, Tori Nicole Quist
Comparison Of Life Experiences Of Men And Women In The Sciences, Tori Nicole Quist
Honors Program Theses
A lack of sense of belonging and stereotype threat have been shown to contribute to women leaving the sciences (Seymour, 1997; Beasley & Fischer, 2012; Deemer et al., 2013). Contributing to this is the fact that most women find affirmation externally (through friends, family and professors) for their life decisions (Seymour, 1997; Zeldin, 2000). A set of comparative studies in 2000 and 2008 were done examining factors affecting women’s and men’s choices of majors and careers (Zeldin, 2000 and Zeldin, 2008). These studies concluded that men relied on achievements in science as the source of their career decisions to enter …
The Feeling That You Are Where You Belong: A Qualitative Analysis Of College Music Groups And Student Success, Susan Elizabeth Johnson
The Feeling That You Are Where You Belong: A Qualitative Analysis Of College Music Groups And Student Success, Susan Elizabeth Johnson
Honors Program Theses
“We believe in the power of music to uplift, to inspire, and to help make the world a better place.” These words, from the mission statement of an all-men’s choir at a mid-sized Midwestern university, accurately reflect the attitude that many people have toward music. Music ensembles, both vocal and instrumental, often have a very profound impact on their members, emotionally, socially, and even academically. For college students in particular, these organizations can provide a social structure and support group that helps with the transition from high school to college and helps students deal with homesickness and the unfamiliarity of …

College completion is a complex process involving numerous socioeconomic factors at the individual, institutional, and governmental levels. One important factor is the way in which financial aid is disbursed so that affordability does not serve as a barrier to completion. Awarding scholarships on the basis of merit is one aspect of financial aid structure that has grown in popularity over recent decades, in turn, receiving considerable attention from policy researchers with the intent to assess how they affect an array of postsecondary education outcomes. To date, research of merit-based aid’s effect on college completion has been relatively sparse, yielding contradictory …
Influences On Reported Nonprofit Lobbying Efforts, Alyson Partain
Influences On Reported Nonprofit Lobbying Efforts, Alyson Partain
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
The nonprofit sector holds an interesting role in democracy, as this segment balances the powers of government and business by providing a way to cultivate social justice and afford people a means of acting and promoting interests outside of the government and private sectors. Nonprofit organizations therefore allow people to join together in providing services and programs that strengthen the communities in which they act. Advocacy involves identifying, embracing, and promoting a cause, especially by educating the public about their organization, whether this is through public engagement, coalition building, or lobbying.
Lobbying is a specific but critical component of general …

Sex, Slaves, And Saviors: Domestic And Global Agendas In U.S. Anti-Trafficking Policy, Chelsea L. Thompson
Sex, Slaves, And Saviors: Domestic And Global Agendas In U.S. Anti-Trafficking Policy, Chelsea L. Thompson
Scripps Senior Theses
In this thesis, I problematize the United States’ response to the global phenomenon characterized as human trafficking. The framing of trafficking as policy issue takes place in the context of politicized claims about the nature and prevalence of trafficking, its relation to the sex industry, and the kind of response that is required. U.S. anti-trafficking policy was built and shaped in the context of fears about immigration, global labor, and the sex industry. As a result, trafficking has been used to justify oppressive domestic reactions such as border crackdown, scrutiny of immigrant and sex worker communities, and victim “protection” that …
Diplomacy & Negotiation, Liefke M. Cox
Diplomacy & Negotiation, Liefke M. Cox
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Over the course of history when women have been involved in the diplomatic, political, social, and economic structure of a country it has been found they are one of the key ingredients to building an effective and stable democracy. Investing in women strengthens the back bone of any society. Top CEO’s, such as Tupperware’s Rick Goings and Warren Buffett, have also publically supported this assumption. I argue that women in different societies have traits that have been instilled in them culturally which in turn translate directly to their ability to handle diplomatic situations and business negotiations. Societies, however intentionally or …
Convocations Of Empire: Public Spectacle And Ceremony In Britain, 1851-2012, Ryan G. Hudnall
Convocations Of Empire: Public Spectacle And Ceremony In Britain, 1851-2012, Ryan G. Hudnall
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Britain has long been associated with the staging of grand ceremonies, popular spectacles, massive exhibitions, state occasions, and Royal events which embody historically-informed conceptualizations of “Britishness.” To this end, significant public spectacles occurred periodically from the height of the British Empire until its decline—many of which spoke to the nature of British imperial ambition. This project traces the evolution of those key popular gatherings which relate to the shifting British imperial scene from 1851-2012, providing an in-depth accounting of the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Jubilees of Queen Victoria in 1887 and 1897, the postwar memorial movements after the First …
"Sea Water Fish In A Freshwater Pond:" An Institutional Approach To Understanding Cooperative Scarcity In The United States, Caroline E. Malone
"Sea Water Fish In A Freshwater Pond:" An Institutional Approach To Understanding Cooperative Scarcity In The United States, Caroline E. Malone
Scripps Senior Theses
There is remarkable cooperative organization scarcity in the United States. Particularly in the credit union and worker cooperative sectors, this scarcity is not satisfactorily explained by neo-classical economic models that assume competitive conditions and profit-maximizing organizations. This paper supplements the conventional economic understandings of credit union and worker cooperative scarcity with an institutional analysis. Mechanisms of coercive, mimetic, and normative institutional isomorphism developed in DiMaggio and Powell’s theory of organizational isomorphism are applied to provide greater understanding of credit union and worker cooperative scarcity in the US. It appears that these forces of isomorphism work in conjunction with one another, …

La Tirania De La Invisibilidad: La Necesidad De Reconocer Y Analizar La Violencia De Genero En La Argentina, Laura Mallison
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis examines gender violence in Argentina in the context of the historic continuum of gender inequality, with a more in-depth analysis of gender violence during the 1976-1983 dictatorship. I argue that gender violence is perpetuated and normalized by its lack of recognition as a political issue with ramifications extending to daily life. I use the construction of a collective memory of the Dictatorship as a framework for making the intricacies of gender violence more visible and provide a detailed analysis of two laws against gender violence to demonstrate its systematic nature. Ultimately, laws are not sufficient to address such …

“I’M A Jesus Feminist”: Understandings Of Faith, Gender, And Feminism Among Christian Women, Megan Pritchett
Scripps Senior Theses
The emergence of the Christian Right and the feminist movement in the mid-to-late 20th century have had a significant impact on the political, psychological, and social landscape of the U.S., and this is especially true for Christian women who sit at the cross-roads of these movements. To understand the context surrounding this group, I examine different areas of sociological literature: the primacy of gender and religion in identity formation, Christian marriage and gender roles, the “culture wars” of the Christian Right, and a brief overview of feminist theory. Utilizing qualitative research methods, I interviewed 13 self-identified Christian women to learn …
