Transmuted Exponentiated Fr ˆEchet Distribution: Properties And Applications, I. Elbatal, G. Asha, Vincent Raja Nov 2014

Transmuted Exponentiated Fr ˆEchet Distribution: Properties And Applications, I. Elbatal, G. Asha, Vincent Raja

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Transmuted probability distribution corresponding to a distribution function G(x) is defined as F(x) = (1+l )G(x) −lG(x)2; |l | ≤ 1. In this paper we study some general properties of the transmuted probability distribution function in relation to the base distribution G(x). In particular the transmuted exponentiated Frˆechet (TEF) distribution is studied in detail. The different methods of estimation of parameters such as, weighted least squares and the maximum likelihood estimates of this distribution are studied. Finally, a real time data analysis is performed for this distribution and it is found that this class is more flexible class and it …

Gettysburg’S Faustian Bargain, Kevin P. Lavery Nov 2014

Gettysburg’S Faustian Bargain, Kevin P. Lavery

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

A question to the reader: have you ever visited Gettysburg? Presumably most of the Gettysburg Compiler’s audience will answer in the affirmative. A follow-up question: have you ever purchased a souvenir from one of the town’s abundant gift shops? Perhaps it was a kepi or a cork gun for your child? Or maybe a bottle of “Rebel Red” wine? Or some tacky trinket or faux antique?

Let’s face it: we live in a consumer society in which there is nothing too sacred to profit from. And, sadly, the Battle of Gettysburg is no exception. [excerpt]

Gender Diversity And Same-Sex Marriage, Ian Farrell, Nancy Leong Nov 2014

Gender Diversity And Same-Sex Marriage, Ian Farrell, Nancy Leong

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Opponents of same-sex marriage have recently adopted a curious new argument. The argument goes something like this. The Supreme Court has held that diversity is a compelling state interest in institutions of higher education. Opposite-sex marriage includes gender diversity, while same-sex marriage does not. Therefore, states may allow same-sex marriage while banning opposite-sex marriage — even if the ban triggers heightened scrutiny under equal protection or due process — because opposite-sex marriage furthers gender diversity, while same-sex marriage does not.

The gender diversity argument against same-sex marriage has made its way into a number of briefs during the recent increase …

The Other N Word, Emma R. Okell

SURGE

As we waited for a ride, I noticed my friend’s shirt. It looked strange and disjointed. It was white and black and looked like cut up picture of a contorted woman. Taken aback, I asked what it was.

“I don’t know,” he replied. “I like it because it looks Nazi.” [excerpt]

Triad-Based Role Discovery For Large Social Systems, Derek Doran Nov 2014

Triad-Based Role Discovery For Large Social Systems, Derek Doran

Kno.e.sis Publications

The social role of a participant in a social system conceptualizes the circumstances under which she chooses to interact with others, making their discovery and analysis important for theoretical and practical purposes. In this paper, we propose a methodology to detect such roles by utilizing the conditional triad censuses of ego-networks. These censuses are a promising tool for social role extraction because they capture the degree to which basic social forces push upon a user to interact with others in a system. Clusters of triad censuses, inferred from network samples that preserve local structural properties, define the social roles. The …

Opinion: Too Many Veterans With Children Are Still Homeless, Christopher R. Fee, Joshua L. Stewart

English Faculty Publications

Don’t ignore homeless veterans.

As we pause this Veterans Day to reflect on those who have sacrificed in the service of our country, let us not neglect to address the plight of those who have returned to a civilian life with far less promise than they have every right to expect. [excerpt]

An Exploration Of Collective Meaning-Making Among Migrant Workers, Patturaja Selvaraj Nov 2014

An Exploration Of Collective Meaning-Making Among Migrant Workers, Patturaja Selvaraj

The Qualitative Report

I engaged with workers in India who have migrated from rural districts in the southern state of Karnataka to work in the mess of an academic institute located in a western state of India. These workers faced significant challenges and vulnerabilities due to being part of the unorganised sector. The primary question for my inquiry was to understand how migrant workers negotiated these vulnerabilities and whether they could succeed in processes of informal collectivisation based on shared bonds of language and ethnicity. I interviewed six migrant workers to understand their experiences and difficulties they face. I analysed the data by …

Out Of Our Comfort Zones: Reflections About Teaching Qualitative Research At A Distance, Cheyl A. Hunter, Debora Hinderliter Ortloff, Rachelle Winkle-Wagner Nov 2014

Out Of Our Comfort Zones: Reflections About Teaching Qualitative Research At A Distance, Cheyl A. Hunter, Debora Hinderliter Ortloff, Rachelle Winkle-Wagner

The Qualitative Report

How does an increase in distance technology alter the teaching of qualitative research? This article uses a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (McKinney, 2007) framework in which each author collected data in the form of personal narrative essays about teaching qualitative research from a distance, course products, teaching evaluations, and student comments. Individually we created a narrative reflection on the teaching and learning of qualitative methodology; particularly comparing our individual experiences with both distance and in-person teaching formats. Through these reflective essays, we provide ideas about our teaching of qualitative research via distance technology as a conceptual conversation about the …

Water And Sanitation In Mumbai's Slums: Education Through Inquiry Based Learning In Social Work, Ronald Yesudhas, Patil Lalit, Antony Josy, Shenoy Impana Nov 2014

Water And Sanitation In Mumbai's Slums: Education Through Inquiry Based Learning In Social Work, Ronald Yesudhas, Patil Lalit, Antony Josy, Shenoy Impana

The Qualitative Report

Water and sanitation are the most important services necessary for life and dignity of citizens. But slum dwellers are excluded from these services, resulting in environmental degradation, marginalization and poor health. Through inquiry based learning, the first author has attempted to give his students an first hand and innovative learning experience by helping them to explore water and sanitation issues in the Ambujwadi slum of Mumbai (India) on their own. The paper highlights the pedagogical approach and by the way of illustrations helps the reader to understand its usefulness in teaching students of social work.

Teaching About Propaganda: An Examination Of The Historical Roots Of Media Literacy, Renee Hobbs, Sandra Mcgee Nov 2014

Teaching About Propaganda: An Examination Of The Historical Roots Of Media Literacy, Renee Hobbs, Sandra Mcgee

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Contemporary propaganda is ubiquitous in our culture today as public relations and marketing efforts have become core dimensions of the contemporary communication system, affecting all forms of personal, social and public expression. To examine the origins of teaching and learning about propaganda, we examine some instructional materials produced in the 1930s by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA), which popularized an early form of media literacy that promoted critical analysis in responding to propaganda in mass communication, including in radio, film and newspapers. They developed study guides and distributed them widely, popularizing concepts from classical rhetoric and expressing them in …

Exploring The “Faces” Of Europeanization From An Albanian Perspective, Irma Spahiu Nov 2014

Exploring The “Faces” Of Europeanization From An Albanian Perspective, Irma Spahiu

UBT International Conference

Europeanization is a process existent in all countries applying for EU membership, including Albania. This article aims to explore Olsen’s faces of Europeanization by looking at how this process has taken place in Albania and if it has led to substantial changes in the Albanian politics and governance. It has been argued that Europeanization is a dual process that affects both domestic policies and European Union. The article explores this relationship in the Albanian case. It argues that Europeanization in Albania is occurring in an “Albanian fashion-way” with some unique features which are labelled as ‘Europeanization by convenience’.

The Socio-Cultural And Political Significance Of Coffeehouses And Coffee Culture During The Independence Processes Of Kosovo, Ajhan Bajmaku, Çınar Nartar

UBT International Conference

The coffee culture in the Balkans spread and developed as the Ottoman Empire began using the region as a base that opened into Europe. This region with great strategic significance draws attention not only because it functioned as a bridge between the East and the West but also because of cultural and political values in perspective of the process of changes and developments that have taken place throughout time. As an establishment the coffeehouse is a vital concept for society. Beside their fundamental functions, coffeehouses have gained additional functions over the course of history. These additional functions are directed by …

The Impact Of Affirmative Action Policy On The Employment Of Women In The Private Sector: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Alothman, Atul Mishra Nov 2014

The Impact Of Affirmative Action Policy On The Employment Of Women In The Private Sector: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Alothman, Atul Mishra

UBT International Conference

The principal goal of Affirmative Action policy around the world is to equalise opportunities and to increase the share of employment for minority groups and females. The Saudi Arabian Affirmative Action is no exception; since 1985, it has been a crucial means of ensuring ‘fair participation’ in employment for Saudi citizens. This policy, known as ‘Saudisation’, aims to tackle labour market issues by replacing the high volume of foreign workers with Saudi nationals. However, one of the major criticisms of the policy has been its failure to increase the number of females in private sector employment. Women still comprise a …
