Police Body Cameras In Missouri: Good Or Bad Policy? An Academic Viewpoint Seen Through The Lens Of A Former Law Enforcement Official, Pernell Witherspoon
Police Body Cameras In Missouri: Good Or Bad Policy? An Academic Viewpoint Seen Through The Lens Of A Former Law Enforcement Official, Pernell Witherspoon
Missouri Policy Journal
After the fatal shooting of an African American teenager in Ferguson, Missouri on August 9, 2014, various police departments are exploring the use of body cameras. With tensions high, it is hopeful that body worn camera policies will be based on sound research and that appropriate measures are made to achieve optimum effectiveness. The author of this writing, a former law enforcement official and current academic, presents some challenges that police administrators will need to address toward body camera implementation. Because racism is difficult to accurately measure and police are historically reluctant to provide genuine feedback for researchers, the author …

Statistical Signs Of Social Influence On Suicides, Hygor Piaget M. Melo, André A. Moreira, Élcio Batista, Hernán A. Makse, José S. Andrade
Publications and Research
By treating the suicide as a social fact, Durkheim envisaged that suicide rates should be determined by the connections between people and society. Under the same framework, he considered that crime is bound up with the fundamental conditions of all social life. The social effect on the occurrence of homicides has been previously substantiated, and confirmed here, in terms of a superlinear scaling relation: by doubling the population of a Brazilian city results in an average increment of 135% in the number of homicides, rather than the expected isometric increase of 100%, as found, for example, for the mortality due …

Can Culture Justify Infant Circumcision?, Eldar Sarajlic
Can Culture Justify Infant Circumcision?, Eldar Sarajlic
Publications and Research
The paper addresses arguments in the recent philosophical and bioethical literature claiming that social and cultural benefits can justify non-therapeutic male infant circumcision. It rejects these claims by referring to the open future argument, according to which infant circumcision is morally unjustifiable because it violates the child’s right to an open future. The paper also addresses an important objection to the open future argument and examines the strength of the objection to refute the application of the argument to the circumcision case.

Stitches Of War: Women’S Commentaries On Conflict In Latin America, Deborah A. Deacon
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
In the past thirty years, new forms of women’s textiles began appearing throughout Latin America. The techniques used were not indigenous to the region, yet they were used as forms of self-expression of the horrors and sorrows the women experienced as the result of warfare in the region. In the 1970s Chilean artist Violeta Parra Sandoval introduced arpillera-making to women living in Santiago who experienced first hand the agony of having family members tortured, killed or “disappeared” at the hands of the government. Arpilleras use embroidery and appliqué to create scenes of repression, violence and loss. Banned within Chile and …
“If They Fail That First Year, It’S Very Hard For Them To Recover”: An Exploration Of Factors That Support And Hinder The Transition To Mainstream School For Children With Special Educational Needs And Their Families., Fiona Hassett
Dissertations
The transition to school is increasingly recognised as a significant life event for children, with a positive or negative transition impacting on their social and emotional wellbeing and academic achievements. Children with special educational needs are at an increased risk of a poor adjustment to school and their families are vulnerable to additional stresses due to the child’s special educational needs. The transition to school is therefore an important period for these families, and the supports available to them to make this transition as smooth as possible are essential to provide children with the best possible start to formal education. …

Setting The Bar High: Danish Youth Education Counselors And National School-Completion Goals, Anne Nurse
Setting The Bar High: Danish Youth Education Counselors And National School-Completion Goals, Anne Nurse
All Faculty Articles
European countries are striving to increase secondary school completion rates as part of their labor market planning. Denmark has taken an approach that places youth education guidance counselors at the center of their efforts. Based on interviews with 25 counselors and 10 other education leaders, this article explores the role and practice of these Danish counselors in regard to meeting state education goals. While the counselors strongly support the country’s high educational goal, they have concerns about its attainability, its across-the-board application, and coercive, or ‘individual-blaming’ elements of its implementation. Countries wishing to adopt this model should consider the fit …

The need for and value of civic engagement is widely acknowledged and frequently advocated by students and faculty at American universities. Over the last several decades, recognizing the variety of forms of scholarly research and academic achievement has become commonplace on many campuses. The Carnegie Foundation now assesses and validates community engagement as one critical measure of a university’s identity and success. Many faculty stress community involvement, internships, and various forms of experiential learning in their courses and view them as critical components of a university education. Numerous faculty engage in communityengaged research, working with local organizations, local businesses, and …

A Content Analysis Of Backpage.Com Advertisements In Louisville, Kentucky, Theresa C. Hayden
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 6th (2014)
Backpage.com and Craigslist are replacing the street corner as a crime source for buying and selling of sex. “To reduce commercial sexual exploitation and enforce existing trafficking laws, communities must first recognize the extent of the problem within their local area (Janson, Mann, Marro, & Matvey, 2013, 99). In a population density study conducted in 15 major U. S. cities, it was found that males over 18 years of age who buy sex online ranged from 0.6% in San Francisco to 21.4% in Houston (Roe-Sepoqitz, Hickle, Gallagher, Smith, & Hedberg, 2013). Researchers in the Greater Cincinnati area found a high …

The Social And Economic Implications Of Human Trafficking In Nigeria: Naptip In Focus, Eunice I. Anuforom
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 6th (2014)
Human trafficking is globally recognized as a modern day slavery with multifarious negative socio-economic, legal and health implications. Besides drugs trafficking and gun running, human trafficking has become a lucrative business globally and yields an estimated US$32 million annually. Traffickers trade on human lives, subject them to gory and traumatic experiences in order to make profits. Human trafficking is therefore the worst form of human rights violations and a gender based violence against female who constitute the majority of the victims in the country. Regrettably, Nigeria occupies the ignoble position of a source, transit and destination country for trafficking. In …
Deputized Brokers: A Technique For A Case Study Of Conservative Think Tanks In 1990s Welfare Reform, Sergio Romero
Deputized Brokers: A Technique For A Case Study Of Conservative Think Tanks In 1990s Welfare Reform, Sergio Romero
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study proposes a novel analytical technique in a case study of think tank brokerage. As brokers, think tanks structurally link foundations and media, yet they do so as representatives of a policy network consisting of corporate funders and affiliated think tanks. Print media sought their policy analysis regarding the welfare system and prescriptions for reform. Network and content methods are the bases for the presentation of the technique. The coupling of results from each of the technique's components shows how resources tie actors, as well as how their conversion from one form to another is the basis for a …

Institutional Settings In A Rice Cluster: Assessing The Effects Of Social Capital On Learning In Malaysia, B.K. Ng, A.S. Magli, C.Y. Wong, V.C. Govinda
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Based on a case study of the Sekinchan rice cluster in Malaysia, this paper provides empirical evidence demonstrating that geographic proximity goes hand-in-hand with social capital. The paper argues that the study of social capital within a geographic dimension (such as Regional Innovation Systems and clusters) needs to take place in its institutional context. Thus, agricultural cluster development policies must address the 'soft' elements of the cluster in fostering cooperative relationships and "social contracts" among the cluster actors. Findings also indicate that the cluster's learning processes take place mainly in the form of informal learning and learning by doing, in …

Theories Of Educational Management And Leadership: A Review, Majid Ghasemy, Sufean Hussin
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Education is the main change agent in developing and developed societies. As a result, the management of educational organizations is regarded as one of the most important management perspectives. Basically, educational management is a discipline with respect to the management of educational organizations and since this field of study has been developed on the premises of other resolutely established disciplines, there is not a unique statement to set out this subject of study. Although the process of determining organizational goals is fundamental to educational management, linking between goals and aims of education and actions of educational management may be considered …

Mountain Monitor - 2nd Quarter 2014, Kenan Fikri, Mark Muro
Mountain Monitor Quarterly
Economic growth returned to the 10 major metro areas of the Mountain West in the second quarter of 2014 after slippage in the first quarter of the year. The resumption of vitality progressed unevenly, however. Denver and Salt Lake City pulled ahead as the fastest-growing metro areas in the region. Ogden and Provo’s days of above-average growth appeared to be fading. Las Vegas’ economic recovery advanced strongly, but Sun Belt peers Phoenix and Tucson had more difficulty moving beyond the first quarter’s slowdown. Albuquerque, for its part, welcomed a return to employment and output growth.
Across the region’s 10 major …
