Evidence from sites in the lower Ulua valley of north-central Honduras, occupied between a.d. 500 and 1000, provides new insight into the connections between households, craft production, and the role of objects in maintaining social relations within and across households. Production of pottery vessels, figurines, and other items in a household context has been documented at several sites in the valley, including Cerro Palenque, Travesía, Campo Dos, and Campo Pineda. Differences in raw materials, in what was made, and in the size and design of firing facilities allow us to explore how crafting with clay created communities of practice made …

Dipl 4108 Aa International Political Economy, Naaborle Sackeyfio Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

After the financial crisis of 2008 essentially upended conventional wisdom about the nature of political economy and sent ripple effects across the globe, political scientists and economists have attempted to reconcile prevailing notions about economic governance. Although the financial recession of that year produced numerous analyses of what went wrong and how to fix ‘anomalies’ within the international monetary regime, much of ensuing perspectives and ongoing debates focus on growing integration, capital mobility, finance, and the merits of globalization. This course appropriately examines key historical processes, institutions and the nature of states and markets from the 19th century to …

Global Health Faculty Publications

Global efforts are underway to develop and promote improved cookstoves which may reduce the negative health and environmental effects of burning solid fuels on health and the environment. Behavioral studies have considered cookstove user practices, needs and preferences in the design and implementation of cookstove projects; however, these studies have not examined the implications of the traditional stove use and design across multiple resource-poor settings in the implementation and promotion of improved cookstove projects that utilize a single, standardized stove design. We conducted in-depth interviews and direct observations of meal preparation and traditional, open-fire stove use of 137 women aged …

Taking Care: Understanding The Roles Of Caregiver And Being Cared For In A Kindergarten Classroom, Cassie Quigley, Anna H. Hall Oct 2014

Taking Care: Understanding The Roles Of Caregiver And Being Cared For In A Kindergarten Classroom, Cassie Quigley, Anna H. Hall

Publications

Despite concerns about the importance of teachers learning to care for their students, most teacher education programs do not utilize relational pedagogy and place little emphasis on caring. In the current study, the authors used conversational interviews with one kindergarten teacher and photo-elicitation interviews with her 22 kindergarten students to explore ways in which this teacher in a public, all-girls’ school employed caring and how her students viewed being cared for. The authors utilized Noddings’ work on the ethic of care to guide our project and the methodological approach is feministic. In this study, we discovered the ways this teacher …

The Poetics Of Talk In Robert Louis Stevenson’S Treasure Island, Amy Wong Oct 2014

The Poetics Of Talk In Robert Louis Stevenson’S Treasure Island, Amy Wong

Collected Faculty Scholarship

This essay considers the relationship between Robert Louis Stevenson’s well-loved adventure classic Treasure Island and his philosophical commitments to talk. For Stevenson, talking and adventuring share an experiential poetics that emphasizes responsiveness to unpredictable interactions. By examining several of Stevenson’s prose pieces, including “Talk and Talkers” and “My First Book” as well as Treasure Island, this essay argues that the novel aspires to translate the poetics of talk into a print medium. Treasure Island imagines itself as a form of “living print,” a work that, like Long John Silver’s parrot, seems more dynamic than print typically is, yet is …

Hidden In Plain Sight: Exploring The Vulnerabilities Of Street-Working Boys In Se Asia, Jarrett Davis, Glenn Miles Oct 2014

Hidden In Plain Sight: Exploring The Vulnerabilities Of Street-Working Boys In Se Asia, Jarrett Davis, Glenn Miles

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 6th (2014)

The sexual exploitation of men and boys is often little understood and commonly goes ignored. Internationally, it is said that 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before reaching adulthood and in some nations the exploitation and abuse of boys far outweighs that of girls. Social and cultural norms often assume men and boys to be inherently strong and/or invulnerable to sexual exploitation; however, research in this area continues to show these assumptions to be false. Because of this lack of awareness, the efforts of the organizations and individuals who work to provide for the needs of male victims are …

Media Influence On Drive For Thinness And Drive For Muscularity, Mary Pritchard, Brooke Cramblitt Oct 2014

Media Influence On Drive For Thinness And Drive For Muscularity, Mary Pritchard, Brooke Cramblitt

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The present study investigated relationships between media influence (exposure, self-comparison to media ideals and internalization of media messages, societal pressure to have the perfect body, using media as a source of information about how to achieve a certain body ideal) and drive for thinness and drive for muscularity in 311 male and female undergraduates at a university in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States. We hypothesized that drive for thinness and drive for muscularity in both women and men would relate to body comparison/internalization, societal pressure, use of media for information, magazine consumption and television viewing. We also …

The Multidimensional Prospects For L2 English Legal Writing, Jongkyung Park Oct 2014

The Multidimensional Prospects For L2 English Legal Writing, Jongkyung Park

Open Access Theses

Due to a rapidly rising population of international law students in the United States, considering the guiding role of language specialists in L2 legal writing has become more critical than ever regarding academic curricula and research as well as prospective professional practice. Given the lack of rich body of research on L2 legal writing, this thesis contemplates how legal writing curricula and research could be practically beneficial to L2 English learners (especially to those with legal backgrounds), through the researcher's own point of view as a L2 English-speaking lawyer. For this purpose, the researcher investigates diverse approaches to L2 legal …

The Grand Strategy Of The United States, R.D. Hooker

Strategic Monographs

From the earliest days of the Republic, the outlines of an evolving American grand strategy have been evident in our foreign and domestic policy. Much of that history continues to inform our strategic conduct, and therefore American grand strategy rests today on traditional foundations. Despite a welter of theory and debate, grand strategy as a practical matter is remarkably consistent from decade to decade, with its means altering as technology advances and institutions evolve but its ends and ways showing marked continuity.

Risk Attitudes And Characteristics Of Student Pharmacists Across Cohorts, Kristin Rose Villa Oct 2014

Risk Attitudes And Characteristics Of Student Pharmacists Across Cohorts, Kristin Rose Villa

Open Access Theses

In unstable environments, adaptation is a prerequisite for survival of organizations or groups. The Affordable Care Act has created a changing environment for health care providers. Unfortunately for Pharmacy, innovation within our profession has languished, leaving pharmacists in a precarious position. Many have noted the stagnation of the profession; in fact it has been a recurring theme in the commentary over the last five decades. The dialogue has focused on the externalities that represent barriers to the profession's evolution, including the direction change should take and the legal or organizational issues that inhibit change and innovation. Little attention has been …

'It's Not Something I'M Proud Of But It's . . . Just How I Feel': Local Surfer Perspectives Of Localism, E Beaumont, D Brown

Plymouth Business School

This article focuses on a defining concept of modern surfing: localism. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the data for this study were collected using participant observation, field notes and interviews between 2008 and 2009 with a significant population of local surfers in a village location in Cornwall, South West of England, UK. Developing Bennett’s definition of localism, data suggested a benign form of localism and in conveying this, we make a number of associated observations. Our analysis considers how a process of Othering led to the construction of Established Insiders based primarily on location, rather than gender. These Established Insiders …
