A Qualitative Analysis Of Students' Perceptions Of Pursuing Pharmacy As A Potential Vocation, Michael W. Firmin, Valerie Bouchard, Jordan Flexman, Douglas C. Anderson Jr. Oct 2014

A Qualitative Analysis Of Students' Perceptions Of Pursuing Pharmacy As A Potential Vocation, Michael W. Firmin, Valerie Bouchard, Jordan Flexman, Douglas C. Anderson Jr.

The Qualitative Report

We present the findings from a phenomenological, qualitative research study that explored the personal constructs of an inaugural class, entering a newly-established direct-entry, preferred admission, pre-pharmacy program at a private, selective, Midwestern university with an enrollment of 3000. The focus of the study was to appraise students' perceptions regarding their rationale for pursuing a future career in pharmacy. The sample consisted of 36 students (26 females, 10 males). Data was collected via in-depth interviews of each student who had enrolled in the first year of the program. Overall, students demonstrated their belief that they would be a good fit for …

Qualitative Case Study Guidelines, Saša Baškarada Oct 2014

Qualitative Case Study Guidelines, Saša Baškarada

The Qualitative Report

Although widely used, the qualitative case study method is not well understood. Due to conflicting epistemological presuppositions and the complexity inherent in qualitative case-based studies, scientific rigor can be difficult to demonstrate, and any resulting findings can be difficult tojustify. For that reason, this paper discusses methodological problems associated with qualitative case-based research and offers guidelines for overcoming them. Due to its nearly universal acceptance, Yin’s six-stage case study process is adopted and elaborated on. Moreover, additional principles from the wider methodological literature are integrated and explained. Finally, some modifications to the dependencies between the six case study stages are …

Ethical Dilemmas Of Emerging Latina Researchers: Studying Schools Serving Latina Communities, P. Zitlali Morales, Lilia D. Monzo Oct 2014

Ethical Dilemmas Of Emerging Latina Researchers: Studying Schools Serving Latina Communities, P. Zitlali Morales, Lilia D. Monzo

The Qualitative Report

This article explores some of the ethical dilemmas we have encountered as emerging Latina researchers in dual language school contexts. Informed by Chicana Feminist Theory, we attempt to analyze power in more nuanced ways, shifting the analysis of ethics away from traditional notions of power based only within the researcher rather than the participants. While we do not offer solutions to these dilemmas, we raise questions that we hope will spur thoughtful reflection and move the field of educational research into more equitable and ethical research practices across contexts.

Perceptions Of The Contract-For-Service Relationship: The Impact Of Trust, Abby M. Foreman, Matthew R. Fairholm Oct 2014

Perceptions Of The Contract-For-Service Relationship: The Impact Of Trust, Abby M. Foreman, Matthew R. Fairholm

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This paper discusses contract-for-services, the dominant mechanism of social service delivery in the United States. The development of the use of contract-for-services mechanism in social service delivery in the 20th century is outlined as well as the increasingly interdependent relationship that exists between nonprofit social service organizations and the government. The contracting relationship itself is one that is inherently insecure, which is assumed to create competition and create an incentive for high performance. Evidence, however, indicates that competition is often less than vigorous in social service contracting. In addition, there is a growing consensus that trust is a central component …

Women Religious And Sociopolitical Change In The Philippines, 1930s–1970s, Coeli Barry

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle develops a framework for the study of spirituality and the congregational lives of women religious in the Philippines from the 1930s to the early 1970s. It explores the multiple and sometimes contradictory meanings of membership of women in religious communities. Set within the history of women religious in the Catholic Church, the study explains the transformations in the originally Belgian order, the Immaculé Coeur Marie (ICM), while also drawing on the experiences of women leaders from other congregations. Thisarticle looks at the Filipinization of leadership and subsequent reshaping of congregational ideologies in the context of the Second Vatican Council …

Catholicism’S Democratic Dilemma: Varieties Of Public Religion In The Philippines, David T. Buckley Oct 2014

Catholicism’S Democratic Dilemma: Varieties Of Public Religion In The Philippines, David T. Buckley

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

As representatives of public religion in a postauthoritarian setting, Catholic elites face a democratic dilemma: they exert social influence, but cannot control directly the outcomes of democratic politics. Catholic responses in the recent debate on reproductive health reveal diversity, even at the highest levels of the Philippine Catholic hierarchy. Thisarticle catalogues three distinct varieties of public Catholicism that respond to the democratic dilemma and identifies their impacts on the internal life of the church and on alliances between the church and other social actors. These dynamics are illustrated with an analysis of the reproductive health debate and its fallout in …

Marian Piety And Modernity: The Perpetual Help Devotion As Popular Religion In The Philippines, Manuel Victor Sapitula Oct 2014

Marian Piety And Modernity: The Perpetual Help Devotion As Popular Religion In The Philippines, Manuel Victor Sapitula

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle argues that Marian piety in the form of the Perpetual Help Devotion exemplifies “modern popular religion,” which has grown through mechanisms of strategic accommodation and creative refashioning in response to urban transitions in Metropolitan Manila and the ecclesiastical elites’ regulation of piety. Differences between religious authorities and devotees have produced diversified devotional practices, which retain their relevance due to an ethic of self-care that enables devotees to craft identities and self-understandings in the modern context. Rather than a threat, modernity provides opportunity structures and resources that enable religious beliefs and practices to respond to the exigencies of modernity.KEYWORDS: Popular …

Popular Religion And The Turn To Everyday Authenticity: Reflections On The Contemporary Study Of Philippine Catholicism, Jayeel S. Cornelio Oct 2014

Popular Religion And The Turn To Everyday Authenticity: Reflections On The Contemporary Study Of Philippine Catholicism, Jayeel S. Cornelio

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The seminal works on everyday religion in the Philippines that appeared in the 1960s were motivated by pastoral concerns. Since the 1990s, however, there has been a growing interest in everyday religion as authentic expressions of what it means for individuals to be Catholic. This turn in the scholarship of social scientists and religious scholars has been driven less by the question of secularization than the demand for religion’s local relevance. Thisarticle explores the conditions under which the turn to authenticity has emerged in Philippine studies: the socioeconomic contexts, the expansion of the social sciences, the changing attitudes to religious …

Urban Religious Change At The Neoliberal Frontier: Notes Toward A Spatial Analysis Of A Contemporary Filipino Vernacular Catholicism, Paul-François Tremlett

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle sketches a theoretical point of departure for a spatial analysisof a contemporary Filipino vernacular Catholicism. Based on materialsfrom religious studies, the sociology of religion, and ethnographic andhistorical materials, it focuses on the new neoliberal spatial dynamicsof Manila and the extent to which recent shifts in its spatial constitutionmight be correlated with shifts in the sites and occasions of contemporaryCatholicism, and in particular with the emergence of El Shaddai. It asks: Ifincreasingly the neoliberal city is eviscerated of public and civic spaces, canEl Shaddai serve to revitalize and reenchant the city?KEYWORDS: Filipino Catholicism • Religious Change • Neoliberalism • Spatial …

First Generation Minority Students: Understanding The Influential Factors That Contributed To Their Preparation And Decision To Pursue Higher Education, Alexis Shawnee Palacios Cabrera

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

The purpose of this research was to explore and understand the experiences of first generation minority students at Portland State University. First generation students are students whose parents have not earned a four-year degree or the equivalence of a bachelor’s degree in the United States. By looking at factors that contributed to college decision making process, such as family, peers, high school educators, and high school mentor programs, we can better understand how these factors influence students’ experiences. A qualitative analysis was used to assess the responses from 42 students collected through an online survey. This study looked at how …
