Panoply: Haitian And Haitian-American Youth Crafting Identities In U.S. Schools, Fabienne Doucet Jul 2014

Panoply: Haitian And Haitian-American Youth Crafting Identities In U.S. Schools, Fabienne Doucet

Trotter Review

In the United States, where race is a powerful factor for social stratification (Appiah & Gutmann, 1998; Glick-Schiller & Fouron, 1990a; Omni & Winant, 1986), foreign-born Blacks find themselves battling the demoralizing impacts of discrimination, racism, and xenophobia on a daily basis. In the school context, racist assumptions have been shown to predispose teachers to have lower expectations of immigrant students and other students of color, to view them more often as behavioral problems, and to assume that their parents do not value education (Doucet, 2008, 2011b; Suárez-Orozco, Suárez-Orozco, & Todorova, 2008). At the same time, the powerful influence of …

On The Inside Looking In: Methodological Insights And Challenges In Conducting Qualitative Insider Research, Melanie J. Greene

The Qualitative Report

As qualitative researchers, what stories we are told, how they are relayed to us, and the narratives that we form and share with others are inevitably influenced by our position and experiences as a researcher in relation to our participants. This is particularly true for insider research, which is concerned with the study of one’s own social group or society. This paper explores some of the possible methodological insights and challenges that may arise from insider research, and suggests several techniques and tools that may be utilized to aid in, rather than hinder, the process of the telling and sharing …

How Does One Design Or Evaluate A Course In Quantitative Reasoning?, Bernard L. Madison Jul 2014

How Does One Design Or Evaluate A Course In Quantitative Reasoning?, Bernard L. Madison

Numeracy

In the absence of generally accepted content standards and with little evidence on the learning for long-term retrieval and transfer, how does one design or evaluate a course in quantitative reasoning (QR)? This is a report on one way to do so. The subject QR course, which has college algebra as a prerequisite and has been taught for 8 years, is being modified slightly to be offered as an alternative to college algebra. One modification is adding a significant formal writing component. As the modification occurs, the current course and the modified one are judged according to six sets of …

It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Evaluating The Use Of Video Observations With Behavioral Clinical Supervision, Jeffrey Brian Smith Jul 2014

Evaluating The Use Of Video Observations With Behavioral Clinical Supervision, Jeffrey Brian Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The current study evaluated three methods by which clinical feedback may be delivered to practicum students and how those methods effect various aspects of supervision. Specifically, participants were asked to deliver feedback to a student while either (a) watching them practice behavioral activities with a client via video, (b) viewing a video of a student and waiting a duration of time before providing supervision, and (c) offering feedback when no video was observed of the student engaging in practicum activities. Measures were developed to help assess the quality of supervision delivered within these three conditions and included:(a) the duration of …

Latino Outreach Initiative, Mayra Alza, Rhonda Mercs

Catholic Education Summit

Our country’s demographics are dramatically changing. According to national statistics, one in every five children in the United States is of Latino origin, making Latinos the nation’s fastest growing school-age population. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Latino Outreach Initiative has touched the lives of children and their families in many of the city's urban Catholic schools. Since 2011, this work has become a critical asset for information and support to Catholic schools and the Latino community. In Ohio, the Latino population has grown by 63.4% in the past ten years (U.S. Census), making it more critical to work with this population …

Successful strategies included bus advertisements, early pairing of teens with mentors, using electronic media, convenient meeting times with a meal, providing child care, transportation vouchers and immediate incentives. Conclusions: This study highlights impediments to teen mother research recruitment and …

"Nigger": A Critical Race Realist Analysis Of The N-Word Within Hate Crimes Law, Shayne E. Jones, Gregory S. Parks Jul 2014

"Nigger": A Critical Race Realist Analysis Of The N-Word Within Hate Crimes Law, Shayne E. Jones, Gregory S. Parks

Criminology Faculty Publications

On a 2005 summer morning, Nicholas “Fat Nick” Minucci (White) beat Glenn Moore (Black) with a baseball bat and robbed him. During the assault, Minucci repeatedly screamed the N-word. At trial, Minucci’s attorney argued that he had not committed a hate crime. The essence of the defense’s argument was that Minucci’s use of the N-word while assaulting and robbing Moore was not indicative of any bias or prejudice. The defense went on to indicate that Minucci had Black friends, was immersed in Black culture, and employed the N-word as part of his everyday vocabulary. Two Black men—Gary Jenkins (hip hop …

The Role Of Disability In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Amanda H. Heggen Jul 2014

The Role Of Disability In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Amanda H. Heggen

Special Education ETDs

The social construction of disability posits that media play an important role in the construction of disability. Few studies have systematically examined the role of disability in film or television. Engaging in a multiple perspective analysis, this dissertation examined the role of disability in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Data were analyzed with a content analysis, a thematic analysis, and an ideological rhetorical criticism. Disability was found to be used as a tool of character, plot, and atmosphere development. The data also suggested that negative assumptions of disability, often reinforcing of stereotypes, were readily apparent in the series …

"Wake Up The Knowledge That You Have": An Assessment Of Community Food Security In Fellsmere, Florida, Susan Marie Tyler Jul 2014

"Wake Up The Knowledge That You Have": An Assessment Of Community Food Security In Fellsmere, Florida, Susan Marie Tyler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the global industrial agricultural system many people lack access to high-quality nutritious foods and food production techniques are often inefficient and reliant on harsh chemical inputs. While numerous strategies exist to address the disparities present in the global food system, increasingly researchers and practitioners are looking to local food systems for solutions to strengthen community food security (CFS). CFS emphasizes small-scale production strategies such as farmer's markets, community gardens, and consumer supported agriculture. As these efforts evolve, research is needed to understand how these strategies affect communities. To explore a local CFS initiative, qualitative data were collected from community …

Profiles In Giving, Gerry Boyle, Matt Apuzzo, Alicia Nemiccolo Macleay

Colby Magazine

It's hardly news that Colbians leave Mayflower Hill and go on to do important things for their communities, for their countries, for humanity. But the breadth of their contributions, from making a small town a better place to shaping international policy, is easy to take for granted.

On the following pages are representatives of many, many more alumni who see it as their responsibility to give back in some way. Physicians who donate their time all over the world, actors who use the stage to remind us of social ills, clergy who give hope where there otherwise would be very …
