Family Affairs Newsletter 2014-11-01, Zack Paakkonen Nov 2014

Family Affairs Newsletter 2014-11-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Universities Need To Do More To Prevent Heterosexism To Support Lgb Students’ Academic Success, M.R. Woodford Nov 2014

Universities Need To Do More To Prevent Heterosexism To Support Lgb Students’ Academic Success, M.R. Woodford

Clear Language Summaries

Heterosexism can affect lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) students’ academic success. Peer-group support and general faculty support do not protect students from the impacts of heterosexism, but is still important. To prevent poor academic outcomes, campuses must have spaces in which students feel safe to come out and heterosexism needs to be eliminated on campus.

Advancing The Transition To A High Performance Rural Health System, Charles Alfero Ma, Andrew F. Coburn Phd, Jennifer P. Lundblad Phd, Mba, A. Clinton Mackinney Md, Ms, Timothy D. Mcbride Phd, Keith J. Mueller Phd

Health System Reform

There are growing concerns about the current and future state of rural health. Despite decades of policy efforts to stabilize rural health systems through a range of policies and loan and grant programs, accelerating rural hospital closures combined with rapid changes in private and public payment strategies have created widespread concern that these solutions are inadequate for addressing current rural health challenges. The rural health system of today is the product of legacy policies and programs that often do not “fit” current local needs. Misaligned incentives undermine high-value and efficient care delivery. While there are limitations related to scalability in …

Research & Strategic Partnerships: Quarterly Review, Volume 2, Issue 1, Portland State University. Research & Strategic Partnerships

Portland State Research Magazine

This Review describes connections among Portland State University, society's needs, and innovation: engineer Evan Thomas’s public health program in Rwanda, chemist Steve Reichow's protein research in the Collaborative Life Sciences Building, environmental historian Catherine McNeur's look back at urban agriculture in New York City, the "My Life" mentoring program for foster teens, and "Reclaiming Futures" interventions that help at-risk kids avoid incarceration.

It also focuses on EXITO. EXITO, Portland State University's largest-ever federal grant, awarded by the NIH to a team headed by Professors Carlos Crespo and Tom Keller. In the next decade, EXITO will help hundreds of underrepresented students …

Pharmacy Student Perceptions: How Do They Change And What Does That Mean?, Erika Lynn Michalski Nov 2014

Pharmacy Student Perceptions: How Do They Change And What Does That Mean?, Erika Lynn Michalski

Dissertations

With healthcare moving rapidly toward interprofessional expectations, this study examined the perceptions of a particular population of students pursuing a degree in the healthcare field. Pharmacy students attending a free-standing pharmacy institution were interviewed over the course of the 2012 – 2013 academic year. Interviews were conducted before, during, and after the students engaged in collaborative coursework with students from a variety of health care majors attending a nearby institution. The results demonstrated the positive impact exposure to peer students pursuing degrees in health care fields can have. Results of the interview process highlighted the impact intentional interaction with a …

John Evans Study Report

With the completion of this report the University of Denver is presented with an opportunity to reflect on our institutional origins, history, and legacy. We have an opportunity to provide a model of transparency, accountability, and transformation for institutions that have directly profited or indirectly benefited from the displacement of the indigenous communities whose lands and histories they occupy. This moment invites us to bend the arc of history away from the clamor of old apologetics that have caused deep wounds for those whose voices have been silenced and toward justice, healing, and peace. This likewise holds for those whose …

Neo-‐Colonial Criminology: Quantifying Silence, Antje Deckhert Nov 2014

Neo-‐Colonial Criminology: Quantifying Silence, Antje Deckhert

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

In Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States of America, Indigenous peoples continue to experience incarceration at markedly disproportionate rates. Some scholars have criticised criminology for contributing to this social problem by marginalising Indigenous peoples in research and research publications. This study is a first attempt to quantitatively evaluate the (de)colonised state of contemporary criminology. It involves a comprehensive review of research on ‘Indigenous peoples in the criminal justice context’, which has been undertaken in aforesaid countries and was published in elite criminology journals over the past decade (2001-‐2010). The findings reveal that publication rates on the subject are …

Indigegogy: A Transformative Indigenous Educational Process, Gus Hill Phd, Alicia Wilkinson Msw

Lyle S. Hallman Social Work Faculty Publications

Social work training programs have not been able to keep step with the needs of Indigenous people since the advent of the profession. As former agents of government assimilation, social workers now find themselves in difficult positions where they are unable to help Indigenous people, despite their best intentions. Indigenous Social Work Education has become a necessary response to the growing needs of Indigenous people, and increasing social problems in Canada. Furthermore, Indigenous people who practice Indigenous social work have become vital to the survival of Indigenous people and their communities. The teaching and practice of Indigenized, social work education …

Educational Guide: Refugee Children's Storytelling Across Curriculum, Laurie Dishman Nov 2014

Educational Guide: Refugee Children's Storytelling Across Curriculum, Laurie Dishman

Theses and Dissertations

The United States is facing a continuous increase in the amount of refugees seeking refuge in the States. This continuous increase places a strain on the current education system that is underequipped to handle an influx of students with very special and unique needs. This thesis discusses these needs and one method of addressing these needs in a way beneficial to refugee students. The method involves traditional storytelling in refugee family's homes being used in the classroom. This method was put into practice into a classroom without any refugee students and is also discussed in this thesis.

Criminal Justice As A Colonial Project In Contemporary Settler Colonialism, Juan Marcellus Tauri, Ngati Porou Nov 2014

Criminal Justice As A Colonial Project In Contemporary Settler Colonialism, Juan Marcellus Tauri, Ngati Porou

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This paper offers an Indigenous-centred, critical perspective on the Colonial Projects (Thomas, 1994) employed in settler-colonial contexts to negate, or at the very least nullify, the negative impact of two inter-related ‘wicked problems’ that are deemed peculiar to these jurisdictions: the high levels of Indigenous over-representation in the criminal justice system, and the impact of Indigenous resistance to the hegemony of the imposed, criminal justice systems deployed by settler-colonial states. The paper is comprised of three inter-related parts; the first two outline the construction and deployment of Colonial Projects in the colonial and neo-colonial contexts, wherein it is argued that …

Reaching Backward And Stretching Forward: Teaching For Transfer In Law School Clinics, Shaun Archer, James Parry Eyster, James J. Kelly Jr., Tonya Kowalski, Colleen F. Shanahan

Journal Articles

In thinking about education, teachers may spend more time considering what to teach than how to teach. Unfortunately, traditional teaching techniques have limited effectiveness in their ability to help students retain and apply the knowledge either in later classes or in their professional work. What, then, is the value of our teaching efforts if students are unable to transfer the ideas and skills they have learned to later situations?

Teaching for transfer is important to the authors of this article, four clinical professors and one psychologist. The purpose of this article is to provide an introduction to some of the …

Social Workers As Social Change Agents: Social Innovation, Social Intrapreneurship, And Social Entrepreneurship, Monica Nandan, Manuel London, Tricia Bent-Goodley

Faculty Articles

This article explores and describes social innovation, social intrapreneurship, and social entrepreneurship practiced by social workers within human service organizations. Each year, the nature and complexity of clients’ problems and challenges experienced by communities continuously evolves and grows. These challenges call for social workers to lead and facilitate social change that can have a lasting impact on communities and people. The authors report findings from an exploratory, descriptive study conducted with ten social workers on these practices. The findings point to the need to develop and integrate these contents within social work education and further promote dual-degree graduate programs.

The Confluence (2009-2020)

The stained glass windows of St. Mark's Episcopal Church became a controversy among St. Louisans in the 1930s with their politically charged depictions, which were the brainchild of one man, Bishop William Scarlett. Windows depicting all -too-familiar scenes are paralleled with contemporary ones, but they may not be the ones you would expect.

Sociology Faculty Works

National health initiatives emphasize the importance of eliminating health disparities among historically disadvantaged populations. Yet, few studies have examined the range of health outcomes among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. To stimulate more inclusive research in the area, we present the Health Equity Promotion Model—a framework oriented toward LGBT people reaching their full mental and physical health potential that considers both positive and adverse health-related circumstances. The model highlights (a) heterogeneity and intersectionality within LGBT communities; (b) the influence of structural and environmental context; and (c) both health-promoting and adverse pathways that encompass behavioral, social, psychological, and biological …

Unexpected Challenges: Youth, Public Housing Reform And Mixed-Income Development, Mark L. Joseph Nov 2014

Unexpected Challenges: Youth, Public Housing Reform And Mixed-Income Development, Mark L. Joseph

Faculty Scholarship

In this brief, we explore the role of and responses to youth in three mixed-income communities in Chicago— Oakwood Shores, Park Boulevard, and Westhaven Park—built on the footprint of large public housing complexes as part of the Chicago Housing Authority’s (CHA) Plan for Transformation. We draw on the perspectives of residents and development professionals expressed in interviews, focus groups, and through field observation, although we were not able to speak with youth directly. We examine both expectations about youth in mixedincome developments and perceptions of how young people contribute to social dynamics and interaction in these contexts. We also explore …
