The article offers information on the long-term effects of divorce on children and parents under the analysis of the social science literatures. “The Cane Of Love:” Social And Cultural Reform Of Corporal Punishment In South Korea, Seney Higginbotham

International ResearchScape Journal

With the public release of a very controversial video of a middle school teacher beating a student, much attention has been put on South Korea domestically as well as internationally to establish and reform policies regarding corporal punishment in schools. Since corporal punishment has been practiced in the classroom for centuries, it has been a hard fought battle of rapid social change and conservation of culture between those who wish to protect established cultural norms that accept corporal punishment in the classroom versus progressive ideas that strive to protect the integrity and human rights of school children.

In this review of the book, Participatory Action Research (PAR) by author Alice McIntyre, I write from the perspective of a PhD student at the beginning of her doctoral social work program and who is considering using PAR in her future research. I highlight McIntyre’s description of PAR, its application as a research technique, the challenges that confront the researcher, and the rewards that could result from the PAR approach.

First Amendment Enclave: Is The Public University Curriculum Immune From The Sweep Of The Compelled Speech Doctrine?, Joseph J. Martins

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Seventy years ago, in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, the United States Supreme Court eloquently held that the state could not compel public schoolchildren to salute the flag while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The decision has been heralded as one of the Court’s most significant free speech cases because it acknowledged expansive protection for freedom of conscience. But recently, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit held that Barnette’s protection does not extend to college students who challenge their public institution’s curriculum because university enrollment is “voluntary.” The impact of this …

Experiences of Volunteers in Refugee Resettlement

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the experiences of volunteers mentoring refugees resettled in the Atlanta area. Every year since 1980, the United States has resettled people who have been defined as refugees by the United Nations. Refugees come with few material resources and bring even greater ethnic variation into the country than other immigrants do. The federal government contracts with voluntary, non-governmental agencies to do the resettlement. Because of limited staff and funding, these agencies rely on volunteers to help in the resettlement process. This study describes the experiences of ten volunteers of varied age, …
