Under What Conditions Does Caseworker-Caregiver Racial/Ethnic Similarity Matter For Housing Service Provision? An Application Of Representative Bureaucracy Theory, Jennifer E. Blakeslee, Emmeline Chuang, Alicia Bunger, Bowen Mcbeath

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, we examine child welfare caseworkers’ housing-related service strategies when they serve culturally similar versus culturally dissimilar clients. Testing hypotheses drawn from representative bureaucracy theory and using data from the second cohort of the National Survey of Child and AdolescentWell-Being, we find that when non-Caucasian caseworkers share the same racial/ethnic background as caregivers, caseworkers use more active strategies to connect caregivers to needed housing services. The relationship between racial/ethnic matching and frontline workers’ repertoire of service strategies is most pronounced when the need for housing has been registered formally via referrals and case plans and thus legitimated institutionally. …

Predictors Of The Use Of Respite Services By Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Patients: Racial And Generational Differences, Gary T. Deimling, Wendy J. Looman

Sociological Practice

This research applies one prominent model of service utilization (the Andersen- Newman Model) to better understand the way in which family care givers utilize respite services when caring for older relatives. Specifically, this research examines racial (black and white) and generational (spouse and adult-child) differences between caregivers of Alzheimer's patients and the volume and type of respite services used. The sample (N= 359) is drawn from six Northeast Ohio programs in a consortium that uses a personal computer-based information system to collect intake, assessment, service use, and program satisfaction data from respite clients. Racial differences are found in client attrition …

The Rural Elderly: Providers' Perceptions Of Barriers To Service Delivery: Providers' Perceptions Of Barriers To Service Delivery, C. Neil Bull, Share Decroix Bane Feb 2014

The Rural Elderly: Providers' Perceptions Of Barriers To Service Delivery: Providers' Perceptions Of Barriers To Service Delivery, C. Neil Bull, Share Decroix Bane

Sociological Practice

A 1989 survey of the State Units on Aging (SUAs) produced five themes that seem to underlie the many barriers to the delivery of services to the rural elderly. A systematic review of these five themes led to the identification of 34 specific challenges or barriers, which were then placed under the appropriate theme. Such a schema has been outlined in order to aid social service providers, researchers, and students in making sense of the problems faced by the increasing number of rural elderly. In addition, in order to assess the relative importance of these barriers, a second survey of …

Health Literacy And Children Language Brokers: How Bilingual Children And Spanish- Speaking Parents Navigate The Medical Setting, Luz Maria Carreno

UCUR

Significance: Patients' health literacy, or ability to comprehend and understand health information, influences their health status, knowledge about medical care and conditions, and hospitalization and adherence rate (Andrus, & Roth, 2002). Low-English proficiency patients are especially at risk, given they must overcome English and health literacy barriers. Background: Oftentimes, children of patients with limited English language skills will language broker, or translate cultural and linguistic information for their parents (Morales & Hanson, 2005). This paper 1) analyzed health literacy levels of children who language broker and 2) sought to understand how parents and children combine their knowledge, as the skills …

War Of The Words: Aliens, Immigrants, Citizens, And The Language Of Exclusion, D. Carolina Nunez Feb 2014

War Of The Words: Aliens, Immigrants, Citizens, And The Language Of Exclusion, D. Carolina Nunez

BYU Law Review

Words communicate more than their ordinary dictionary meaning. Words tell us about individuals' and communities' conscious and subconscious perceptions. The words we use are evidence of how we think, which, in turn, ultimately determines what we do. In this paper, I examine and compare the usage of the words "immigrant," "alien," and "citizen" to make observations on the nature of membership and belonging in the United States. While it is perhaps intuitive that these words carry very different connotations, here I use corpus linguistics to explore those connotations. I rely on the Corpus of Contemporary American English, a database of …

In The Shadow Of Best Interest: Negotiating The Facts, Interests, And Interventions In Child Abuse Cases, Gene Kassebaum, David B. Chandler Feb 2014

In The Shadow Of Best Interest: Negotiating The Facts, Interests, And Interventions In Child Abuse Cases, Gene Kassebaum, David B. Chandler

Sociological Practice

Most cases of child abuse and neglect are not as extreme or clear-cut as those reported in the media. In routine cases the perpetrator is usually a family member, the evidence of injury is ambiguous and the identity of the perpetrator is uncertain. Prosecution, removal of the child, and therapy for the family are sometimes contradictory mandates which courts and social service agencies must balance.

Norm centered negotiation is the decision making process found in this study of child protective work. Child protection workers sometimes negotiate with families in their decisions to confirm abuse, representatives of different agencies negotiate with …

Sociologists And The Processing Of Conflicts, Maria R. Volpe, Peter R. Maida Feb 2014

Sociologists And The Processing Of Conflicts, Maria R. Volpe, Peter R. Maida

Sociological Practice

Sociologists bring a unique perspective to the study of the processing of conflicts. They may be experts in substantive areas in which alternative dispute resolution (ADR) techniques are used as well as experts in process such as getting the parties to the table and keeping them there to discuss the issues. Sociologists are also trained to observe social interactions and remain neutral in their analyses of what they observe. The authors discuss the contributions that sociologists can make in the study of ADR, including theoretical, research, and critical works on conflict resolution process.
