Job Satisfaction And Burnout Among Forensic Interviewers, Christina M. Chiarelli-Helminiak May 2014

Job Satisfaction And Burnout Among Forensic Interviewers, Christina M. Chiarelli-Helminiak

Doctoral Dissertations

Job satisfaction and burnout among social workers is well-documented in the literature, yet there is a paucity of research in this area pertaining to forensic interviewers. Forensic interviewers, specially trained professionals who conduct structured interviews with children who have made allegations regarding abuse, may be particularly vulnerable to burnout as a result of their work. A cross-sectional electronic survey design was used to gather information from 148 forensic interviewers associated with Children's Advocacy Centers (CAC) located in the Northeast region of the United States. While the quantitative and qualitative findings of this research indicate forensic interviewers are satisfied with their …

Demands And Rewards Of Working Within Multidisciplinary Teams In Pediatric Oncology: The Experiences Of Canadian Health Care Providers, Sonia Gulati, David Dix, Anne Klassen

The Qualitative Report

Pediatric oncology care in Canada is delivered by multidisciplinary teams consisting of healthcare providers with different areas of expertise. Limited information is available on how the multidisciplinary team influences jobrelated rewards, demands, and stress in pediatric oncology. A qualitative approach was adopted to learn about healthcare providers’ experiences of working within a multidisciplinary team in pediatric oncology. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 33 healthcare providers (13 oncologists, 9 nurses, 5 social workers, and 6 child-life specialists) from four pediatric oncology centres. Topics explored included: demands and rewards associated with how the multidisciplinary team worked; description of one’s area of expertise; …

Service Learning And Its Transformative Effects On The College Experience, Randi Charters, Cassie Hailey, Mary O'Brien, Dashiauna Washington

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Research has shown that students who engage in service learning often display transformation in the classroom, within themselves, or within the community. Service learning is a growing area of focus at Valparaiso University, a small liberal arts college in Indiana. We are interested in examining the prevalence of service learning on the Valparaiso University campus and the relationship between service learning and students’ college experience. Approximately 100 students will be anonymously surveyed. The sample will be students who have been enrolled or are currently enrolled in courses that require a service learning component or students who have participated in a …

Mental Health Stigmas And Counseling Center Utilization, Christina Crawley, Johannah Facer, Simone Ingram, Cara Odom, Sara Watts May 2014

Mental Health Stigmas And Counseling Center Utilization, Christina Crawley, Johannah Facer, Simone Ingram, Cara Odom, Sara Watts

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Persons with mental illness have been marginalized for generations. For many years, those with mental illness were institutionalized or incarcerated. This history of mental health and mental health treatment leaves behind stereotypes and stigmas that are still present today. There has been an increase in those who experience mental illness, particularly traditional-aged college students (18-24). Research shows that the number of students with severe psychological illness is steadily increasing on college campuses. Yet, on a yearly basis, only about one-third of persons with mental illness seek professional treatment (Bathje & Pryor, 2011). The aim for this study is to discover …

Emotional Responses Upon Study Abroad Reentry, Amanda Jonikaitis, Patty Carrillo, Maleni Angon, Lindsey Dever

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The purpose of this study is to explore the negative emotional responses of United States college students upon return from study abroad experiences. Research has demonstrated that college students coming back from study abroad opportunities experience phases depicted in Lysgaard's original U-Curve model adjustment theory (Lysgaard's, 1955). The U-Curve theory stages of assimilation include honeymoon, culture shock, recovery, and adjustment phases upon reentry into one's previous culture. We will survey approximately 200 students at Valparaiso University, a small liberal arts college in Indiana, who have recently studied abroad. This correlational study will look at the relationship between emotional responses and …

The research question for this study is “Does watching sexually-oriented reality television programming increase the frequency of viewers’ sexual activity?” The participants for this study are approximately 200 college-aged students from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. Participants will take an anonymous questionnaire that asks them about their reality television watching habits (e.g. what kind of reality television they watch and approximately how many hours per week they spend watching reality television), how …

Beating South Africa's Endless Plague: Making Life Easier For Hiv/Aids Orphans, Shannon Garrity May 2014

Beating South Africa's Endless Plague: Making Life Easier For Hiv/Aids Orphans, Shannon Garrity

Honors Program Theses and Projects

There are many modern beauties on this earth, including the incredible power of twenty-first century science and technology. But, due to many socio-economic injustices and current wars, these modern ‘beauties’ do not reach everyone. The spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa is a pertinent example of a social and public health issue disabling millions of people from obtaining their basic necessities. Although South Africa is the richest country on the African continent, it continues to contain the highest number of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS worldwide. One out of five adults is diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in South Africa; this has left over …

Parental Perceptions And Experiences Of Physical And Emotional Violence Between Siblings: A Mixed-Methods, Comparative Case Study, Nathan Perkins May 2014

Parental Perceptions And Experiences Of Physical And Emotional Violence Between Siblings: A Mixed-Methods, Comparative Case Study, Nathan Perkins

Theses and Dissertations

Sibling violence is a common occurrence for many children yet this form of family violence has received minimal attention in research compared to other forms of child maltreatment. With parents as an integral component in the lives of many children, parental perceptions and experiences of violence between siblings are important to understand. Furthermore, with the increased variation in family structures within society, inclusion of multiple types of families in research is necessary to encompass a broad understanding of sibling violence. This case study included seven parents from four different family structures to examine their perceptions and experiences of physical and …

Peer Acceptance And The Emotional Well-Being Of Disabled Individuals, Abigail Burmeister May 2014

Peer Acceptance And The Emotional Well-Being Of Disabled Individuals, Abigail Burmeister

Perspectives

This study is about how knowing someone with a disability affects an individual’s level of acceptance for others who have a disability. In addition, this paper will also look at previous research on how different levels of peer acceptance affect the emotional well-being of those with disabilities. Under the supervision of our professor and the university staff, my classmates from Methods of Sociological Research at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and I compiled a list of research questions pertaining to our individual studies and sent the link to our Qualtrics survey to approximately 300 other UNH students via Facebook …

The Impact Of Generational Differences On Organizational Relationships: A Communication Perspective, Mecca M. Salahuddin

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed methods sequential explanatory study was to investigate the relationship between an individual’s generation and the communication styles used with other generations, and explore the influence of intergenerational communication styles on organizational relationships. The study utilized the Global Perceptions of Intergenerational Communication (GPIC) survey to assess participants’ perceptions of others and one’s own communication styles on three factors: accommodation, nonaccommodation, and respectful avoidance. Three hundred and eighty-five participants of staff and administrators employed at five community colleges located in South Texas completed the survey. Principal component analyses and multiple analysis of variance analysis results showed the …
