Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The unexpected many years of global conflict since 9/11 have taken their toll on more than just the service members – their families, most especially their children, have paid a significant price by living with the anxiety and stress associated with multiple deployments, safety concerns for the absent parent or caregiver, media coverage overload, and often additional family responsibilities or relocation. National Guard and Reserve forces were activated to join with Active Duty on the battlefield leaving many children in a strange new world – being in a military family and not knowing other military kids in similar circumstances, whether …

Contact In Foster Care: Bridge Or Collision Between Two Worlds?, João M. S. Carvalho, Paulo Delgado
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
This study aims not only to analyze the contact in foster care in Portugal compared to results collected from other studies but also to define the implications of its practice so as to propose improvements to the child protection system. It involves 289 foster children from the District of Porto whose results were obtained from official records. Subsequently, this study discusses the insights and practical consequences, the importance of maintaining up-to-date information on the changes of the biological family, the need to improve specific skills in social workers, and how to overlook the negative results of visits regarding the advantages …

The Prevention Of Child Physical Abuse And Neglect: An Update, Geoffrey Nelson, Rachel Caplan
The Prevention Of Child Physical Abuse And Neglect: An Update, Geoffrey Nelson, Rachel Caplan
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
We reviewed research that has evaluated prevention programs for child abuse and neglect. A few universal educational and parenting programs (e.g., abusive head trauma educational programs, enhanced pediatric care interventions) have been found to be effective. Moreover, a few selective home visitation programs (e.g., the Nurse-Family Partnership program), have shown evidence that they can prevent child abuse and neglect. As well, there is some evidence that multi-component programs are successful. Finally, the research on the importance of program length and intensity as a moderator of program effectiveness is mixed. While the evidence base of effective prevention programs for child abuse …

Family Cap: An Evaluation Of Child Exclusion Policies In Massachusetts, Gregory Ashe
Family Cap: An Evaluation Of Child Exclusion Policies In Massachusetts, Gregory Ashe
Public Affairs Capstones Collection
Between 1992 and 1998, 24 states including Massachusetts adopted provisions specifically designed to reduce the fertility rates of welfare recipients. These adopted measures became known as Family Caps. Under Family Cap, families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) cash assistance would not receive increased aid for having another child. Proponents of this measure believe that by eliminating the financial incentive to have additional children, individuals on welfare would subsequently have smaller families. In this paper, I have used the most up-to-date TANF national data file to determine if an association between states with a family Cap provision and the …

Health, Health Perceptions, Healthcare Practices, And Influencing Factors Among Korean Immigrants Living In Rural Texas, Mary Beth Winton
Health, Health Perceptions, Healthcare Practices, And Influencing Factors Among Korean Immigrants Living In Rural Texas, Mary Beth Winton
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
The population of Asian immigrants in the United States increased 43.3% from 2000 to 2010. During the same period, Texas experienced an increase of Korean immigrants of over 47%. Despite the increase of Korean immigrants, only a minimal number of studies explored health and healthcare needs specific to this population. Furthermore, none of the studies addressed Korean immigrants living in rural Texas. Hence, an ethnographic study was conducted to examine the health and healthcare among Korean immigrants living in rural Texas. Face-to-face interviews were conducted and transcribed. Five major themes emerged which included acculturation, health and health perceptions, healthcare, relaxation …

Experiences With Pregnancy Of Adolescents With Disabilities From The Perspectives Of The School Social Workers Who Serve Them, Kristen Faye Linton, Heidi Adams Rueda
Experiences With Pregnancy Of Adolescents With Disabilities From The Perspectives Of The School Social Workers Who Serve Them, Kristen Faye Linton, Heidi Adams Rueda
Social Work Faculty Publications
Adolescents with disabilities are more likely than adolescents without disabilities to become pregnant, although very little is known about the lived contexts of their sexual and pregnancy experiences. Such youths are often deprived of sexual health information across a range of potential sources, although school social workers are in a unique position to provide them services. Thirteen school social workers working primarily with adolescents with disabilities were interviewed using a phenomenological study design to offer their perspectives concerning the sexual and pregnancy experiences of such youths. Inductive content analysis revealed that school social workers provided services for pregnant and parenting …

Check And Connect With Secondary Education, Jarmarcus D. Johnson
Specialist in Education Degree (Ed.S.) Theses
Marks (2000) reported engagement in the classroom leads to achievement and contributes to students' social and cognitive development. There have been several studies on the Check and Connect (CNC) intervention, however there is little research on its effectiveness on high school students who lack engagement and display disruptive behaviors. In this study, a multiple-baseline across participants design was used to determine the effects of a CNC intervention on student disruptive behaviors among students with and without disabilities in the 9th grade of high school. Three high school students age 13-16 with persistent disruptive behaviors participated in this study. Data …

International Health And Aging: Observation And Analysis Of Elderly Care In Migori, Kenya, Amy Correll
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
While generally respected in Kenya, elders are not primary recipients of health care services in later life. This research documented the need for geriatric specific care and the availability of resources for seniors in Migori, Kenya. Lastly, a set of 5 recommendations was developed to guide the delivery of health services provided to older residents in this small village sector of 6000. After a literature review and analysis of existing demographic data, a needs assessment instrument was developed to guide gathering of relevant data from Migori. Using a research protocol approved through the WKU IRB Committee, the Primary Investigator interviewed …

The Umoja Curriculum: Linking The African American Experience With Relationship Skills Building, Jamye Hardy
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Literature on premarital counseling groups and five factors of the African American experience were researched to design a six-week premarital counseling group curriculum specifically for African American couples. The five researched factors of the African American experience were history, economics, education, structure of American society, and social life within the African American community. This program responds to the falling marriage rates within the African American community and the absence of services available to address the issue. The Umoja Curriculum was designed to equip participants of African descent with the skills necessary to build and sustain a healthy marriage utilizing psycho-educational …

This paper will review the evaluation research on restorative justice (RJ) in cases of intimate partner violence. What do we know about how well RJ ensures the safety and immediate needs of survivors? What do we know about how well survivors feel a sense of justice as a result of these practices? What do we know about the ability of these practices to hold offenders accountable, and to prevent further offending?
