Exploring And Utilizing The Concept Of Setting Conditions In The Functional Assessment Process, Linda Aldridge, Richard Harrison, Kimberly Harrison, Cherie Blanchat
Exploring And Utilizing The Concept Of Setting Conditions In The Functional Assessment Process, Linda Aldridge, Richard Harrison, Kimberly Harrison, Cherie Blanchat
Journal of Adolescent and Family Health
Functional assessment is embedded in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1997) and Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) (Horner & Carr, 1997). While the process of functional assessment has helped many students become more successful in the educational setting, it is time to take a deeper look at those conditions from which behaviors originate. Such conditions, referred to in this article as setting conditions, often serve to initiate and sustain inappropriate behaviors that are the focus of the functional assessment. Unless directly analyzed, setting conditions weaken the impact of interventions focused solely upon those factors targeted in the Antecedent Behavior …

Redefining The Prison Milieu, Emily Lodato
Architecture Thesis Prep
Spaces of solitary confinement and isolation are the most detrimental to the mental health of any patient. In order to influence positive mental health, spaces must promote human interaction with the objective of instilling a sense of community in the inmates. A community is composed of varying architectural elements that create private and public spaces with different types of restrictions at different times.

Family responsibilities discrimination (FReD) is a novel concept in the Philippine workplace. It is novel not because it is a new occurrence but because societal awareness is a fairly recent phenomenon following its unprecedented surge in popularity in the United States that began with the publication of the book, “Unbending Gender: Why Family and Work Conflict and What to Do About It” in 2000 by Professor Joan C. Williams.
Understanding, Selecting, And Integrating A Theoretical Framework In Dissertation Research: Creating The Blueprint For Your “House”, Cynthia Grant, Azadeh Osanloo
Understanding, Selecting, And Integrating A Theoretical Framework In Dissertation Research: Creating The Blueprint For Your “House”, Cynthia Grant, Azadeh Osanloo
Administrative Issues Journal
The theoretical framework is one of the most important aspects in the research process, yet is often misunderstood by doctoral candidates as they prepare their dissertation research study. The importance of theory-driven thinking and acting is emphasized in relation to the selection of a topic, the development of research questions, the conceptualization of the literature review, the design approach, and the analysis plan for the dissertation study. Using a metaphor of the “blueprint” of a house, this article explains the application of a theoretical framework in a dissertation. Steps for how to select and integrate a theoretical framework to structure …

Care Transitions: Assessing Delivery Gaps In Services System In Erie County, Megan Keogh
Care Transitions: Assessing Delivery Gaps In Services System In Erie County, Megan Keogh
Public Administration Master’s Projects
Abstract
The Affordable Care Act of 2010 introduced many changes to the United States healthcare system, such as payment reimbursement, care coordination and the delivery of services within Medicare and Medicaid. One area of concern is the rates of 30-day, avoidable, hospital readmissions. Care Transitions programs have proven to reduce hospital readmissions, but the availability of these programs in Erie County is unknown. An inventory of all Care Transition programs currently used in Erie County was performed in order to assess the services systems, identify gaps in service, and determine how to address them. In order to complete the inventory …

Entre Los Hombres Y Las Bestias: La Jerarquía Ontológica Inexistente En Don Quijote, Michelle Markell
Entre Los Hombres Y Las Bestias: La Jerarquía Ontológica Inexistente En Don Quijote, Michelle Markell
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
"Entre los hombres y las bestias: La jerarquía ontológica inexistente en Don Quijote" explores particular episodes in Cervantes' El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha (The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quijote of la Mancha) through the lens of animal studies, seeking to challenge the ontological distinction and presupposed hierarchy between animals and human beings. This paper focuses particularly on the episodes involving the transportation of don Quijote in a cage (I.48), Eugenio the goatherd that speaks affectionately towards his goats (I.50), the story of the crazy man from Seville told by the barber (II.1), don Quijote's failed attempt at battling …

You Are Not What You Eat: The Myth Of School Food And Child Obesity, Elana Needle
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Abstract of the Dissertation You are Not What You Eat: The Myth of School Food and Child Obesity by Elana Needle Doctor of Philosophy in Social Welfare Stony Brook University 2014 Childhood obesity is a hot topic in the research and policy literature, as well as in the popular press. However, much of the present research concentrates on one or a few variables, rather than adequately assessing the underlying structures that inherently complicate the childhood obesity epidemic. Using a logistic regression examining the school food environment in the 8th grade wave of the ECLS-K data set, this study's findings supports …
Acculturation Experiences Of Latina Immigrants In Suffolk County, New York: A Grounded Theory Study, Jennifer Wood
Acculturation Experiences Of Latina Immigrants In Suffolk County, New York: A Grounded Theory Study, Jennifer Wood
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This study examines the process of acculturation for female Latina immigrants in Suffolk County, New York. Thirty in-depth audiotaped interviews were conducted with adult women who were born in Mexico, El Salvador, or Ecuador and a theoretical model for acculturation was constructed using grounded theory methodology. The model reflects the lived experiences and perceptions of the participants. It also provides a number of factors involved in the acculturative process and attainment of acculturative goals for the participants. Social, psychological, cultural, and environmental supports and barriers are presented that impact the acculturative process. Findings suggest that the level of acculturation attained …
Gender, Power, And Inequality: An Examination Of The Causes And Consequences Of Queer Intimate Partner Violence, Bethany Marie Coston
Gender, Power, And Inequality: An Examination Of The Causes And Consequences Of Queer Intimate Partner Violence, Bethany Marie Coston
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Violence is a not a new social phenomenon--at least, in the sense that violence has occurred throughout history between individuals, within communities, and practiced by institutions. But mainstream sociological studies of violence are all too often studies of men's violence. This project is an attempt to challenge critically the specter of heteronormativity that haunts the theories and praxis of intimate partner violence (IPV). Under this preexisting framework, studies have focused on men's violence against woman and used patriarchy as an explanation (i.e. the unequal distribution of gendered power, with men benefiting). However, I want to know if gender is still …
Sexual Decision Making In The Context Of Hookup Culture; A Mixed-Method Examination, Rachel Kalish
Sexual Decision Making In The Context Of Hookup Culture; A Mixed-Method Examination, Rachel Kalish
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation is a multi-method study of college students' sexual decision-making. It relies on interviews and focus groups to examine how college students make decisions within the context of the " hook-up culture" (Heldman and Wade 2010) prominent on American campuses. Patterns in the qualitative data are examined quantitatively using the Online College Life Survey. To understand how students make decisions in hookup culture, I examine their views of relationships, how they enact relationships, and the effects of hooking up on relationships. I that students envision relationships in their future, and choose not to expend time on them during their …
The Effect Of Stress And Perceived Social Support On Job Satisfaction: A Comparison Between U.S Born And Foreign-Born Faculty, Lisa Owen
Dissertations
Research indicates that academic work-stress is a significant and growing problem for faculty members. General work-stress studies suggest that social support may buffer the negative impact of stress on faculty job satisfaction. To date, little research has been conducted in this area. Even fewer studies have examined the potential differences between U.S.-born and foreign-born faculty members regarding these variables. This quantitative, non-experimental multivariate study utilized a survey to assess academic stressors, perceived departmental social support, and job satisfaction at a large U.S. university. The surveyed institution consisted of 807 full-time faculty members. The three-week survey yielded a response rate of …
