Family Affairs Newsletter 2014-06-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. An Assessment Of Risk Factors For Early Death Among A Sample Of Previously Incarcerated Youth, Patricia A. Stoddard Dare, Miyuki Fukushima Tedor, Linda M. Quinn, Christopher A. Mallett

Social Work Faculty Publications

Most previous research regarding early death prior to, or during, young adulthood among previously detained delinquent youth has focused predominantly on males or on their cause of death. This study extends previous research by evaluating potential factors that are associated with early death in a random sample (N = 999) of formerly detained youthful offenders in New York stratified by gender (50% female). Existing case records were referenced with the National Death Index to determine if the formerly detained youth were deceased by the time they would have reached age 28. Regression analyses were run to determine if any of …

How Quickly We Forget: Comments On “A Historical Analysis Of Evidence-Based Practice In Social Work: The Unfinished Journey Toward An Empirically Grounded Profession”, Anne E. Fortune

Social Welfare Faculty Scholarship

The Social Service Review article, “A Historical Analysis of Evidence-Based Practice in Social Work: The Unfinished Journey toward an Empirically Grounded Profession,” by Nathanael J. Okpych and James L-H Yu, is the kind of article that makes you sit up and say, “That’s revisionist history!” “What new ideas!” “I wish I had written that!” “But that’s not what I know!” Such an ambivalent response suggests that it is a groundbreaking article or at least one that will stimulate discussion and reassessment of what we know. Constructivism suggests both that there are many legitimate worldviews and that it is worth knowing …

Sources Of Stress Among Parents Of Children With Intellectual Disabilities: A Preliminary Investigation In Saudi Arabia, Mubarak S. Aldosari, Lisa A. Pufpaff

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

This study identified differences in sources of stress between parents of male children with intellectual disabilities in Saudi Arabia. Seventeen pairs of parents completed the Parent Stress Index (Abidin, 1995). Each pair of parents had a male child diagnosed with intellectual disability who either attended an institute for male children with intellectual disability or a special education classroom attached to a public elementary general school in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Results indicated higher perceived stress levels in Saudi mothers compared to fathers regarding the overall parent-child relationship, the child’s individual characteristics, and the parent’s characteristics. Implications provide research-based …

Fulton County Business Court: A Specialized Solution For The Modern Business Community, Megan K. Johnson Jun 2014

Fulton County Business Court: A Specialized Solution For The Modern Business Community, Megan K. Johnson

Georgia State University Law Review

Business courts or complex commercial divisions are growing in popularity as an effective tool to channel the most complex civil cases into one place before experienced judges with the background and training necessary to resolve the sophisticated issues often presented in those cases. According to North Carolina Business Court Judge Ben F. Tennille, one of the first judicial advocates of the business court model, the evolution of specialty business courts is a necessary response to “‘the rapidly increasing complexity, rate of change and globalization of business.’”

In 2005, Fulton County Superior Court launched a Business Case Division (“Fulton Business Court”) …

Learning Styles Of Physical Therapist Students: Changes Following A Problem-Based Learning Experience, Yi-Liang Kuo Jun 2014

Learning Styles Of Physical Therapist Students: Changes Following A Problem-Based Learning Experience, Yi-Liang Kuo

Journal of Medical Education

Background: Learning style refers to the way an individual prefers to perceive and process information in a learning situation. The culture of reticence and respect for authority may pose challenges for Asian students during problem-based learning (PBL) that requires students' active engagement. It was unclear how a PBL experience would shape learning styles of Asian students. This study identifies the preferred learning styles of Taiwanese physical therapist students, and reports on changes in students' learning styles following a PBL course. Methods: Thirty-six 3rd-year undergraduate physical therapist students (92% of the total cohort) completed the Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (version 3.1) …

Looking For A Solution: Social Justice Education And Its Impact On Adolescent Empowerment, Anita Thawani

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Schooling can often function as a mechanism of oppression specifically for low-income and minority youth. This study is an exploration of how a social justice education impacts adolescent empowerment. It is an attempt to gain a deeper knowledge into the ways participants were influenced by this form of schooling, a pedagogy derived in response to silenced youth to be agents of social change. In an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between social justice education and empowerment, and to investigate their lived experiences during high school and the ways in which empowerment emerged in their lives, I …

Exploring The Dreams Of Hospice Workers, Shirley A. Hess, Sarah Knox, Clara E. Hill, Tara Byers, Patricia Spangler Jun 2014

Exploring The Dreams Of Hospice Workers, Shirley A. Hess, Sarah Knox, Clara E. Hill, Tara Byers, Patricia Spangler

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Nine adults who worked at least 1 year with patients at US hospice centers completed an in-person audiotaped dream session focusing on a dream about a patient. Data were analyzed using consensual qualitative research. Patients were generally manifestly present in participants’ dreams, and dreams were typically realistic (ie, not bizarre). In the dream, the dreamer typically interacted with the patient as a caretaker but was also typically frustrated by an inability to help as fully as desired. Dreams gave dreamers insight into the stress of hospice work, their own fears of death, and inter-/intrapersonal interactions beyond hospice work. Dreamers generally …

Parental Mental Health: The Role Of Parental Attachment To Their Child With Asd, Adrianna Elyse Holness Jun 2014

Parental Mental Health: The Role Of Parental Attachment To Their Child With Asd, Adrianna Elyse Holness

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research suggests that parents of children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) experience higher levels of stress than both those of typically developing children and children with other developmental disabilities. Parental stress may spill over into additional domains of parental competence, impairing parental mental health, and parents’ ability to bond with their child. Little research has addressed the impact of the parent-child bond on parental stress. The current study used data from the Mindful Awareness for Parenting Stress project (MAPS) at Loma Linda University to further our understanding of parents’ attachment to the child and parental stress examining whether parental …

Parental Depression And Child Behavior Problems: A Closer Examination, Yangmu Xu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have higher rates of depressive symptoms, and parental depressive symptoms are strongly associated with problem behaviors in children. However, the direction of effect between parental depression and child behavior problems is unclear. Additionally, the mechanisms through which parental depression contributes to child behavior problems and vice versa are not well understood. The purpose of the present study is to examine the relationship between parental depression and child behavior problems among families of children with ASD; more specifically to investigate as mediating variables that may explain the mechanisms through which parental depression and …
