Religious Silence: British Quakerism And British Buddhism Compared, Sandra Bell, Peter Collins Nov 2014

Religious Silence: British Quakerism And British Buddhism Compared, Sandra Bell, Peter Collins

Quaker Studies

In this paper we explore the communicative function of silence among British Quakers and British Theraviida Buddhists. Both examples link silence to stillness with the implication that non-activity is a means of evoking sacred presence. It is proposed that such an evocation is achieved through attaching aesthetic and ethical value to the performance of stillness and silence. Furthermore, we suggest that the identity of each of these religious communities is, in many respects, defined through the emphasis that is placed on the existential and moral significance of silence.

An Evaluation Of The Doctrine Of The Inward Light As A Basis For Mission - As Exemplified By Quaker Approaches To Jews And Muslims In The Seventeenth Century, Kathleen Thomas

Quaker Studies

The concept of the Inward Light, variously understood, was the basis for Quaker missionary activity m the seventeenth century. Quakers made attempts to convert Jews and Muslims, both by going out to meet them and by writing tracts and epistles. Considerable use was made of the Hebrew Scriptures and of the Qur'an. The conversionist approach proved unsuccessful, and this led to a change in the Quaker understanding of mission.

Money Matters - The Experience Of English Friends In Stavanger, 1885-1900, David Adshead Nov 2014

Money Matters - The Experience Of English Friends In Stavanger, 1885-1900, David Adshead

Quaker Studies

The economic depression in Norway in the mid- 1880s led to the virtual bankruptcy of two of the key members of the Stavanger Meeting at a time when there was also a crisis of leadership following the death of Endre Dahl for so long the leader of the Quaker group there. A small group of English Friends led by Walter Morris (later, Morice) made an appeal for funds so as to be able to make commercial loans and thus ease the situation for Carl Nyman and Peter Fugilie who had by now made arrangements with their creditors. But just as …

Religion’S Transformative Role In African Education: A Zambian Perspective, Brendan P. Carmody Nov 2014

Religion’S Transformative Role In African Education: A Zambian Perspective, Brendan P. Carmody

Zambia Social Science Journal

Although religion forms part of the educational curriculum in much of sub-Saharan Africa, its nature and role tend to be greatly restricted. By way of taking the situation at the University of Zambia (UNZA) as a case study, it will be argued that the teaching of religion as more truly conceptualized, as well as a person-centred pedagogy, can make a distinctive contribution and realize some of its transformative potential. This may provide a more appropriate paradigm for much needed transformative education in the region.

Accounting For The Shift Towards ‘Multifaith’ Religious Education In Zambia, 1964 -2017, Nelly Mwale, Joseph C. Chita, Austin M. Cheyeka

Zambia Social Science Journal

This article sheds light on the factors that contributed to the development of ‘multifaith’ Religious Education (RE) in Zambia after 1964. Our analysis makes a contribution to the discourse on inter-religious RE in Zambia by demonstrating how Zambia became a multifaith society, a context in which political statements and ideologies have influenced the framing of the aim, and selection of, the content of the subject. Research for this article consisted of interviews with Christian missionaries who shared with us their involvement in developing, teaching and evaluating standards of the teaching of RE. We also carried out an appraisal of literature …

Difference And The Establishment: An Asian Canadian Senior Pastor's Evangelical Spatiality At Tenth Avenue Alliance Church In Vancouver, Bc, Justin K. H. Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper explores how the evangelical spatiality of an Asian Canadian senior pastor at a historically Anglo-Saxon congregation has transformed it from an ethnically homogeneous, aging church to a heterogeneously-constituted gathering in an evangelical Protestant tradition. This piece challenges the conventional wisdom of the church growth movement and the new religious economics in the sociology of religion, both of which advise religious groups to construct homogeneity and consensus in efforts for numerical growth over against secularizing forces. The paper argues instead that Pastor Ken Shigematsu’s evangelical spatiality from the mid-1990s to the present must be understood as a theological embrace …

Jian Ghomeshi And Secular Sexualities, Justin Kh Tse Nov 2014

Jian Ghomeshi And Secular Sexualities, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The public conversation swirling around Jian Ghomeshi’s termination from the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) is a grand exercise in secular sexualities. It begins with his Facebook post. Explaining that he was fired because of his private BDSM consensual acts with an ex-girlfriend, he castigates the CBC for both acknowledging that his acts were consensual and then wrongfully pulling the plug on him because he would serve as a poor role model.

Moral Issues In The Recent History Of The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Ivelina Nikolova Nov 2014

Moral Issues In The Recent History Of The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Ivelina Nikolova

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Over the past centuries Bulgarian people experienced severe religious and ethnic threats due to which they have developed defense mechanisms and a strong sense of sympathy for persecuted ethnic and social groups. In recent history, this reflex was manifested most clearly in the behavior of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in defense of the Bulgarian Jews. At the same time two other events, however, reveal its controversial image that caused it a severe damage. In recent years, many Bulgarians are seeking the moral dimensions of these phenomena that influence the spirituality and morality of the younger generations.

The Art Of Joseph Edward Southall, Roger Homan Oct 2014

The Art Of Joseph Edward Southall, Roger Homan

Quaker Studies

Joseph Southall (1861-1944) was an artist distinguished in his field, a political activist of considerable stamina and a Quaker greatly loved and honoured by some Friends, albeit not by all. His political involvement as chairman of the Independent Labour Party in Birmingham from 1914 to 1931 afforded an opportunity for witness that was in harmony with his religious affiliation. But his profession as an artist was pursued against a climate of ambivalence toward the arts within the Quaker community, which was diminishing in the early twentieth century but had not altogether disappeared. This paper illustrates the traditional disapprobation of the …

Following The Faith Of The Father; Sayyid 'Uthm N'S Son Ya Y On Mosque Etiquette, E. P. Wieringa

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Dal 'il al-n shid 'an a k m al-wal 'im f -l-mas jid (Arguments of the Seeker for Legal Judgements concerning Festive Meals in Mosques) is a short tract, written in 1938 in Malay in Arabic script by Ya y b. 'Uthm n b. 'AbdAll h, none other than a son of the renowned Batavian muft Sayyid 'Uthm n (1822-1914). Protesting against the (in his view) bid'a (unauthorized religious innovation) () of organizing festive meals in mosques, he felt it his duty to try to stop his co-religionists from doing wrong. Not being a theologian himself, his pamphlet is …

Indonesia, Modernity And Some Problems Of Religious Adaptation, June Mcdaniel Oct 2014

Indonesia, Modernity And Some Problems Of Religious Adaptation, June Mcdaniel

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article discusses the challenges of adaptation for Indonesian religion. It describes the ways that the major Indonesian religions have changed to fit the requirements of being recognized religions, and focuses as an example on the ways that Balinese Hinduism has changed to become Agama Hindu Dharma Indonesia. It also examines the traditional theological problem of "faith and works" in the Indonesian context, and the concerns used to balance modernization and religious freedom.

John Brewin's Tracts: The Written Word, Evangelicalism, And The Quaker Way In Mid Nineteenth Century England, Edwina Newman

Quaker Studies

This study explores seven volumes of tracts collected between 1827 and 1850 by John Brewin, a Cirencester Quaker. This period was a critical one for the Religious Society of Friends, notably in its relationship with Evangelicalism. The collection allows us to test something of the nature and extent of change at grassroots level, by providing an insight into the range of issues that were of interest to provincial English Quakers, the means by which ideas were disseminated, and how they might have been received by readers. The conclusion is that, while Evangelical influence was clearly growing, Quakers remained deeply attached …

Morality And Religion: Complementing Or Complicating Corporate Governance, Abdul Karim Aldohni Oct 2014

Morality And Religion: Complementing Or Complicating Corporate Governance, Abdul Karim Aldohni

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

The moral ethos of any business organisation has always had an impact on the governance of its conduct. In the wake of the financial crisis, there have been increased calls for improving the moral standards of business organisations, especially in the financial sector.

In academic literature, the link between morality and religion has been widely discussed. Therefore, in the context of business governance, the influence of religious values has been the subject of a considerable amount of research. Most research in this respect has primarily focused on the positive impact of religious values on governance. However, a little attention has …

The Mystical Theology Of Chiara Lubich: A Foundation For Interreligious Dialogue In East Asia, Donald W. Mitchell Oct 2014

The Mystical Theology Of Chiara Lubich: A Foundation For Interreligious Dialogue In East Asia, Donald W. Mitchell

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article begins with the assumption that Chiara Lubich received a charism—a spiritual gift—that is embodied in her spirituality of unity. Mitchell argues that the Trinitarian source of this gift was revealed in the mystical experience she refers to as “Paradise ’49,” a period of illumination in Chiara’s life that began in 1949 and extended to 1951. The first part of this paper reflects on the charism of Chiara’s spirituality of unity as lived out in interreligious dialogue. The second part reflects on what has been published about Chiara’s mystical illuminations, which Mitchell believes can serve as new sources for …
