Timeless Growth Principles From The Movement Of Hans Nielsen Hauge: A Case Study In Pietism, David Stein, Frederick Thoni
Timeless Growth Principles From The Movement Of Hans Nielsen Hauge: A Case Study In Pietism, David Stein, Frederick Thoni
Great Commission Research Journal
As existing churches continually face the challenge of staying relevant, and new churches face the challenge of establishing traction in the first place, a fresh look at the dynamics of movements will help both. While large, existing churches can often operate from an institutional focus, new and growing churches have to operate from a movement focus. Declining churches need to recapture the dynamism that helped them come into being in the first place. In order to break free from the status quo a new catalyst must be inserted into the equation in order to move forward to the next level. …
Is The College-Ready Teaching Framework Related To Student Achievement?, Narciso Aguda
Is The College-Ready Teaching Framework Related To Student Achievement?, Narciso Aguda
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examined the College-Ready Teaching Framework (CRTF), a multiple measure teacher effectiveness rubric created by Green Dot Public Schools. The purpose of the dissertation was to determine whether or not the CRTF as a whole or in part could account for differences in student outcomes (California Standards Test [CST] scores, student growth percentile [SGP], and grade point average [GPA]). The study included teachers and students at Green Dot during the 2012-2013 school year. Correlational analyses were used to determine if there was a relationship between student achievement outcomes and the CRTF. Factor analysis was used to discover other Factors …
"What Is Peoria For?": Reading As Spiritual Practice In David Foster Wallace's The Pale King, Jeremy Reed
"What Is Peoria For?": Reading As Spiritual Practice In David Foster Wallace's The Pale King, Jeremy Reed
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Since its publication in 2011, critics have written about David Foster Wallace’s final, unfinished novel, The Pale King, by looking for resonances with his career-long interests of irony, alienation, and the text’s relation to the reader, but few have written of his final fiction as exhibiting a new approach to these topics. To further such criticism, I argue that in The Pale King Wallace uses new means – religious, and specifically mystic, vocabularies of experience – to seek ethical practices for living in a period heavily influenced by Postmodern irony. In the process, Wallace’s characters end up advocating a mystical …
The Trees, My Lungs: Self Psychology And The Natural World At An American Buddhist Center, Daniel S. Capper
The Trees, My Lungs: Self Psychology And The Natural World At An American Buddhist Center, Daniel S. Capper
Faculty Publications
This study employs ethnographic field data to trace a dialogue between the self psychological concept of the selfobject and experiences regarding the concept of “interbeing” at a Vietnamese Buddhist monastery in the United States. The dialogue develops an understanding of human experiences with the nonhuman natural world which are tensive, liminal, and nondual. From the dialogue I find that the selfobject concept, when applied to this form of Buddhism, must be inclusive enough to embrace relationships with animals, stones, and other natural forms. The dialogue further delineates a self psychological methodology for examining religions in their interactions with natural forms.
The New Orleans Murder Epidemic: Emmanuel Levinas And Jacques Derrida On The Irresponsibility Of Violence, Jacqueline Nicole Zimmer
The New Orleans Murder Epidemic: Emmanuel Levinas And Jacques Derrida On The Irresponsibility Of Violence, Jacqueline Nicole Zimmer
LSU Master's Theses
Corruption, unfettered violence, and racist enforcement tactics have historically defined the operations of the New Orleans Police Department, and consequently, many New Orleanians do not expect to be helped or protected by law enforcement or the justice system. The breakdown of society’s civil code explains why many New Orleans citizens have normalized the use of coercive violence to solve interpersonal disputes instead of relying on legitimate policing methods to maintain social order. In the past year, the city of New Orleans has implemented criminologist David Kennedy’s Group Violence Reduction Strategy (GVRS), which aims to decrease the city’s historically high murder …

"Show Me The Face You Had Before Your Parents Were Born" : African-American New Thought Ministers And 'The Black Interior', Kaitlin N. Smith
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical research critically explores the phenomenon of contemporary African Americans seeking to cultivate individual identities that are not bound by the external demands inherent in a black racial identity. It examines the work and ideas of three African-American New thought ministers who articulate a vision of liberation that is predicated on the cultivation of an interior spiritual identity beyond the social world. This research employs two theoretical frameworks that may help to shed light on the reasons for and implications of contemporary African Americans constructing their identities in this manner. The first of these theoretical frameworks is sociologist Eduardo …
Heidegger And Ethics: From Dasein As Being-In-The-World To Dasein As Ethical, Eric Robert Panicco
Heidegger And Ethics: From Dasein As Being-In-The-World To Dasein As Ethical, Eric Robert Panicco
LSU Master's Theses
The thought of Martin Heidegger is considered to make a drastic change from modern philosophical thought which begins with Descartes. The reason for the strong distinction that Heidegger makes between those philosophers and his own thought is a result of the way in which his understanding of the kind of being we have (Dasein) is different from conceptions of the human subject. Because traditional approaches to ethics incorporate this understanding of the human subject, an investigation of ethics from Heidegger’s presentation of Dasein is poised to lend new insights into what it means to be ethical. The point of this …
Heidegger, Metaphor, And The Essence Of Language, Joel Meservy
Heidegger, Metaphor, And The Essence Of Language, Joel Meservy
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis, I address the question of Heidegger’s rejection of metaphor, alleging most of the commentary on this rejection has failed to confront its substance. In particular, I focus on two different interpretations, one given by Paul Ricoeur and the other by Jacques Derrida. Both of these accounts place Heidegger’s rejection in a model of language structured by the sign relation; however, I contend Heidegger rejects metaphor precisely in order to overcome this model of language. Heidegger's few references to metaphor occur within attempts to rethink the very nature of our being-in-the-world and our relationship to language; that is, …
Gateways To The Goddess: Devotion To Kali In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Nicole C. Petersen
Gateways To The Goddess: Devotion To Kali In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Nicole C. Petersen
Departmental Honors Projects
Kali, the dark Hindu goddess of time and fierce Mother of the universe, has a pervasive global presence. This project traces Her from historical roots in India across borders to temples in California. A theoretical synthesis of the experiential approaches of sensory anthropology and Victor Turner's three-part model of ritual processes, the project presents an innovative approach through which to study and articulate devotion to Kali in diverse cultural contexts. Through textual research, interviews and observant participation, I analyze the process whereby devotees separate themselves from the mundane and enter liminal spaces of worship, understood both spatially and temporally. I …

This study represents an analysis of student performance in computer information systems (CIS) courses and the potential influence of Jungian personality traits on academic success in CIS courses. For this study, academic success is measured by grades achieved. The MBTI measurement scale was self-analyzed by students in CIS courses from fall 2008 through spring 2013. The data showed a statistically significant correlation between various personality dichotomies of the type (Extraversion-Introversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and JudgingPerceiving) and higher grades scores. The results of this study indicate that course performance of groups of students are different relative to their personality type. In this …

Each of the five participants was interviewed in order to further elaborate their written narratives. These accounts were …
Where Is Abel Thy Brother? Reframing The Theological Horizons For Catholic Theories Of Just War, Philip J. Rossi
Where Is Abel Thy Brother? Reframing The Theological Horizons For Catholic Theories Of Just War, Philip J. Rossi
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This essay starts from a presupposition that there is need for rethinking the theological framework within which the Catholic Church has articulated its understanding of the principles and the application of the theory of "just war" in the social teaching it has proposed since the conclusion of World War II. While it may also be the case that the articulation of just war principles within other Christian theological traditions needs a similar re-framing, my primary concern is with the place it has occupied within Catholic moral and social teaching for the last sixty years. I will first provide a brief …

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie
Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie
Faculty Publications
Studies have found that Mormons and non-Mormons in Utah exhibit significant linguistic differences. We break this down further by investigating whether there are also differences between Mormons who actively participate in the religion and those who do not, and find significant differences with a medium or larger effect size between the groups for multiple variables. We conclude that when investigating the linguistic correlates of religious affiliation in a community, it is vital to elicit not just respondents’ religious affiliations, but also their level of participation within that religion.
