Student-Centered, Interactive Teaching Of The Anglo-Saxon Cult Of The Cross, Christopher R. Fee Oct 2014

Student-Centered, Interactive Teaching Of The Anglo-Saxon Cult Of The Cross, Christopher R. Fee

English Faculty Publications

Although most Anglo-Saxonists deal with Old English texts and contexts as a matter of course in our research agendas, many of us teach relatively few specialized courses focused on our areas of expertise to highly-trained students; thus, many Old English texts and objects which are commonplace in our research lives can seem arcane and esoteric to a great many of our students. This article proposes to confront this gap, to suggest some ways of teaching a few potentially obscure texts and artifacts to undergrads, to offer some guidance about uses of technology in this endeavor, and to help fellow teachers …

Critical Cultural Awareness: Contributions To A Globalizing Psychology, J. C. Christopher, D. C. Wendt, Jeanne Marecek, D. M. Goodman Oct 2014

Critical Cultural Awareness: Contributions To A Globalizing Psychology, J. C. Christopher, D. C. Wendt, Jeanne Marecek, D. M. Goodman

Psychology Faculty Works

The number of psychologists whose work crosses cultural boundaries is increasing. Without a critical awareness of their own cultural grounding, they risk imposing the assumptions, concepts, practices, and values of U.S.-centered psychology on societies where they do not fit, as a brief example from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami shows. Hermeneutic thinkers offer theoretical resources for gaining cultural awareness. Culture, in the hermeneutic view, is the constellation of meanings that constitutes a way of life. Such cultural meanings-especially in the form of folk psychologies and moral visions-inevitably shape every psychology, including U.S. psychology. The insights of hermeneutics, as well as …

Thinking Maps In Moral Education, Vishalache Balakrishnan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Since the launch of the Blue Print for Education in Malaysia (2013-2025), various transformation strategies have been introduced in the Ministry of Education in Malaysia. Some programmes are local such as upgrading the teaching profession, encouraging the crème of the crème of the younger generation to pursue the teaching profession and others. At a more international level, various teaching methodologies have been imported and introduced to encourage higher order thinking skills (HOTS) among teachers to be taught to students in primary and secondary schools. One of the technique introduced stage by stage and finally nationwide on 1 April 2014 was …

Faculty Senate Newsletter, October 2014, Louisiana State University And Agricultural & Mechanical College

LSU Faculty Senate Publications

Message from President: A prominent leader on a rather large Louisiana university recently opened his monthly letter to the campus community with an announcement, in bold-face type, that all may rejoice in the discovery that incoming students had averaged 25.82 on the ACT entrance examination. That, with two-digit decimal accuracy, while the retirement system sweeps away two-digit full-integer percentages of faculty retirement money and while more than two layers of paint peel away in almost every decaying academic building. Setting aside the obvious problems with the physical and economic conditions under which academic professionals toil, one can only wonder what …

The Early History Of Chance In Evolution, Charles H. Pence Oct 2014

The Early History Of Chance In Evolution, Charles H. Pence

Faculty Publications

Work throughout the history and philosophy of biology frequently employs ‘chance’, ‘unpredictability’, ‘probability’, and many similar terms. One common way of understanding how these concepts were introduced in evolution focuses on two central issues: the first use of statistical methods in evolution (Galton), and the first use of the concept of “objective chance” in evolution (Wright). I argue that while this approach has merit, it fails to fully capture interesting philosophical reflections on the role of chance expounded by two of Galton's students, Karl Pearson and W.F.R. Weldon. Considering a question more familiar from contemporary philosophy of biology—the relationship between …

Die Widerspiegelung Von Abergläubischen Und Religiösen Glaubensvorstellungen Des Islams Anhand Von Beispielen In Emine Sevgi Özdamars Das Leben Ist Eine Karawanserei – Hat Zwei Türen – Aus Einer Kam Ich Rein Aus Der Anderen Ging Ich Raus, Shiva Rahmani Khanghahi

Open Access Theses

In the following work, I deal with the relationship of faith to superstition, and their reflection in German literature based on religious studies in a literary work.

First, there will be an introduction to this work and the topic and then the subject of superstition will be generally treated. After a description of superstition and beliefs is a discussion of their impact on culture and literature, illustrated by means of examples in a literary work of Emine Sevgi Özdamar. In the next chapter based on historical investigation, religion, its origin, its development and role is generally described, whereas the focus …

The Mad Science Of Hip-Hop: History, Technology, And Poetics Of Hip-Hop's Music, 1975-1991, Patrick Rivers Oct 2014

The Mad Science Of Hip-Hop: History, Technology, And Poetics Of Hip-Hop's Music, 1975-1991, Patrick Rivers

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In 1979, the first commercial recordings of hip-hop music were released. The music's transition from the parks and clubs of the Bronx to recorded media resulted in hip-hop music being crafted and mediated in a recording studio before reaching the ears of listeners. In this dissertation I present a comprehensive investigation into the history of the instrumental component of hip-hop music heard on recordings, commonly referred to as beats. My historical narrative is formed by: the practices involved in the creation of hip-hop beats; the technologies that facilitated and defined those practices; and the debates around these two aspects that …

The Salzburger Story And Its Legacy In Rincon, Georgia, Joann Trodahl Oct 2014

The Salzburger Story And Its Legacy In Rincon, Georgia, Joann Trodahl

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

There has been much written about the Protestant Salzburgers, both as religious exiles and as colonists in the New World. Scholarship in this area focuses on the social, political, economic, and religious issues in Europe leading up to the Salzburger expulsion and how these same issues influenced the Salzburgers and how they were perceived by other colonists in Georgia. The information gathered about these events forms the backdrop for understanding the Salzburgers and their importance in Georgia’s history. However, what is missing in the Salzburger narrative is what this legacy means to those descendants living near the site today. Visits …

Palliative Care's Sacramental And Liturgical Foundations: Healthcare Formed By Faith, Hope, And Love, Darren M. Henson Oct 2014

Palliative Care's Sacramental And Liturgical Foundations: Healthcare Formed By Faith, Hope, And Love, Darren M. Henson

Dissertations (1934 -)

Medical history identifies Dame Cicely Saunders as the founder of modern hospice and palliative care for the unique care she gave to the incurably and terminally ill. Less known is how her Christian faith, combined with her knowledge of medicine, influenced her vision. This work retrieves the Christian roots of palliative care and asserts that the practice of faith preserves the practice of medicine from succumbing to medicalized dying--a phenomenon that excessively relies on technology with the implied hope that it will ultimately conquer illnesses and even death. Efficiency and effectiveness ground modern medicine's epistemology. These concepts follow the philosophical …
