Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention For Autism: Is It Actually More "Intensive" Than A Typical Child's Day?, Caitlyn B. Sorensen

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication, and excessive ritualistic and repetitive behavior. Numerous treatments for autism devised over the last half-century have proven ineffective, or have never been scientifically evaluated. Despite the state of the research, the most demonstrably effective treatment, Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI), has been a target of much criticism, including accusations of being too intense. A large number of learning trials in relatively short periods of time supposedly induce children to have disordered stress responses. To explore the intensity of EIBI, behavior samples from children engaging …

A Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of The Use Of Student Growth Measures In Teacher Evaluation And Its Effect On School Culture, Jennifer L. Slanger Jan 2014

A Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of The Use Of Student Growth Measures In Teacher Evaluation And Its Effect On School Culture, Jennifer L. Slanger

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study explored teacher perceptions of the inclusion of student growth data into the teacher evaluation process and the relationship(s) these perceptions might have on school culture. A positive correlation (p <.001) was found between the inclusion of VAM into the teacher evaluation process and motivation to collaborate. Key findings include participants working in priority designated schools were less likely to collaborate; participants with more knowledge about VAM had more positive perceptions; and participants in nonurban schools or smaller schools had more positive perceptions of VAM. Significant main effects for urban location (p = .001), number of teachers (p = .005), and level of knowledge (p = .05) were found. Participants in priority or urban schools indicated they don’t want to collaborate at a higher level than their counterparts in non-priority or nonurban schools. The inclusion of VAM appears to lead participants into isolation, not necessarily competitive relationships.

Theses and Dissertations

Pleas for Partition in Train to Pakistan

Most readers and critics of fictional works about the Partition of British India (that is the division of British India into India and Pakistan upon independence from the British in 1947) agree that writers tend to paint religious differences as the root cause of the communal conflict that eventually led to Partition. This tendency to blame Partition on religion is also found in critics who study Khushwant Singh's novel Train to Pakistan. In contrast, this thesis will demonstrate that instead of blaming communal diversity (in other words "difference of religion") as the root …
