Cognitive Consequences Of Degraded Speech: The Effect Of Background Noise, Noise-Vocoded Speech And Low-Pass Filtering On Short Story Recall, Laura Anne Horowitz Jan 2014

Cognitive Consequences Of Degraded Speech: The Effect Of Background Noise, Noise-Vocoded Speech And Low-Pass Filtering On Short Story Recall, Laura Anne Horowitz

Independent Studies and Capstones

Recall accuracy for speech-degraded short stories was assessed in young adults with normal hearing sensitivity. Stories were presented in the clear, or in noise vocoded, low-pass filtered, or background noise conditions of varying difficulty. Propositional scoring was used to determine the accuracy of participants’ recall. No significant effect on short story recall accuracy was observed for the degraded listening conditions. These results suggest that young adult listeners may be less susceptible to the extra cognitive challenge associated with degraded speech than might be predicted by the effortfulness hypothesis.

Online Geometric Human Interaction Segmentation And Recognition, Harika Bharthavarapu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this work is the temporal localization and recognition of binary people interactions in video. Human-human interaction detection is one of the core problems in video analysis. It has many applications such as in video surveillance, video search and retrieval, human-computer interaction, and behavior analysis for safety and security. Despite the sizeable literature in the area of activity and action modeling and recognition, the vast majority of the approaches make the assumption that the beginning and the end of the video portion containing the action or the activity of interest is known. In other words, while a significant …

L'Intention Mal Comprise : Les Meres Indignes De La Comtesse De Segur, Kristina Kiisk Jan 2014

L'Intention Mal Comprise : Les Meres Indignes De La Comtesse De Segur, Kristina Kiisk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sophie de Segur is a very well-known 19th century French children's author. Her books were and are still widely read and appreciated by children. However, she has been often criticized by literary scholars of the 20th and 21st century due to the fact that there is a lot of violence present in her novels. In addition, it has been suggested that her only goal was to educate and moralize her young readers. This opinion, however, reduces the multifaceted work of the comtesse to a purely didactic literature and we fail to recognize that her writing suggests a much deeper significance …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

While pneumococcal conjugate vaccines have been implemented in most countries worldwide, use in Asia has lagged in part because of a lack of data on the amount of disease that is vaccine preventable in the region. We describe pneumococcal serotypes elicited from 111 episodes of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) from 2005 to 2013 among children and adults in Pakistan. Seventy-three percent (n = 81) of 111 IPD episodes were cases of meningitis (n = 76 in children 0-15 years and n = 5 among adults). Serotypes were determined by target amplification of DNA extracted from pneumococcal isolates (n = 52) …

Students’ Perspectives On The Use Of Peer Feedback In An English As A Second Language Writing Class, Kavitha Sukumaran, Rozita Dass

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Peer assessment and peer feedback are considered alternatives to teacher-based feedback and their effects on writing have been substantially researched. This study aims to examine the perspectives of a group of university students, who are mainly second language learners, on peer feedback in an English writing class. Many of the studies conducted on the perspectives of students regarding peer feedback provided conflicting findings. While some found that peer feedback was viewed with doubt and encouraged little revision, others found it helped learners to recognise their strengths and flaws in writing. This study aims to better understand students’ perspectives regarding peer …

“Keeping It Together, Keeping Their Heads Above Water”: Western Australian Child Health Nurses’ Understanding Of Resilience In Postpartum Mothers, Rachael O. Collins, Julie Ann Pooley, Myra F. Taylor Jan 2014

“Keeping It Together, Keeping Their Heads Above Water”: Western Australian Child Health Nurses’ Understanding Of Resilience In Postpartum Mothers, Rachael O. Collins, Julie Ann Pooley, Myra F. Taylor

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Assessing the well-being of postpartum mothers is an important aspect of postnatal nursing care. For this reason, Child Health Nurses (CHNs) are charged with the responsibility of identifying postpartum mothers who do/not manifest resilient behavioral qualities. However, little is known about CHNs’ conceptualization of resilience or how they assess resilience in postpartum mothers. This exemplar study addressed this knowledge shortfall by conducting semi-structured interviews with eight practicing CHNs. The study’s findings reveal that although CHNs’ conceptual understanding of resilience is congruent with current theoretical thinking, some variance does exist in the ways in which CHNs assess postpartum resilience, particularly, in …

Traditional Chinese Medicine And New Concepts Of Predictive, Preventive And Personalized Medicine In Diagnosis And Treatment Of Suboptimal Health, Wei Wang, Alyce C. Russell, Yuxiang Yan

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The premise of disease-related phenotypes is the definition of the counterpart normality in medical sciences. Contrary to clinical practices that can be carefully planned according to clinical needs, heterogeneity and uncontrollability is the essence of humans in carrying out health studies. Full characterization of consistent phenotypes that define the general population is the basis to individual difference normalization in personalized medicine. Self-claimed normal status may not represent health because asymptomatic subjects may carry chronic diseases at their early stage, such as cancer, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Currently, treatments for non-communicable chronic diseases (NCD) are implemented after disease onset, which is …
