Family Caregivers’ Knowledge Of Delirium And Preferred Modalities For Receipt Of Information, Margaret J. Bull, Lesley Boaz, Jennifer M. Sjostedt Jan 2014

Family Caregivers’ Knowledge Of Delirium And Preferred Modalities For Receipt Of Information, Margaret J. Bull, Lesley Boaz, Jennifer M. Sjostedt

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Delirium is a life-threatening, frequently reversible condition that is often a sign of an underlying health problem. In-hospital mortality alone for older adults with delirium ranges from 25% to 33%. Early recognition of delirium is critical because prolonged duration poses a greater risk of poor functional outcomes for older adults. Family caregivers, who are familiar with the older adult’s usual behaviors, are most likely to recognize delirium symptoms but might dismiss them as due to aging. It is important to learn what family caregivers know about delirium to ascertain their need for education. The aims of this study were to …

Valorisation Of The Cider And Brewing Industry By-Products As Nutraceutical Ingredients, Sofia Reis Jan 2014

Valorisation Of The Cider And Brewing Industry By-Products As Nutraceutical Ingredients, Sofia Reis

Doctoral

By-products from the cider and brewing industries, including apple pomace (AP) and brewer’s spent grain (BSG) respectively, constitute major environmental problems due to the large quantities produced every year. They are sources of valuable compounds such as protein, fibre, essential fatty acids, phenolic compounds and minerals, some of them with antioxidant and prebiotic properties. Their high nutritional value leads to their potential use as human food products and several applications have been considered recently. The aims of this work include i) the nutritional and compositional characterisation of AP, BSG and final extruded and baked prototypes containing these by-products and ii) …

A Tale Of Two Rights, Robin West Jan 2014

A Tale Of Two Rights, Robin West

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In part I of this article the author identifies and criticizes a cluster of constitutional rights, which she argues does tremendous and generally unreckoned harm to civil society, and does so for reasons poorly articulated in earlier critiques. At the heart of the new paradigm of constitutional rights that the author believes these rights exemplify is a “right to exit.” On this conception of individual rights, a constitutional right is a right to “opt out” of some central public or civic project. This understanding of what it means to have a constitutional right hit the scene a good two decades …

Household Regulation And European Integration: The Family Portrait Of A Crisis, Philomila Tsoukala Jan 2014

Household Regulation And European Integration: The Family Portrait Of A Crisis, Philomila Tsoukala

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article develops a theoretical framework for analyzing the regulation of the household and its effects on the economy. Incorporating insights from family economics, comparative family law, legal realism, political economy and feminism, it describes the array of different legal regimes that can affect household composition and function. The article then analyzes the case of Greece using this framework. It argues that the role of households organized as families was a central element in the Greek debt crisis, overlooked by scholars and policymakers alike. It identifies the host of legal regimes that helped consolidate families as the main providers of …

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

This literature review examined nine quantitative research studies published between 1992-2013 that compared children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to identify: (a) the differences between these children (e.g., intellectual, behavioral); and (b) the diagnostic tools that may be used to distinguish between them, thereby providing a differential diagnosis. Special focus was placed on rural treatment implications. These studies revealed differences between the intellectual, executive functioning, adaptive behavior, motor, and behavioral skills of children with FASD and ADHD. This review identified neurodevelopmental assessments used in these nine research studies that appear to support learning …

Speleomycological Research In Underground Osówka Complex In Sowie Mountains (Lower Silesia, Poland), Wojciech Pusz, Rafał Ogórek, Cecylia Miłowana Uklańska-Pusz, Paweł Zagożdżon

International Journal of Speleology

Osówka (Germ. Säuferhöhen), is one of the elements of the unfinished Nazi military complex called “Riese”. The total length of corridors of Osówka complex is about 1,700 m and its capacity amounts to 30,000 m3. As described geologically, Osówka is situated within the Sowie Mts. Massif which consists mostly of various gneisses with different structural characteristics, but with a constant mineral composition. The rock-forming minerals are feldspar (oligoclase), quartz, biotite and light micas, accesory minerals are garnet, sillimanite and dysten. Fine-grained shallow-sea deposits were probably a protolith of these rocks. The study aimed at first mycological evaluation of …

Orthothermographies And 3d Modeling As Potential Tools In Ice Caves Studies: The Peña Castil Ice Cave (Picos De Europa, Northern Spain), Fernando Berenguer-Sempere, Manuel Gómez-Lende, Enrique Seranno, José Juan De Sanjosé-Blasco Jan 2014

Orthothermographies And 3d Modeling As Potential Tools In Ice Caves Studies: The Peña Castil Ice Cave (Picos De Europa, Northern Spain), Fernando Berenguer-Sempere, Manuel Gómez-Lende, Enrique Seranno, José Juan De Sanjosé-Blasco

International Journal of Speleology

Currently there are many studies focused on the investigation of climatic and glaciological condition of ice caves. Here we present another way to address these studies, applying some methods already used in fields other than geomorphology. The versatility and accuracy provided by the use of modern topography and thermography techniques, using Terrestrial Laser Scanner and current thermographic cameras- and the creation of 3D thermographic models and orthothermographies derived from them - is shown to be a useful tool as it is difficult to obtain data from fieldwork and traditional methods used in caves. This paper presents the potential uses of …

Identification And Ss-Lactam Resistance In Aquatic Isolates Of Enterobacter Cloacae And Their Status In Microbiota Of Domica Cave In Slovak Karst (Slovakia), Barbora Gaalova, Alena Donauerova, Milan Seman, Helena Bujdakova Jan 2014

Identification And Ss-Lactam Resistance In Aquatic Isolates Of Enterobacter Cloacae And Their Status In Microbiota Of Domica Cave In Slovak Karst (Slovakia), Barbora Gaalova, Alena Donauerova, Milan Seman, Helena Bujdakova

International Journal of Speleology

Domica Cave is located in the Slovak Karst National Park in southern Slovakia. Heterotrophic cultivable psychrophilic and mesophilic microbiota were confirmed to be prevalent in this cave. Escherichia coli was the most abundant bacterium, followed by Enterobacter species and Serrratia species. Enterobacter cloacae isolates belong to the group of faecal contaminants (coliforms) of concern in water. Their status in cave ecosystem is questionable, but we observed E. cloacae in water samples all years round suggesting an autochthonous origin. We were concerned with possible contamination of the cave water with resistant E. cloacae from animal farms located 2-3 km from the …

Study Of Filled Dolines By Using 3d Stereo Image Processing And Electrical Resistivity Imaging, Mateja Breg Valjavec Jan 2014

Study Of Filled Dolines By Using 3d Stereo Image Processing And Electrical Resistivity Imaging, Mateja Breg Valjavec

International Journal of Speleology

This article deals with doline degradation due to uncontrolled waste dumping in the past in the Logatec Polje in Slovenia. It introduces a concept for determining 3D geometric characteristics (shape, depth, radius, area, and volume) of formerly concave landforms (i.e., recently filled dolines) by using a combination of two methods: (1) photogrammetric stereo processing of archival aerial photographs and (2) electrical resistivity imaging (ERI). To represent, visualize, and study the characteristics of the former surface morphology (i.e., the dolines before they were filled), a digital terrain model (DTM) for 1972 (DTM1972) was made using digital photogrammetry processing of five sequential …

Octonion Symmetric Dirac-Maxwell Equations, Bhupesh Chandra Chanyal Jan 2014

Octonion Symmetric Dirac-Maxwell Equations, Bhupesh Chandra Chanyal

Turkish Journal of Physics

We know that the octonion algebra is the largest division algebra. Therefore, we have discussed the octonion 8-dimensional space as the combination of 2 (external and internal) 4-dimensional spaces. The octonion wave equations in terms of 8 components has been written in terms of an 8 x 8 matrix. Octonion forms of potential as well as fields equations of dyons in terms of an 8 x 8 matrix are discussed in a consistent manner. At last, we have obtained the generalized Dirac-Maxwell equations of dyons in two 4-dimensional spaces, from the 8 x 8 matrix representation of octonion wave equations. …

Zno-Based Nanostructures For Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor, Millaty Mustaqima, Chunli Liu Jan 2014

Zno-Based Nanostructures For Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor, Millaty Mustaqima, Chunli Liu

Turkish Journal of Physics

Since the prediction by Dietl et al. in the year 2000, extensive research activities have been focused on the ZnO-based diluted magnetic materials (DMSs). Earlier works were mainly performed using bulk or thin film materials with transition-metal doping, and diverse magnetic properties including ferromagnetism, paramagnetism, and diamagnetism have been reported. Identifying the dominant mechanism of the ferromagnetic ordering and realizing reproducible ferromagnetism above room temperature have been the main research issues, but a consensus is still lacking even today. Recently, reports on ZnO nanostructures with ferromagnetic behavior have been growing due to the novel properties brought about by the high …

We will discuss each of these topics in turn, while also reviewing the most scaled Ge field-effect-transistor devices, and consider how modelling activities have matured for Ge in recent years.

Promoting Critical Reflexivity Through Arts-Based Media: A Case Study, Christopher Trevelyan, Rory Crath, Adrienne Chambon Jan 2014

Promoting Critical Reflexivity Through Arts-Based Media: A Case Study, Christopher Trevelyan, Rory Crath, Adrienne Chambon

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

As an increasingly central focus of social work pedagogy, critical reflexivity can be distinguished from non-critical forms of reflexivity by its emphasis on the socially constructed, power-laden nature of knowledge and subjectivity, and its embracement of anxiety and other difficult emotions in social work practice. Given the in actu nature of its processes, however, critical reflexivity poses particular challenges as a teaching objective for social work educators. In order to assess the potential of arts-based media to engender critical forms of reflexivity in social work audiences, qualitative inquiry was conducted on social workers' experience of an arts-based video installation on …
