Cavitation Inception And Contaminant Effects, Jennifer Marie Jordahl Jan 2014

Cavitation Inception And Contaminant Effects, Jennifer Marie Jordahl

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

Within a liquid, it is possible to lower the pressure to a point in which the nuclei gas bubbles will cause cavitation inception. During this drop in pressure, at constant temperature, the bubble tension will increase to the inception pressure. The difference between vapor pressure and the pressure where inception occurs is the tensile strength of the liquid. Frankel introduced the calculation of the potential tensile strength of a liquid. Studies show a drastic difference in the calculated potential tensile strength of a liquid and the tensile strength obtained through experimentation. Environmental effects or contaminants affect cavitation inception. Studying the …

The Dynamics Of Viscous Droplets Near Micro-Patterned Solid Surfaces In Creeping Flow, Kevin Michael Beussman Jan 2014

The Dynamics Of Viscous Droplets Near Micro-Patterned Solid Surfaces In Creeping Flow, Kevin Michael Beussman

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

The interaction between droplets and solid surfaces is of great importance in industrial applications, biochemical processes, and fundamental materials research on surface wettability. In this work, a three-dimensional spectral boundary element method has been employed to investigate the dynamics of a viscous droplet moving under gravity influence normal and parallel to a micro-patterned solid surface. The dynamics of the droplet moving perpendicular to the substrate are investigated under the influence of Bond number, droplet size, and topological features of the substrate. We find that the droplet dynamics can be controlled by varying Bond number, droplet size, and pattern height and …

Gene Expression And Evolution In Escherichia Coli Biofilm, Priyankar Samanta Jan 2014

Gene Expression And Evolution In Escherichia Coli Biofilm, Priyankar Samanta

Microbiological Sciences

Biofilms can be defined as a complex aggregation of bacterial communities that involves many gene regulatory mechanisms, as well as evolutionary processes to increase biodiversity. Specific Aim 1 used a gene regulation approach to identity novel targets for the development of biofilm prevention and treatment techniques. The goal was to determine genes that get expressed early in biofilm development (prevention targets) and genes that get expressed late and in the outer layer of the biofilm (treatment targets). Biofilm formation is regulated by numerous regulators, including the two-component osmoregulator system EnvZ/OmpR, the colanic acid activator rcsCDB and the global regulator FlhD/FlhC. …

Characterization Of A Novel Cryptosporidium Genotype In Red-Winged Black Birds, Jeba Rose Jennifer Jesudoss Chelladurai Jan 2014

Characterization Of A Novel Cryptosporidium Genotype In Red-Winged Black Birds, Jeba Rose Jennifer Jesudoss Chelladurai

Microbiological Sciences

Cryptosporidium species cause cryptosporidiosis, characterized by acute gastroenteritis in humans and animals worldwide. Knowledge of the diversity of Cryptosporidium among mammals and birds is incomplete, especially in North American passerines. In this first molecular study of Cryptosporidium in a North American passerine, C. parvum and a novel genotype, called the red-winged black bird genotype were isolated. Genetic characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of the red-winged black bird genotype were described at the 18S rRNA, actin and HSP70 loci, and it was distinct from previously described species and genotypes. The novelty of this genotype was also supported by propagation studies in chickens, …

Using Imputed Microrna Regulation Based On Weighted Ranked Expression And Putative Microrna Targets And Analysis Of Variance To Select Micrornas For Predicting Prostate Cancer Recurrence, Qi Wang Jan 2014

Using Imputed Microrna Regulation Based On Weighted Ranked Expression And Putative Microrna Targets And Analysis Of Variance To Select Micrornas For Predicting Prostate Cancer Recurrence, Qi Wang

Statistics

Imputed microRNA regulation based on weighted ranked expression and putative microRNA targets (IMRE) is a method to predict microRNA regulation from genome-wide gene expression. A false discovery rate (FDR) for each microRNA is calculated using the expression of the microRNA putative targets to analyze the regulation between different conditions. FDR is calculated to identify the differences of gene expression. The dataset used in this research is the microarray gene expression of 596 patients with prostate cancer. This dataset includes three different phenotypes: PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen recurrence), Systemic (Systemic Disease Progression) and NED (No Evidence of Disease). We used the IMRE …

Distilling Americans: The Legacy Of Prohibition On U.S. Immigration Law, Jayesh Rathod Jan 2014

Distilling Americans: The Legacy Of Prohibition On U.S. Immigration Law, Jayesh Rathod

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Since the early twentieth century, federal immigration law has targeted noncitizens believed to engage in excessive alcohol consumption by prohibiting their entry or limiting their ability to obtain citizenship and other benefits. The first specific mention of alcohol-related behavior appeared in the Immigration Act of 1917, which called for the exclusion of "persons with chronic alcoholism" seeking to enter the United States. Several decades later, the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 specified that any noncitizen who "is or was ... a habitual drunkard" was per se lacking in good moral character, and hence ineligible for naturalization. Although the "chronic …

Access To Health Care As An Incentive For Healthy Behavior, Lindsay Wiley Jan 2014

Access To Health Care As An Incentive For Healthy Behavior, Lindsay Wiley

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Hundreds of thousands of lives have been saved by vehicle safety standards. For many years, the auto industry fought the adoption of even the most basic standards tooth and nail, arguing that driver responsibility was the key to preventing auto accidents. In doing so, vehicle manufacturers "reinforceled] certain common sense ideas about traffic safety"-that drivers were responsible for car accidents and that vehicle design could not do much to make serious crashes survivable-"and suppressled] others." Auto insurers-who bear much of the economic cost of car crashes through a combination of first party and liability insurance-initially joined auto manufacturers in pushing …

Foreword, The Future Of International Criminal Justice, Claudio Grossman Jan 2014

Foreword, The Future Of International Criminal Justice, Claudio Grossman

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

International criminal law attempts to sanction crimes that have a global nature and impact. After World War II, the international community came together to begin addressing important international issues, including preventing future war and non-war related atrocities and crimes. From the International Military Tribunals established in the wake of World War II to the world's first permanent International Criminal Court (ICC), a number of international bodies, treaties, and statutes have been formed in an effort to effectively administer criminal justice on an international level. Yet the administration and application of international criminal justice has faced significant hurdles and there are …

Non-Party Interests In Closing Opinion Letters, Heather Hughes Jan 2014

Non-Party Interests In Closing Opinion Letters, Heather Hughes

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: What do transactional lawyers do when they issue third-party opinion letters in financial transactions? This descriptive question turns out to be quite complex'-so complex that the normative question of what lawyers should do when they issue opinions, as well as the practical question of what they could do, are difficult to answer. This Symposium Article reflects upon third-party closing opinions as a central aspect of business law practice that can be opaque to outsiders. The ideas expressed here are exploratory. In the spirit of reflecting on what transactional lawyers do, this contribution considers deal lawyer strategies as potential tools …

Suicide Bombers In Iraq, 2003-2010: Disaggregating Targets Can Reveal Insurgent Motives And Priorities, Katherine R. Seifert, Clark R. Mccauley Jan 2014

Suicide Bombers In Iraq, 2003-2010: Disaggregating Targets Can Reveal Insurgent Motives And Priorities, Katherine R. Seifert, Clark R. Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Extending data reported by Hafez in 2007, we compiled a database of 1,779 suicide bombers who attempted or completed attacks in Iraq from 2003 through 2010. From 2003 through 2006, monthly totals of suicide bombers show a pattern different from the pattern of non-suicide attacks by insurgents, but from 2007 through 2010 the two patterns were similar. This biphasic pattern tests the common assumption that suicide attacks require separate analysis: it appears that suicide attacks sometimes vary along with the general volume of insurgent violence. We also show that only 13 percent of suicide bombers targeted coalition forces and international …

Civil Consequences Of Corruption In International Commercial Contracts, Padideh Ala'i Jan 2014

Civil Consequences Of Corruption In International Commercial Contracts, Padideh Ala'i

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The United States legal system seeks to prevent and prohibit bribery and corruption through a myriad of laws, regulations and policies. Anti-corruption jurisprudence is more developed in the context of public sector contracts where the United States criminalizes bribery of public officials through 18 U.S.C. §201 (Bribery of Public Officials and Witnesses). In addition, the United States was the first country to criminalize bribery of foreign government officials in 1977 with the passage of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The FCPA has since been amended to comply with the adoption of the OECD Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign …

Conceptions Of Agency In Social Movement Scholarship: Mack On African American Civil Rights Lawyers [Comments], Susan Carle

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This essay examines the theory of individual agency that propels the central thesis in Kenneth Mack's Representing the Race: The Creation of the Civil Rights Lawyer (2012)-namely, that an important yet understudied means by which African American civil rights lawyers changed conceptions of race through their work was through their very performance of the professional role of lawyer. Mack shows that this performance was inevitably fraught with tension and contradiction because African American lawyers were called upon to act both as exemplary representatives of their race and as performers of a professional role that traditionally had been reserved for whites …

Robust Calibration Of Cameras With Telephoto Lens Using Regularized Least Squares, Mingpei Liang, Xinyu Huang, Chung-Hao Chen, Gaolin Zheng, Alade Tokuta

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Cameras with telephoto lens are usually used to recover details of an object that is either small or located far away from the cameras. However, the calibration of this kind of cameras is not as accurate as the one of cameras with short focal lengths that are commonly used in many vision applications. This paper has two contributions. First, we present a first-order error analysis that shows the relation between focal length and estimation uncertainties of camera parameters. To our knowledge, this error analysis with respect to focal length has not been studied in the area of camera calibration. Second, …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Although brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can be used in several different ways to restore communication, communicative BCI has not approached the rate or efficiency of natural human speech. Electrocorticography (ECoG) has precise spatiotemporal resolution that enables recording of brain activity distributed over a wide area of cortex, such as during speech production. In this study, we investigated words that span the entire set of phonemes in the General American accent using ECoG with 4 subjects. We classified phonemes with up to 36% accuracy when classifying all phonemes and up to 63% accuracy for a single phoneme. Further, misclassified phonemes follow articulation …

Identifiability Of Additive Actuator And Sensor Faults By State Augmentation, Suresh M. Joshi, Oscar R. Gonzalez, Jason M. Upchurch

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A class of FDI (fault detection and identification) methods for bias-type actuator and sensor faults was explored from the point of view of fault identifiability. The methods use banks of Kalman-Bucy filters (KBFs) to detect faults, determine the fault pattern, and estimate the fault values. A complete characterization of conditions for identifiability of bias-type actuator faults, sensor faults, and simultaneous actuator and sensor faults was presented. It was shown that FDI of simultaneous actuator and sensor faults is not possible using these methods when all sensors have unknown biases. The fault identifiability conditions were demonstrated via numerical examples. The analytical …

Action Research, Assessment, And Institutional Review Boards (Irb): Conflicting Demands Or Productive Tension For The Academic Librarian?, Robert Farrell Jan 2014

Action Research, Assessment, And Institutional Review Boards (Irb): Conflicting Demands Or Productive Tension For The Academic Librarian?, Robert Farrell

Publications and Research

This article puts forward an “assessment/action research/publication” cycle that integrates aspects of the assessment, research, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes to provide academic librarians with a systematic approach for balancing competing workplace demands and give library managers a roadmap for creating a “research culture” (Jacobs, Berg, and Cornwall) within their libraries. The article argues that librarians and library managers have much to gain by integrating action research into librarians’ everyday work loads, including increased ease in meeting publication demands for tenure and/or promotion, institutionalizing habits of reflective practice across all library service areas, and overall library improvement.

Health Law As Social Justice, Lindsay Wiley Jan 2014

Health Law As Social Justice, Lindsay Wiley

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Health law is in the midst of a dramatic transformation. From a relatively narrow discipline focused on regulating relationships among individual patients, health care providers, and third-party payers, it is expanding into a far broader field with a burgeoning commitment to access to health care and assurance of healthy living conditions as matters of social justice. Through a series of incremental reform efforts stretching back decades before the Affordable Care Act and encompassing public health law as well as the law of health care financing and delivery, reducing health disparities has become a central focus of American health law and …

Exploitation Creep And The Unmaking Of Human Trafficking Law, Janie Chuang Jan 2014

Exploitation Creep And The Unmaking Of Human Trafficking Law, Janie Chuang

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The U.S. government and influential NGOs have been promoting a greatly expanded legal and policy understanding of the problem of human trafficking, recasting forced labor as trafficking, and trafficking as "modern-day slavery." The aggregate effect is a doctrinally problematic "exploitation creep." For strong legal and policy reasons, anti-trafficking efforts should target struc- tural vulnerability to trafficking through strengthened labor frameworks. On the same grounds the article contests initiatives to conflate human trafficking with slavery and to address trafficking primarily under an ex post crime-control par- adigm focused on perpetrator accountability and victim protection.

Problems Faced By Mexican Asylum Seekers In The United States, Anna Cabot Jan 2014

Problems Faced By Mexican Asylum Seekers In The United States, Anna Cabot

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Violence in Mexico rose sharply in response to President Felipe Calder6n's military campaign against drug cartels which began in late 2006. As a consequence, the number of Mexicans who have sought asylum in the United States has grown significantly. In 2013, Mexicans made up the second largest group of defensive asylum seekers (those in removal proceedings) in the United States, behind only China (EOIR 2014b). Yet between 2008 and 2013, the grant rate for Mexican asylum seekers in immigration court fell from 23 percent to nine percent (EOIR 2013, 2014b). This paper examines-from the perspective of an attorney who represented …
