Religiosity In Constitutions And The Status Of Minority Rights, Brandy G. Robinson

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Minority rights and religion have never been topics that are simultaneously considered. However, arguably, the two have relevance, especially when combined with the topic and theory of constitutionalism. Historically and traditionally, minorities have been granted certain rights and have been denied certain rights under various constitutions. These grants and denials relate to cultural differences and values, arguably relating to a culture’s understanding and interpretation of religion.

This article explores the relationship and status of minority rights as it relates to religiosity and constitutionalism. Essentially, there is a correlation between these topics and research shows where certain nations have used religion …

Immigrant Social-Economic Landscape Changes And Ethno-Racial Border Formation In Columbus, Ohio, David M. Walker Dr., Jack Schemenauer

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

In this study we analyze new immigrant gateways in the U.S. and the role African and Latino immigrants play in reinventing urban spaces while culturally and economically regenerating neighborhoods juxtaposed to orthodox city planning practices. Through this research we aim to further understand how urban space is produced at divergent scales in the era of heightened globalization. Through this understanding we analyze how the contestation over how urban space is used and consumed leads to distinctive forms in the production of urban space and the subsequent unintended formation of newly perceived cultural borders, often based upon race and ethnicity. Through …

Left Ventricular Assist Device As Destination Therapy, Maya Guglin, Leslie W. Miller Dec 2014

Left Ventricular Assist Device As Destination Therapy, Maya Guglin, Leslie W. Miller

The VAD Journal

Mechanical circulatory support is the most rapidly evolving strategy in heart failure management. The growing number of patients who need better results than medical therapy can offer, the limited pool of donors for cardiac transplantation, and several technological breakthroughs have all made the option of implanting a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) as destination therapy more important.

In this review, we outline the indications and decision making process of considering a patient for a destination therapy LVAD, as well as outcomes, complications, and issues related to management of patients on currently approved devices. The future direction of the field will …

Conventional Latex/Nanolatex Blends, Frank N. Jones, Ravi G. Joshi, Theodore Provder Dec 2014

Conventional Latex/Nanolatex Blends, Frank N. Jones, Ravi G. Joshi, Theodore Provder

Patents

Nanolatexes comprising functional monomers and methods for making nanolatexes. Compositions comprising between about 3:97 and 90:10 (w/w) nanolatex particles to conventional latex particles. Because of the particle size differences between the conventional and nanolatexes, the nanolatexes may distribute themselves advantageously amongst the conventional latexes during coalescence, resulting in films having unexpected properties. In particular, when the average particle size of the conventional latex is about six times larger than the average particle size of the nanolatex, a composition comprising a ratio of 1 conventional latex particle for every 25 nanolatex particles results in unexpectedly strong (large Young's modulus) and smooth …

Telescopic Nanotube Device For Hot Nanolithography, Adrian Popescu, Lilia M. Woods Dec 2014

Telescopic Nanotube Device For Hot Nanolithography, Adrian Popescu, Lilia M. Woods

USF Patents

A device for maintaining a constant tip-surface distance for producing nanolithography patterns on a surface using a telescopic nanotube for hot nanolithography. An outer nanotube is attached to an AFM cantilever opposite a support end. An inner nanotube is telescopically disposed within the outer nanotube. The tip of the inner nanotube is heated to a sufficiently high temperature and brought in the vicinity of the surface. Heat is transmitted to the surface for thermal imprinting. Because the inner tube moves telescopically along the outer nanotube axis, a tip-surface distance is maintained constant due to the vdW force interaction, which in …

Combination Of Insulin And Ascorbate To Enhance Wound Healing, Kurt Musselmann, John R. Hassell, Brad Kane, Bridgette Alexandrou Dec 2014

Combination Of Insulin And Ascorbate To Enhance Wound Healing, Kurt Musselmann, John R. Hassell, Brad Kane, Bridgette Alexandrou

USF Patents

Provided is a method of stimulating collagen synthesis and proteoglycan (lumican and keratocan) accumulation. Collagenase isolated keratocytes were cultured with or without insulin with or without ascorbate. Insulin stimulates the synthesis of collagen but does not affect the accumulation of lumican and keratocan. Insulin plus ascorbate, however, stimulates the synthesis of collagen and increased the accumulation of these proteoglycans. The accumulation of PGDS, a KSPG that does not interact with collagen, is not affected by ascorbate. Only the collagen made in the presence of ascorbate was pepsin resistant. EDB overrode the effects of ascorbate on pepsin resistance and proteoglycan accumulation.

Prevalence Of Anaemia Amongst Non-Pregnant Women In Sri Lanka: Statistical Analyses., Lakshmi Udeshika Ranwala

Journal of Innovation in Science, Engineering and Technology

Haemoglobin is an iron containing protein that transports oxygen throughout the body. When haemoglobin level is reduced below a cut-off point is called anaemia. Sri Lanka Demographic and Health Survey (SLDHS) was conducted in 2006/07 to monitor the prevalence of anaemia among children and non-pregnant women in Sri Lanka. Although the department of Census and Statistics published the descriptive analysis, multiple regression analysis was not carried out. Non-pregnant women with haemoglobin level less than 11mg/dl is categorized as anaemic condition. Overall prevalence of anaemia among non-pregnant women is 40.9% , which were at public health problem level. High inter-district disparity …

Evolutionary Genomics And Adaptive Evolution Of The Hedgehog Gene Family (Shh, Ihh And Dhh) In Vertebrates, Joana Pereira, Warren E. Johnson, Stephen J. O'Brien, Erich D. Jarvis, Guojie Zhang, M. Thomas P. Gilbert, Vitor Vasconcelos, Agostinho Antunes Dec 2014

Evolutionary Genomics And Adaptive Evolution Of The Hedgehog Gene Family (Shh, Ihh And Dhh) In Vertebrates, Joana Pereira, Warren E. Johnson, Stephen J. O'Brien, Erich D. Jarvis, Guojie Zhang, M. Thomas P. Gilbert, Vitor Vasconcelos, Agostinho Antunes

Biology Faculty Articles

The Hedgehog (Hh) gene family codes for a class of secreted proteins composed of two active domains that act as signalling molecules during embryo development, namely for the development of the nervous and skeletal systems and the formation of the testis cord. While only one Hh gene is found typically in invertebrate genomes, most vertebrates species have three (Sonic hedgehog – Shh; Indian hedgehog – Ihh; and Desert hedgehog – Dhh), each with different expression patterns and functions, which likely helped promote the increasing complexity of vertebrates and their successful diversification. In this study, we …
