Family Accommodation In Adults With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Psychometric Properties Of The Family Accommodation Scale - Patient Version, Monica S. Wu Oct 2014

Family Accommodation In Adults With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Psychometric Properties Of The Family Accommodation Scale - Patient Version, Monica S. Wu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Family accommodation is a salient construct within the context of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and occurs in a large majority of affected individuals and their families. Accommodating behaviors can manifest in various ways, including participation in the patient's rituals, modifying everyday routines, facilitating compulsive behaviors, or providing reassurance. It has been repeatedly linked to negative outcomes, such as attenuated treatment response, increased obsessive-compulsive symptom severity, higher levels of family distress, and lower levels of functioning. As such, it is of significant clinical importance to have a standardized measure that is able to be used in research and clinical practice.

Workplace Surveillance, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Workplace Surveillance, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Employers have long devised techniques and used new technologies to surveil employees in order to increase efficiency, decrease theft, and otherwise assert power and control over subordinates. New and cheaper networked technologies make surveillance easier to implement, but what are the ramifications of widespread workplace surveillance?

Networked Employment Discrimination, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Networked Employment Discrimination, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Employers often struggle to assess qualified applicants, particularly in contexts where they receive hundreds of applications for job openings. In an effort to increase efficiency and improve the process, many have begun employing new tools to sift through these applications, looking for signals that a candidate is “the best fit.” Some companies use tools that offer algorithmic assessments of workforce data to identify the variables that lead to stronger employee performance, or to high employee attrition rates, while others turn to third party ranking services to identify the top applicants in a labor pool. Still others eschew automated systems, but …

The Everyday As Involved In War, Tammy M. Proctor Oct 2014

The Everyday As Involved In War, Tammy M. Proctor

History Faculty Publications

This essay examines how the "everyday" functions in war, not only for those on the home fronts, but for those in combat roles and for those living between the lines. Five important qualities, among others, shape the everyday in World War I: Waiting, Staying Connected, Food and Shelter, Managing Fear, and Camaraderie. Each of these themes plays out at the homes of those left behind, in the camps of civilian and military prisoners, in occupied zones, and at the fronts.

Third Wave Feminism And Emerging Adult Sexuality: Friends With Benefits Relationships, Jean Williams, Jasna Jovanovic Oct 2014

Third Wave Feminism And Emerging Adult Sexuality: Friends With Benefits Relationships, Jean Williams, Jasna Jovanovic

Political Science

Using U.S. third wave feminism as the cultural backdrop, this study examines emerging adults’ participation in heterosexual “friends with benefits” (FWB) relationships. We investigate both the role of gender and feminism in FWB relationships at a United States college, and ask whether identification with feminist ideology impacts students’ motivations and assessments of their relationships. Through the use of an anonymous survey, our research explores whether and how young women and men engage in FWB relationships, the degree to which they find such relationships fulfilling, and the presence of social stigma or acceptance related to this sexual behavior. While we find …

Mirror Reversal And Visual Rotation Are Learned And Consolidated Via Separate Mechanisms: Recalibrating Or Learning De Novo?, Sebastian Telgen, Darius Parvin, Jörn Diedrichsen Oct 2014

Mirror Reversal And Visual Rotation Are Learned And Consolidated Via Separate Mechanisms: Recalibrating Or Learning De Novo?, Sebastian Telgen, Darius Parvin, Jörn Diedrichsen

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Motor learning tasks are often classified into adaptation tasks, which involve the recalibration of an existing control policy (the mapping that determines both feedforward and feedback commands), and skill-learning tasks, requiring the acquisition of new control policies. We show here that this distinction also applies to two different visuomotor transformations during reaching in humans: Mirror-reversal (left-right reversal over a mid-sagittal axis) of visual feedback versus rotation of visual feedback around the movement origin. During mirror-reversal learning, correct movement initiation (feedforward commands) and online corrections (feedback responses) were only generated at longer latencies. The earliest responses were directed into a nonmirrored …

Degrees And Dollars: An Analysis Of Student Perception On Messages Influencing College Matriculation, Erna Bass Oct 2014

Degrees And Dollars: An Analysis Of Student Perception On Messages Influencing College Matriculation, Erna Bass

Student Theses and Dissertations

With the steady increase of college tuition since the early 1990's and a lessened availability of grants and scholarships, debt from student loans have become a normalcy. Thus, many students graduate thousands of dollars in debt. College promotion campaigns in the mainstream media often reflect human capitalistic messages which promote the idea more education equals better jobs and more pay which understandably is why people generally consider a degree worth the high investment. However, the mainstream media rarely includes messages of potential risks of financial and time perils degree pursuing students face as they become stakeholders in their future. The …

The Information Value Methodology: How Users Assess The Quality Of Web Information, Marilou Haines Oct 2014

The Information Value Methodology: How Users Assess The Quality Of Web Information, Marilou Haines

Theses and Dissertations

The Internet is a self-regulating complex system in which users decide what is relevant through their actions. Since the burden of locating and evaluating information depends on knowledge, experience, and skill, this study rigorously and holistically investigates the Web users' experience. The study began with a multidisciplinary literature review to determine how academics assess IQ on the Web. While individual models are narrowly focused, in aggregate, they delineate the boundaries of IQ needs, and identify the dimensions that are significant to the Web community. These dimensions, categorized into six knowledge domains, are the core of the information value methodology (IVM). …

Putting Reins On The Brain. How The Body And Environment Use It, Dobromir Dotov Oct 2014

Putting Reins On The Brain. How The Body And Environment Use It, Dobromir Dotov

Journal Articles

Radical embodied cognitive neuroscience (RECN) will probably rely on dynamical systems theory (DST) and complex systems theory for methods and formalism. Yet, there have been plenty of non-radical neurodynamicists out there for quite some time. How much of their work fits with radical embodied cognitive science, what do they need RECN for, and what are the inconsistencies between RECN and established neurodynamics that would have to be resolved? This paper is both theoretical hypothesis and review. First, it provides a brief overview of the typical, purely structural considerations why the central nervous systems (CNS) should be treated as a nonlinear …
