JCIPE Conference

Background

• What we ‘know’

– Literature identifies demonstrated change in attitudes as a result of learning with, about and from each other (Barr, et.al., 2000)

– Similar experiences at UK

• Less understood:

– What if students are required to participate if the primary motivation of the experience is not IPE?

– What does the process of interprofessional development look like?

• Relevant vectors for IPE

– Clinical is idea

– Consider global health as an appropriate context

The Use of Standardized Patient Simulation for Interprofessional Teaching of Palliative Care Communication Skills

• Children who receive palliative care services are affected by illnesses that are different in nature and number from those that typically affect adult recipients.

• Interdisciplinary/Interprofessional teams are the norm:

• Special knowledge of pediatric developmental, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions round out the comprehensive palliative care of pediatric patients.

• Even symptom management requires unique assessment tools.

Expanding Our Reach: Integrating Softchalk Modules To Impact Student Learning Outside Of The Library, Samantha M. Mcclellan, Toccara D. Porter

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Librarians are passionate about sharing information literacy with a wide audience of students and faculty. However, information literacy departments often struggle with barriers like class size and distance when trying to expand their efforts. To address these obstacles, librarians at the University of Louisville have designed interactive learning modules using SoftChalk, an easy-to-use software program that embeds the modules into Blackboard course pages. These modules bring relevant information literacy skills outside of the library and into unique classroom settings, specifically those of distance education and large lecture halls.

Librarians’ implementation of online learning modules has broadened over time from integrating …

Librarians As Information Trainers: Using Training Techniques To Improve Information Literacy Instruction, Olivia Reinauer Oct 2014

Librarians As Information Trainers: Using Training Techniques To Improve Information Literacy Instruction, Olivia Reinauer

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Just as a trainer addresses the continuing education needs of employees in the workplace, librarians teach research skills needed to improve academic performance. Like trainers, librarians are frequently asked to meet specific learning objectives within the span of a single session, and they must navigate the challenge of meeting and motivating a new group of participants each time. There is a wealth of information available on designing and delivering training, yet a review of the library literature shows little evidence of direct adoption of these techniques for library instruction.

This presentation will outline best practices in training design, delivery, and …

Beyond Library Resources: How To Implement Integrated Learning Across The Curriculum With Information Literacy Components Using Hybrid Delivery, Bernadette Maria Lopez-Fitzsimmons

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

As an academic librarian at Manhattan College, Riverdale, New York, I collaborate with teaching faculty and academic support centers on campus to provide holistic support to students. In the last year a cross collegial group including teaching faculty, library faculty and Instructional Designers has been created to explore ways in which to provide a “flexible structure” in curriculum across disciplines (e.g., Arts, Science, Engineering, Education, Information Literacy, etc.). Two instructional designers and a faculty member from the English Department lead the monthly in person workshops. After each workshop, scholarly and professional articles are posted in Moodle for all participants to …

Predictors Of Willingness To Participate In Hiv Vaccine Trials Among African Americans, Mindy Ma, Toni A. Young, Marcus Durham, Jeffrey L. Kibler, Zaneta Gaul, Sherri Pals, Madeline Y. Sutton

Faculty Articles

African Americans in the United States (U.S.) are disproportionately affected by HIV. Developing an HIV vaccine is an important part of the HIV prevention and treatment toolkit and may help contribute to ending the HIV epidemic. To date, HIV vaccine trials have not engaged representative numbers of African Americans. We evaluated the willingness of African Americans to participate in HIV vaccine trials and identified correlates of willingness to participate (WTP) by surveying African Americans at low- and high-risk of HIV infection in a multi-site, cross-sectional study. We enrolled 1,452 participants; 59% heterosexual women; 21% heterosexual men; 20% men who have …

Despite staggering investments made in unraveling the human genome, current estimates suggest that as much as 90% of the variance in cancer and chronic diseases can be attributed to factors outside an individual’s genetic endowment, particularly to environmental exposures experienced across his or her life course. New analytical approaches are clearly required as investigators turn to complicated systems theory and ecological, place-based and life-history perspectives in order to understand more clearly the relationships between social determinants, environmental exposures and health disparities. While traditional data analysis techniques remain foundational to health disparities research, they are easily overwhelmed by the ever-increasing size …

Astrocyte-Specific Regulation Of Hmecp2 Expression In Drosophila, David Hess-Homeier, Chia-Yu Fan, Tarun Gupta, Ann-Shyn Chiang, Sarah J. Certel

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Alterations in the expression of Methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2) either by mutations or gene duplication leads to a wide spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders including Rett Syndrome and MeCP2 duplication disorder. Common features of Rett Syndrome (RTT), MeCP2 duplication disorder, and neuropsychiatric disorders indicate that even moderate changes in MeCP2 protein levels result in functional and structural cell abnormalities. In this study, we investigated two areas of MeCP2 pathophysiology using Drosophila as a model system: the effects of MeCP2 glial gain-of-function activity on circuits controlling sleep behavior, and the cell-type specific regulation of MeCP2 expression. In this study, we first examined …

Research Brief: "Cost-Effectiveness Of Supported Employment For Veterans With Spinal Cord Injuries", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study focuses on individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) and their employment challenges. Clinical trials on supported employment (SE) intervention have established that SE is at least two times more effective in gaining competitive employment, and the cost of Spinal Cord Injury Vocational Integration Program (SCI-VIP) intervention at the one-year mark was not significantly different from the usual employment assistance offered to veterans with SCI. In practice, Veterans with SCI looking for employment should participate in SE interventions offered through the VA or other organizations, and Veterans with SCI who are seeking employment should know that there are …

Toy Library: Nurturing Talent-Learning Through Play, Prachi Kapadia Oct 2014

Toy Library: Nurturing Talent-Learning Through Play, Prachi Kapadia

Theses

The concept of the Toy Library originated during the Great Depression, when it was noticed that children were stealing toys, as they could not afford to buy them. Due to the concern of rising theft, a library was started where children could borrow a wide variety of toys. It also helped to encourage the values of honesty, responsibility and good citizenship. Since then, many toy libraries have sprouted across the United States. The concept, however, is not prevalent in other countries around the world. Hence, many people are, as yet unaware of its benefits, which include, providing an environment of …

Identifying Program Needs Of Women Detainees In A Jail Environment, Jeanna Michele Rodda Oct 2014

Identifying Program Needs Of Women Detainees In A Jail Environment, Jeanna Michele Rodda

Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1980s, the population of incarcerated women has been steadily increasing. Approximately 200,000 women are incarcerated in prisons and jails in the United States (Clarke, Phipps, Tong, Rose, and Gold, 2010). There is an increasing level of comorbidity among the population of incarcerated women, with the majority requiring mental health, physical health, substance abuse and pregnancy services at the time of their incarceration or soon afterwards. Incarcerated women face a number of challenges; they are cut off from their primary support system and their children. Their physical health deteriorates, they lack appropriate coping skills, and often experience withdrawal symptoms. …
