International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 7(4) : 318-328, 2014. Team intercollegiate athletic competition is associated with an increase in salivary cortisol (C) and testosterone (T) in men and women. The present study was designed to determine the hormonal effects of warm-up and racing in cross country runners – a sport that has both individual and team components. Members of the Emory University men’s and women’s varsity cross country teams gave saliva samples before warm-up, after warm-up, and immediately after the finish of each of two intercollegiate invitational meets held one year apart in the same setting (2010, N = 10 …

The Relationship Between Change Of Direction Speed In The Frontal Plane, Power, Reactive Strength, And Strength, Brian T. Mccormick, James C. Hannon, Charlie A. Hicks-Little, Maria Newton, Barry Shultz, Nicole Detling, Warren B. Young

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 7(4) : 260-270, 2014. Change-of-direction speed (CODS) is an important quality to performance in multi-direction sports. The relationship between CODS in the frontal plane and power, strength, and reactive strength is largely unstudied. Twenty-three male college students participated in this study. The study used a Pearson’s product-moment correlation to measure the relationship between CODS, power, strength, and reactive strength. A lateral shuffle test was used as the measure of CODS. A lateral hop for distance was used as the measure of power in the frontal plane. A countermovement vertical jump test was used as the …

The Dimensions Of Judicial Impartiality, Charles Gardner Geyh Oct 2014

The Dimensions Of Judicial Impartiality, Charles Gardner Geyh

Florida Law Review

Scholars have traditionally analyzed judicial impartiality piecemeal, in disconnected debates on discrete topics. As a consequence, current understandings of judicial impartiality are balkanized and muddled. This Article seeks to reconceptualize judicial impartiality comprehensively, across contexts. In an era when “we are all legal realists now,” perfect impartiality—the complete absence of bias or prejudice—is at most an ideal; “impartial enough” has, of necessity, become the realistic goal. Understanding when imperfectly impartial is nonetheless impartial enough is aided by conceptualizing judicial impartiality in three distinct dimensions: a procedural dimension, in which impartiality affords parties a fair hearing; a political dimension, in which …

Background:

Because of the deceased donor organ shortage, more kidney patients are considering whether to receive kidneys from family and friends, a process called living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT). Although Blacks and Hispanics are 3.4 and 1.5 times more likely, respectively, to develop end stage renal disease (ESRD) than Whites, they are less likely to receive LDKTs. To address this disparity, a new randomized controlled trial (RCT) will assess whether Black, Hispanic, and White transplant patients’ knowledge, readiness to pursue LDKT, and receipt of LDKTs can be increased when they participate in the Your Path to Transplant (YPT) computer-tailored …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2014-10-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Civilization And Self-Determination: Interpreting R.G. Collingwood For The Twenty-First Century - Part I, Gautam Ghosh Oct 2014

Civilization And Self-Determination: Interpreting R.G. Collingwood For The Twenty-First Century - Part I, Gautam Ghosh

Comparative Civilizations Review

This article – the first of two – elaborates and endorses the understanding of civilization as advanced by R. G. Collingwood. Particular attention is given to two of his most neglected works, The New Leviathan and "What 'Civilization' Means." The New Leviathan in particular was written in the context of the rise of fascism and the prosecution of World War II. To support the war effort, Collingwood reconceptualized notions of civilization and linked it to a rationality of self-determination. Central to his argument are the distinctions he draws between civilization and barbarism, on the one hand, and between social, economic …

Explaining Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Use Of High-Volume Hospitals: Decision-Making Complexity And Local Hospital Environments, Karl Kronebusch, Bradford H. Gray, Mark Schlesinger Oct 2014

Explaining Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Use Of High-Volume Hospitals: Decision-Making Complexity And Local Hospital Environments, Karl Kronebusch, Bradford H. Gray, Mark Schlesinger

Publications and Research

Racial/ethnic minorities are less likely to use higher-quality hospitals than whites. We propose that a higher level of informationrelated complexity in their local hospital environments compounds the effects of discrimination and more limited access to services, contributing to racial/ethnic disparities in hospital use. While minorities live closer than whites to high-volume hospitals, minorities also face greater choice complexity and live in neighborhoods with lower levels of medical experience. Our empirical results reveal that it is generally the overall context associated with proximity, choice complexity, and local experience, rather than differential sensitivity to these factors, that provides a partial explanation of …

A Meta-Analytic Test Of Redundancy And Relative Importance Of The Dark Triad And Five Factor Model Of Personality, Ernest H. O'Boyle, Donelson R. Forsyth, George C. Banks, Paul A. Story, Charles D. White Oct 2014

A Meta-Analytic Test Of Redundancy And Relative Importance Of The Dark Triad And Five Factor Model Of Personality, Ernest H. O'Boyle, Donelson R. Forsyth, George C. Banks, Paul A. Story, Charles D. White

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

We examined the relationships between Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy—the three traits of the Dark Triad (DT)—and the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality. The review identified 310 independent samples drawn from 215 sources and yielded information pertaining to global trait relationships and facet-level relationships. We used meta-analysis to examine (a) the bivariate relations between the DT and the five global traits and 30 facets of the FFM; (b) the relative importance of each of the FFM global traits in predicting DT; and (c) the relationship between the DT and FFM facets identified in translational models of narcissism and psychopathy. These …

The Effects Of Student Involvement In Afterschool Activities On Childhood Obesity, Lauren E. Van Derzee Oct 2014

The Effects Of Student Involvement In Afterschool Activities On Childhood Obesity, Lauren E. Van Derzee

Master's Theses

Childhood obesity has been a significant health issue in the United States since the 1970s. In an effort to combat this issue, children are encouraged to be physically active and maintain a nutritional diet. Previous sociological literature has analyzed the effects of the family and neighborhood environment in an effort to understand the socioeconomic forces influencing obesity. This study extends this literature by analyzing the effects of how children spend their time in structured, semi-structured, and unstructured afterschool activities. Building upon Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and concept of cultural capital, I argue that afterschool activities present a particular structured …

Graduated Driver Licensing : An International Review, Lyndel J. Bates, Siobhan Allen, Kerry Watson, Barry, Mark J. King, Jeremy Davey Oct 2014

Graduated Driver Licensing : An International Review, Lyndel J. Bates, Siobhan Allen, Kerry Watson, Barry, Mark J. King, Jeremy Davey

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Graduated driver licensing (GDL) aims to gradually increase the exposure of new drivers to more complex driving situations and typically consists of learner, provisional and open licence phases. The first phase, the learner licence, is designed to allow novice drivers to obtain practical driving experience in lower risk situations. The learner licence can delay licensure, encourage novice drivers to learn under supervision, mandate the number of hours of practice required to progress to the next phase and encourage parental involvement. The second phase, the provisional licence, establishes various driving restrictions and thereby reduces exposure to situations of higher risk, such …

The Role Of Valence In Self-Referenced Memory In Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Catherine Burrows Oct 2014

The Role Of Valence In Self-Referenced Memory In Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Catherine Burrows

Open Access Theses

Individuals with autism have consistently demonstrated atypical processing of and memory for self-referenced information compared to their typically developing peers, yet the underlying cause of these differences remains unknown. The present study aims to explore a potential mechanism underlying atypical memory for self-referenced information in higher functioning individuals with autism (HFA) and a comparison group of individuals without an autism diagnosis (COM). Participants included 79 children and adolescents with an HFA diagnosis (68 males, 11 females) and 73 COM individuals (53 males, 20 females) who completed a self-referenced memory task. Diagnostic group differences were detected in endorsement and memory for …
