Police Sexual Misconduct: Arrested Officers And Their Victims, Philip M. Stinson, Steven L. Brewer, Brooke E. Mathna, John Liederbach, Christine M. Englebrecht

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Police sexual misconduct encompasses a range of acts from less serious noncriminal behaviors to more egregious criminal behaviors including police sexual violence. Victims of sex crimes are often reluctant to report sexual abuse when the offender is a police officer. The study provides empirical data on 771 sex-related arrest cases in years 2005-2008 of 555 sworn officers at 449 nonfederal law enforcement agencies across the United States. The study identifies and describes incidents where officers were arrested for sex crimes through a quantitative content analysis of published newspaper articles and court records. Findings focus on arrested officers and their victims.

Digital Media Use In Art Therapy, Natalie Rae Carlton Oct 2014

Digital Media Use In Art Therapy, Natalie Rae Carlton

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This art-based, phenomenological inquiry investigated how four art therapists and five art therapy clients have used digital media. Polarities in how computer-mediated materials are experienced and the larger impacts of technology on clients, therapists, and the therapeutic encounter were exposed. New media have brought constant contradiction in characterization just as all previous technologies have reflected responses from unease to adaptation. Some key questions in the research are how digitized materials are being used in art therapy and by whom and when? Related questions are what effects can these materials have for clients and what learning, interests, and media adaptations have …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Between-Domain Relations Of Students' Academic Emotions And Their Judgments Of School Domain Similarity, Thomas Goetz, Ludwig Haag, Anastasiya A. Lipnevich, Melanie M. Keller, Anne C. Frenzel, Antonie P. M. Collier Oct 2014

Between-Domain Relations Of Students' Academic Emotions And Their Judgments Of School Domain Similarity, Thomas Goetz, Ludwig Haag, Anastasiya A. Lipnevich, Melanie M. Keller, Anne C. Frenzel, Antonie P. M. Collier

Publications and Research

With the aim to deepen our understanding of the between-domain relations of academic emotions, a series of three studies was conducted. We theorized that between-domain relations of trait (i.e., habitual) emotions reflected students' judgments of domain similarities, whereas between-domain relations of state (i.e., momentary) emotions did not. This supposition was based on the accessibility model of emotional self-report, according to which individuals' beliefs tend to strongly impact trait, but not state emotions. The aim of Study 1 (interviews; N = 40; 8th and 11th graders) was to gather salient characteristics of academic domains from students' perspective. In Study 2 ( …

The Teacher Pay For Performance Phenomenon, Deborah Viscardi

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The purpose of this dissertation research was to explore the link between teacher motivation and performance-based compensation. There is a critical need for more research on teacher pay-for- performance systems, especially as it relates to motivation, student achievement, and the profession of teaching. Qualitative in design, the intent of this research study was to make meaning of teachers’ perceptions about the influence of performance-based compensation on the profession and practice of teaching. Bringing A Behavioral Health Consultant To Residency: Implications For Practice And Training, Natasha Gouge, Jodi Polaha, Rebecca Powers

International Journal of Health Sciences Education

This study examined pediatric residents’ responsiveness and experiences in the context of a new pilot program, building an on-site Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) into their primary care training site. Fifteen pediatric residents were divided so that 9 had access to an on-site BHC and 6 did not. Over the first year of the program, research assistants observed 322 patient visits to record concerns raised, residents’ responses, and visit length. Data regarding BHC activity and residents’ subjective impressions of the program were also collected. Results showed that at least one BH concern was raised in 24% of observed visits. Residents with …

Team Up for Healthy Living was a cluster-randomized trial to evaluate a cross-peer school-based obesity prevention program in Southern Appalachia. Undergraduate students from the disciplines of Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Public Health were trained as peer facilitators to deliver an 8-week curriculum in high school Lifetime Wellness classes. The focus of the curriculum was on improving diet and physical activity with an additional emphasis on enhancing leadership and communication skills. Control group participants received their regularly scheduled Lifetime Wellness curriculum. The current article is about the experiences of an undergraduate kinesiology student participating as a peer-facilitator in the Team-Up for Healthy …

The Emotional Making Of The Basque Working Class, Sara Hidalgo Oct 2014

The Emotional Making Of The Basque Working Class, Sara Hidalgo

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

The aim of this paper is to present a reflection on the class consciousness making process, according to the so-called “affective turn” perspective. The immediate área of study is the Basque Country, more specifically the Nervion River área of Bilbao, at the end of 19th century, when Socialist movements arose, developed, and became the working class movement main party. The explanatory purpose is to illustrate why Basque workers accepted socialist proposals, thus becoming class-conscious, and thus joining a working class movement. The main hypothesis is that class consciousness is an emotional construction.

The Case For A Modern Euskara: Proposed Structural Changes To Euskara Batua, Ambrose Goikoetxea Oct 2014

The Case For A Modern Euskara: Proposed Structural Changes To Euskara Batua, Ambrose Goikoetxea

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

This paper comes into being because of this author’s concern about the limited use and slow evolution of Euskara Batua, the version of the Basque language spoken today in parts of the Basque Country and the larger B, also called Euskal Herria, with its historical regions in Europe, bounded by Spain in the south and by France in the north, as well as in dozens of Basque communities in the USA, Central, and South America. What’s the problem? Well, currently the number of auxiliary verbs (verbal forms, aditz languntzaileak) in Euskara Batua as proposed by the Euskaltzaindia, the Academy of …

Focal Cortical Thickness Correlates Of Exceptional Memory Training In Vedic Priests, Giridhar P. Kalamangalam, Timothy M. Ellmore Oct 2014

Focal Cortical Thickness Correlates Of Exceptional Memory Training In Vedic Priests, Giridhar P. Kalamangalam, Timothy M. Ellmore

Publications and Research

The capacity for semantic memory—the ability to acquire and store knowledge of the world—is highly developed in the human brain. In particular, semantic memory assimilated through an auditory route may be a uniquely human capacity. One method of obtaining neurobiological insight into memory mechanisms is through the study of experts. In this work, we study a group of Hindu Vedic priests, whose religious training requires the memorization of vast tracts of scriptural texts through an oral tradition, recalled spontaneously during a lifetime of subsequent spiritual practice. We demonstrate focal increases of cortical thickness in regions of the left prefrontal lobe …
