Religious Identity, Religious Attendance, And Parental Control, Young-Il Kim, W. Bradford Wilcox
Religious Identity, Religious Attendance, And Parental Control, Young-Il Kim, W. Bradford Wilcox
Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology
Using a national sample of adolescents aged 10–18 years and their parents (N = 5,117), this article examines whether parental religious identity and religious participation are associated with the ways in which parents control their children. We hypothesize that both religious orthodoxy and weekly religious attendance are related to heightened levels of three elements of parental control: monitoring activities, normative regulations, and network closure. Results indicate that an orthodox religious identity for Catholic and Protestant parents and higher levels of religious attendance for parents as a whole are associated with increases in monitoring activities and normative regulations of American adolescents.

Structured Voluntary Youth Activities And Positive Outcomes In Adulthood: An Exploratory Study Of Involvement In Scouting And Subjective Well-Being, Sung Joon Jang, Byron R. Johnson, Young-Il Kim, Edward C. Polson, Buster G. Smith
Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology
This study explores whether youth involvement in Scouting has positive consequences later in life. We examine whether the number of years of participation in Scouting is positively associated with human and social capital and recreational lifestyles in adulthood, and whether these are linked to subjective well-being: relational, emotional, and physical health. To explore this potential relationship, we estimated a structural equation model, analyzing data from a national sample of adult males. We found that youth involvement in Scouting is positively related to subjective well-being indirectly via the positive adult outcomes.
The Profanation Of Revelation: On Language And Immanence In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
The Profanation Of Revelation: On Language And Immanence In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay seeks to articulate the many implications which Giorgio Agamben's work holds for theology. It aims, therefore, to examine his (re)conceptualizations of language in light of particular historical glosses on the “name of God” and the nature of the “mystical,” as well as to highlight the political task of profanation, one of his most central concepts, in relation to the logos said to embody humanity's “religious” quest to find its Voice. As such, we see how he challenges those standard (ontotheological) notions of transcendence which have been consistently aligned with various historical forms of sovereignty. In addition, I intend …

Developing An E-Learning Training Package For Academic Staff In One University In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Al Mulhem
Developing An E-Learning Training Package For Academic Staff In One University In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Al Mulhem
Plymouth Institute of Education Theses
The focus of this study is the development of an e-learning training package for the academic staff in King Faisal University (KFU) in Saudi Arabia. Evidence suggests that there is a lack of training for academic staff in Saudi Higher Education on how to integrate e-learning in their teaching. Despite this, very little attention is paid in the research literature to the design and evaluation of e-learning training. There is no clarity therefore about what constitutes effective e-learning training in higher education. This study aimed to design, implement and evaluate a training package for the academic staff. The study was …
Sustainability In Secondary Education In England: An Ethnographic Study, Ciaran Francis O'Sullivan
Sustainability In Secondary Education In England: An Ethnographic Study, Ciaran Francis O'Sullivan
Plymouth Institute of Education Theses
This research sets out to establish both the extent to which and the ways in which English Secondary schools have a school culture focusing upon sustainability. I visited three case study schools for six weeks each: these were carefully selected to represent a range of progress towards becoming sustainable schools. I visited two other ‘benchmark’ schools for two days each: these were chosen on the recommendations of school sustainability experts, and visiting them helped me judge the progress my case-study schools had made. I took an ethnographic approach to the research, conducting about 80 interviews with various members of my …
End-Of-Life Discussions In Nonmalignant Respiratory Disease In The United Kingdom And Canada, Nicole Stephen
End-Of-Life Discussions In Nonmalignant Respiratory Disease In The United Kingdom And Canada, Nicole Stephen
School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses
Nonmalignant respiratory diseases (NMRD), such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), are a leading cause of morbidity worldwide. Research has shown that patients with NMRD in the UK, Canada and the US have less access to palliative care services than patients with other respiratory diseases such as lung cancer. Discussing preferences for end-of-life care in NMRD can be difficult for patients, carers and health professionals, however it is essential to ensure that the patient’s wishes are met, particularly when resources are scarce. Despite similar nationalised health care systems in the UK and Canada, a recent report by the Economist Intelligence …
The Viewing Glass Of Disorder: Do Adults' Perceptions Of 'Youth' Affect Their Perceptions Of The 'Disorder' In Their Locality?, Grant Kennett
The Viewing Glass Of Disorder: Do Adults' Perceptions Of 'Youth' Affect Their Perceptions Of The 'Disorder' In Their Locality?, Grant Kennett
The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review
This dissertation explores the extent to which adults' perceptions of youth affect their perceptions of disorder in their local area. Utilising qualitative data from semistructured interviews and a focus group alongside secondary data from the Safer Cornwall Partnership Strategic Assessment (Sorensen 2012), the aim of this study was to not only establish if adults' perceptions of young people have a direct impact upon their perceptions of disorder in the Cornish town of St. Austell, but to also analyse how such perceptions are established, informed and influenced. Grounded by a wholly interpretive epistemology and through a 'thematic' analytical approach, it was …
Digital Piracy: Neutralising Piracy On The Digital Waves, Alexander Bryan
Digital Piracy: Neutralising Piracy On The Digital Waves, Alexander Bryan
The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review
Rates of digital piracy, defined by Gopal, et al. (2004: 3) as 'the illegal act of copying digital goods for any reason other than backup, without permission from or compensation to the copyright holder', appear to be rising despite increasingly stringent methods employed by both legislators and the industries affected to curtail it. The harm it causes the industries is also increasing; affecting everyone from producers to consumers. This study explores the aetiology of digital piracy; specifically whether students in the United Kingdom neutralise the guilt for their actions through the use of Sykes and Matza's (1957) techniques of neutralisation. …

The Coroners And Justice Act 2009: '(A)Mending' The Law On Provocation?, Carrie-Ann Blockley
The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review
This article identifies the criticisms with the partial defence of provocation and examines whether the new loss of control defence, as enacted under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, addresses these criticisms and creates an effective defence.
Beautiful Disease: The Story Of Angelina Jolie’S Mastectomy In The American Media, Angie Michel
Beautiful Disease: The Story Of Angelina Jolie’S Mastectomy In The American Media, Angie Michel
Maria Dittman Library Research Competition: Student Award Winners
In 2013 Angelina Jolie revealed in a New York Times editorial that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy earlier that year. This qualitative study examines the social meaning of that Times piece. Using fantasy theme analysis, I unearth the story the American media told about Jolie, her surgery and her editorial. I find that newspapers and magazines dramatized Jolie’s gender traits and portrayed her as an ultra-feminine hero protected from the physical and social threats of breast cancer.

The 2014 release of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 33rd edition of the print directory and the 14th year of the online version. The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was drawn from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. Additional information was obtained from surveys, foundation websites, annual reports, and newsletters.
How Do Patients With Advanced Cancer Cope With An Uncertain Disease Trajectory? Implications For Grief Counselling, Elizabeth A. Lobb
How Do Patients With Advanced Cancer Cope With An Uncertain Disease Trajectory? Implications For Grief Counselling, Elizabeth A. Lobb
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
A growing number of cancer patients are living longer with incurable disease. This paper describes strategies that patients use to cope with the uncertain trajectory of their disease. Twenty-seven patients with a prognosis of 12 months were recruited from the oncology and palliative care service at three metropolitan Sydney hospitals. A semi-structured face-to-face interview was conducted, which was audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. The patients coped with the uncertain trajectory of their disease through avoidance, maintaining a normal life, comparing themselves favourably with others in a similar situation and remaining positive. Participants indicated that they did not wish referral for psychological …

A Home With Dignity: Domestic Violence And Property Rights, Margaret E. Johnson
A Home With Dignity: Domestic Violence And Property Rights, Margaret E. Johnson
All Faculty Scholarship
This Article argues that the legal system should do more to address intimate partner violence and each party's need for a home for several reasons. First, domestic violence is a leading cause of individual and family homelessness. Second, the struggle over rights to a shared home can increase the violence to which the woman is subjected. And third, a woman who decides to continue to live with the person who abused her receives little or no legal support, despite the evidence that this decision could most effectively reduce the violence. The legal system's current failings result from its limited goals-achieving …

Exploring The Patient Experience Of Changes In Appetite And Diet With Incretin Analogue Therapy, Rosamund May Paisey
Exploring The Patient Experience Of Changes In Appetite And Diet With Incretin Analogue Therapy, Rosamund May Paisey
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Incretin analogue therapies are a valuable recent treatment option for type 2 diabetes (T2D) as they can improve blood glucose control and aid weight loss. The way in which an individual recognises and responds to changes in satiety signals induced by these treatments may explain why individual response is variable. Purposive sampling of individuals with successful outcome of incretin analogue therapy (GLP-1) for T2D gathered a participant cohort 15 people with 37 years (448 months) combined experience of this treatment and 149 years of living with diabetes. The focus group data reported in this thesis, explores their experiences, the differing …
Blinking In Human Communicative Behaviour And It's Reproduction In Artificial Agents, Christopher Colin Ford
Blinking In Human Communicative Behaviour And It's Reproduction In Artificial Agents, Christopher Colin Ford
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
A significant year-on-year rise in the creation and sales of personal and domestic robotic systems and the development of online embodied communicative agents (ECAs) has in parallel seen an increase in end-users from the public domain interacting with these systems. A number of these robotic/ECA systems are defined as social, whereby they are physically designed to resemble the bodily structure of a human and behaviorally designed to exist within human social surroundings. Their behavioural design is especially important with respect to communication as it is commonly stated that for any social robotic/ECA system to be truly useful within its role, …
Comparison Of Behaviour Exhibited By Horses Ridden In Conventional Bitted And Bitless Bridles, Rose Margaret Scofield
Comparison Of Behaviour Exhibited By Horses Ridden In Conventional Bitted And Bitless Bridles, Rose Margaret Scofield
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The bitless bridle has been advocated as an alternative to traditional bitted bridles in many equestrian disciplines in order to avoid bit injury and distress that has been reported in previous research. Anecdotal observations and lay publications suggest that the bitless bridle has become very popular amongst riders and horse owners in the United Kingdom. The bitless bridle has been compared favourably to the use of the bit in foundation training with improved performance in bridling, long-reining and riding reported for some horses in the bitless sample group. Similarly, improved dressage test scores and comments by a judge have been …
A History Of The Cornish Male Voice Choir: The Relationship Between Music, Place And Culture, Susan Margaret Skinner
A History Of The Cornish Male Voice Choir: The Relationship Between Music, Place And Culture, Susan Margaret Skinner
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis documents and examines the history of Cornish male voice choirs from their origins in the late nineteenth century through to the present day. The evolution of the choirs has hitherto been charted largely through scattered oral testimonies, whereas this work traces the rise, decline and resurgence of the male choral tradition by drawing from a range of primary sources, including newspapers and repertoire in addition to oral history. The thesis is organised chronologically and the main chapters chart the development of Cornish male voice choirs from the Methodist point of origin, to the subsequent expansion of the male …

Tracing The Compositional Process. Sound Art That Rewrites Its Own Past: Formation, Praxis And A Computer Framework, Hanns Holger Rutz
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The domain of this thesis is electroacoustic computer-based music and sound art. It investigates a facet of composition which is often neglected or ill-defined: the process of composing itself and its embedding in time. Previous research mostly focused on instrumental composition or, when electronic music was included, the computer was treated as a tool which would eventually be subtracted from the equation. The aim was either to explain a resultant piece of music by reconstructing the intention of the composer, or to explain human creativity by building a model of the mind. Our aim instead is to understand composition as …
Perceiving Voids: Memory And Sight Afflictions In Contemporary Cinema, Francesco Marineo
Perceiving Voids: Memory And Sight Afflictions In Contemporary Cinema, Francesco Marineo
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
My thesis focuses on the perceptive afflictions caused by alteration of the normal biological functioning of sight and memory. These afflictions are related to the redefinition and disgregation of the classical and postclassical cinematographic characters, and affect cinematographic language, establishing a dialectical relation with the filmic image that contaminates our spectatorial perception. In the first chapter I propose a different reading of a few moments in film history, turning points in which a modification of the ordinary sensorial patterns has been introduced. From the German Expressionism to the late authorial experiments of the 60s, there is a sort of hidden …

Outline Of A Subversive Technopoetic: For A Libertarian Pedartgogy, Francesco Monico
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The thesis explores the relationships between knowledge and knowing in contemporary 21st century information society, using the foundation of the Faculty of Media Design & New Media Art at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milano as a research apparatus. This Faculty was established between 2003 and 2012, in Milano, Italy. The starting point of the research was established in the hypothesis that technics have tertiarised memory (Stiegler B., 1994), that knowledge is always founded on an ontological pessimism (Queneau R., 1933, Lyotard F., 1979) and on a perpetual process of the generation of meaning (Gadda C., 1923-29, Foucault …
Blackshirts And White Wigs: Reflections On Public Order Law And The Political Activism Of The British Union Of Fascists, Iain Channing
Blackshirts And White Wigs: Reflections On Public Order Law And The Political Activism Of The British Union Of Fascists, Iain Channing
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
While domestic fascism within the United Kingdom has never critically challenged Parliamentary sovereignty, it has decisively disrupted public order since its roots were established in the inter-war political scene. The violence provoked by Sir Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists (BUF) was one of the stimulating factors behind the enactment of the Public Order Act 1936. This Act significantly strengthened the powers of the police to regulate or proscribe varies forms of political activism. This thesis analyses the legal responses of Parliament, the police and the judiciary to interwar British fascism. In addition, by analysing the legal responses to public …
Discourses Pertaining To, And Lived Experiences Of, 'Maternal Obesity' (Body Mass Index (Bmi) ≥ 30) And Gestational Diabetes Mellitus/Type Two Diabetes Mellitus In The Pregnancy And Post-Birth Period., Rachel Juliet Jarvie
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis reports on a qualitative exploration of the experiences of 30 women designated as ‘high risk’ due to the co-existence of ‘maternal obesity’ (BMI ≥ 30) and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)/Type Two Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in pregnancy. This is examined in the context of medico-scientific/public health/ popular media discourses pertaining to ‘maternal obesity’/GDM/T2DM in pregnancy. ‘Maternal obesity’/GDM/T2DM in pregnancy are increasingly prevalent and clinically associated in manifold ways. Increasing prevalence is linked to the ‘global epidemic’ of ‘obesity’/diabetes: now commonly referred to as ‘diabesity’. Current biomedical knowledge asserts ‘maternal obesity’ and diabetes (‘maternal diabesity’) synergise in causing adverse pregnancy …

Computer-Aided Tools In Negotiation: Negotiable Issues, Counterfactual Thinking, And Satisfaction, Terence T. Ow, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Charles E. Naquin
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Negotiations research has identified both economic and social-psychological outcomes are important for negotiations. Despite the economic advantages of having multiple issues to negotiate, inconsistencies exist between objective economic outcomes and negotiator satisfaction. Although having more negotiable issues yields better objective payoffs, it can result in more thoughts about different possible outcomes. Such counterfactual thoughts about different outcomes can reduce overall satisfaction due to increased cognitive complexity and thoughts about different outcomes. In this study, we explore how information technology can influence negotiator satisfaction and better manage counterfactual thoughts and post-negotiation satisfaction. Results support the prediction that having a computer aid …
Cultural Icons': Media Representations Of Second Homes In New Zealand, Trudie Walters
Cultural Icons': Media Representations Of Second Homes In New Zealand, Trudie Walters
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
New Zealanders have a long history of second home ownership, and the second home landscape is an important part of the New Zealand culture. Traditional second homes are known colloquially as the ‘bach’ or ‘crib’, and it is part of the New Zealand psyche to ‘escape to the bach’ for the weekend, especially over the summer months. However, since the 1960s these traditional second homes have been replaced in many areas by second homes that are indistinguishable from urban homes. They have become much larger, are often architecturally designed and with more modern conveniences and technology than the traditional bach. …
