Out Of Our Comfort Zones: Reflections About Teaching Qualitative Research At A Distance, Cheyl A. Hunter, Debora Hinderliter Ortloff, Rachelle Winkle-Wagner

The Qualitative Report

How does an increase in distance technology alter the teaching of qualitative research? This article uses a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (McKinney, 2007) framework in which each author collected data in the form of personal narrative essays about teaching qualitative research from a distance, course products, teaching evaluations, and student comments. Individually we created a narrative reflection on the teaching and learning of qualitative methodology; particularly comparing our individual experiences with both distance and in-person teaching formats. Through these reflective essays, we provide ideas about our teaching of qualitative research via distance technology as a conceptual conversation about the …

Like A Dog Walking On Its Hind Legs: Samuel Johnson And Quakers, Paul A. Lacey Nov 2014

Like A Dog Walking On Its Hind Legs: Samuel Johnson And Quakers, Paul A. Lacey

Quaker Studies

Samuel Johnson liked some individual Quakers but disliked the sect; an examination of his encounters with them, as reported in Boswell's Life, along with reminiscences of the Lloyd family, Mary Knowles and Anna Seward, throws significant light on both Johnson's religious and social views and on some aspects of the Quakerism of his time. The commonly-held view of Quakerism in the Quietist period is, in W. C. Braithwaite's phrase, that these were 'years of outward respectability and inward spiritual decline'. He adds that 'religion as a whole was suffering from the lassitude of Dissent and the devastations of Deism'. Kathryn …

Obedience To The Inward Oracle: An Analysis Of Some Early Quaker Women's Publications, Julie Sutherland Nov 2014

Obedience To The Inward Oracle: An Analysis Of Some Early Quaker Women's Publications, Julie Sutherland

Quaker Studies

An undeniable tension exists in human nature between conscience and external authority. This dichotomy was no less existent in seventeenth-century England, when George Fox began preaching about the inward voice-or Christ's light-as a greater authority than any external entity. His thoughts were radical (anachronistic; fanatical or enthusiastic would be the seventeenth-century terms) because they challenged the hierarchical framework of Early Modern England. The notion of obeying internal authority was particularly 'radical' for Quaker women, whose gender offered them little opportunity to challenge the roles society imposed on them; by challenging external authority these women were bringing into question societal norms …

Teaching About Propaganda: An Examination Of The Historical Roots Of Media Literacy, Renee Hobbs, Sandra Mcgee Nov 2014

Teaching About Propaganda: An Examination Of The Historical Roots Of Media Literacy, Renee Hobbs, Sandra Mcgee

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Contemporary propaganda is ubiquitous in our culture today as public relations and marketing efforts have become core dimensions of the contemporary communication system, affecting all forms of personal, social and public expression. To examine the origins of teaching and learning about propaganda, we examine some instructional materials produced in the 1930s by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA), which popularized an early form of media literacy that promoted critical analysis in responding to propaganda in mass communication, including in radio, film and newspapers. They developed study guides and distributed them widely, popularizing concepts from classical rhetoric and expressing them in …

School Climate And Risky Behaviors Among Rural Adolescents, Marissa Sherri Green Nov 2014

School Climate And Risky Behaviors Among Rural Adolescents, Marissa Sherri Green

Theses and Dissertations

The present study sought to determine whether rural high school students' positive perceptions of their school climate could make it less likely that they would engage in or be exposed to risky behaviors, and if students' gender and grade moderated this association. School climate is a construct that consists of the following five major dimensions: Safety, Relationships, Teaching and Learning, the Instructional Environment, and the School Improvement Process, although this final dimension was not assessed in the current study (Thapa, Cohen, Guffey, and Higgins-D'Alessandro, 2013). The specific risky behaviors that were examined in this study were delinquent behaviors, victimization, substance …

Bilingual Language Assessment: Contemporary Practice Versus Recommended Practice, Graciela Arias Nov 2014

Bilingual Language Assessment: Contemporary Practice Versus Recommended Practice, Graciela Arias

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the increasing number of culturally and linguistically diverse students within American school systems, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in school settings must be prepared to distinguish between typically developing bilingual students and those with language impairments. The purpose of this study was to identify current practices of school-based SLPs for bilingual language assessment and compare them to both American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) best practice guidelines, and mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The study was modeled to replicate Caesar and Kohler's (2007) study to include a nationally representative sample. While the survey was opened over 400 times, …

Impact Of Customer’S Queuing Over Service Quality A Case Study On Mobile Phone Operators In Macedonia, Nehat Ramadini, Violeta Madzova, Sejdi Xhemaili

UBT International Conference

The worldwide mobile phone market recently is enormously growing associated with a strong demand for smart phones across the entire globe. International Data Corporation (a premier global provider of market intelligence data) argues that the overall mobile phone market is growing faster than previously forecasts, with over than 1.8 billion mobile phones during 2014, and expects to sell over 2.3 billion mobile phones in 2017, in a single year. The world trend in customers’ demand has caused a strong competition among mobile phone companies. Given that the customer satisfaction is a fundamental marketing tool, and companies have gained better understanding …

Use Of Passive Design Features And Simulation Modeling To Improve Energy Performance And Reduce Environmental Impacts Of Buildings In Kosovo, Ferhat Bejtullahu, Dukagjin Bakija, Art Bejtullahu

UBT International Conference

Building physics and climate adapted architectural design parameters such as site, building form, orientation, shading and envelope performance (including structures and openings), contributes a significant proportion towards the better energy performance and reduce environmental impact of buildings. Due to extensive demand of electricity derived from the widespread use of cooling and heating systems has necessitated evolution and incorporation of minimum energy performance requirements in design practice. Objective of this paper is to promote role of passive design features and energy simulation to the researchers, scientists and practitioners within planning, architecture construction industry. Jointly, all these three industries are experiencing an …

On Form And Logic Of Structures, Feti Selmani Nov 2014

On Form And Logic Of Structures, Feti Selmani

UBT International Conference

In Civil Engineering, every structure harbours some degree of logic within it. Sometimes, it is easy to see it, while sometimes it lies somehow hidden and only a well informed eye can take hold of it. The Natural phenomena are dual in their manifestation. So are Tension and Compression, which represents the basic “genomes” of this interaction and are present within each structure from the simplest to the most complicated one. A structural form represents a physical manifestation of this invisible interplay, which, when in consonance with the natural flow of forces results not only in an economic but in …

The Impact Of The Financial Crises In The Management Of The Corporates, Armanda Keqi, Ilda Topalli Nov 2014

The Impact Of The Financial Crises In The Management Of The Corporates, Armanda Keqi, Ilda Topalli

UBT International Conference

Financial crises are very damaging and costly. They can spread easily from one country to another. The most apparent example was the crisis of 2008, which took global dimensions. The entire world was affected by the crisis and many countries are still suffering the consequences, such as: economic decline, failure of banks or financial institutions, price fluctuations, etc. The main factors that cause shocks in the financial sector can be grouped as follows: inappropriate macroeconomic policies, the weakness of the financial system, global financial conditions, the difference of exchange rates and political instability. These factors, create the conditions for the …

The Impact Of Occupational Stressors In Public Administration: What Should Employees Do?, Edit Lezha, Gezim Dibra, Jozef Bushati, Bujane Topalli

UBT International Conference

Frequent and rapid changes are influencing factors in the quality of human life. Work intensity, the difference between material and spiritual needs of employees and their needs balance, are more general factors that cause stress at work. These requirements may be perceived as positive or negative challenges. Requirements imbalances can lead in procrastination which increase work related stress and concern in managing it. So stress is a consequence of the interaction of employees with conditions that surround them, but, on the other hand employee themselves can affect their own level of stress that they are experiencing in workplace. Organizations that …

Citizenship And Ethnic Relations In Kosovo, Bekim Baliqi Nov 2014

Citizenship And Ethnic Relations In Kosovo, Bekim Baliqi

UBT International Conference

The article explores the issue of multi-ethnic society, by looking at the state iconography, the citizenship issue as well as ethnic relations based on Kosovo as a case study. The theoretical framework is based on the power-sharing model known as consociationalism democracy. Research methods applied here are based mainly in discourse analysis and in content analysis of relevant documents, literature and other sources. The inter-ethnic relations between Serbs and Albanians will be traced historically from the period after the Second World War, following with the dissolution of Yugoslavia and Milosevic’s regime, continuing with the post-conflict period in Kosovo through to …

The Universal Dimension: William Loftus Hare's Pivotal Contribution To London Yearly Meeting, Tony Adams Nov 2014

The Universal Dimension: William Loftus Hare's Pivotal Contribution To London Yearly Meeting, Tony Adams

Quaker Studies

The origins of Christian universalism in the Religious Society of Friends during the seventeenth century are reviewed. A Hicksite shift among some Friends in the nineteenth century is seen as paving the way for a radical extension oflnner Lightist philosophies of universalism. A doctrine of Inner Light mysticism, as presented by Rufus Jones, is considered in the context of an extension of universalism among Quakers. As editor of the Socialist Quaker Society journal The Ploughshare, and in later published studies, William Loftus Hare (1863-1943) forwarded a form of theological universalism at some considerable variance with its previous meanings throughout Quaker …

Patterns And Practices Of Women's Leadership In The Yorkshire Quaker Community, 1760-1820, Helen Plant Nov 2014

Patterns And Practices Of Women's Leadership In The Yorkshire Quaker Community, 1760-1820, Helen Plant

Quaker Studies

By the second half of the eighteenth century, women ministers had become the principal upholders of the spiritual life of Quakerism in Yorkshire. Drawing on a range of sources including the institutional records of Quaker Meetings, personal correspondence and spiritual journals and autobiographies, this paper aims to shed light on the precise nature of female leadership in the Religious Society of Friends and to contribute to greater understanding of the conditions under which it became dominant. It suggests that the growing tendency for women to outnumber men as ministers was closely linked to wider social and economic trends within contemporary …

Hindu Responses To Religious Diversity And The Nature Of Post-Mortem Progress, Ankur Barua Nov 2014

Hindu Responses To Religious Diversity And The Nature Of Post-Mortem Progress, Ankur Barua

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

THE last two hundred years of Hindu–Christian encounters have produced distinctive forms of Hindu thought which, while often rooted in the broad philosophical-cultural continuities of Vedic outlooks, grappled with, on the one hand, the colonial pressures of European modernity, and, on the other hand, the numerous critiques by Christian theologians and missionaries on the Hindu life-worlds. Thus, the spectrum of Hindu responses from Raja Rammohun Roy through Swami Vivekananda to S. Radhakrishnan demonstrates attempts to creatively engage with Christian representations of Hindu belief and practice, by accepting their prima facie validity at one level while negating their adequacy at another.

Preaching For Hire: Public Issues And Private Concerns In A Skirmish Of The Lamb's War, Jonathan Harlow Nov 2014

Preaching For Hire: Public Issues And Private Concerns In A Skirmish Of The Lamb's War, Jonathan Harlow

Quaker Studies

Quakers from the first rejected the idea of the professional minister requiring university education and being paid for his work. This was a principal motif in the Lamb's War they waged in the 1650s; and it naturally aroused the hostility of established ministers, who had good reason to feel insecure. This article examines a brief battle of books which took place in 1656 and 1657: Thomas Speed, a leading Bristol Quaker, fulminated against preaching for hire and three incumbent ministers countered his attacks. It turns out that the participants were known to each other and had personal axes to grind. …

Quaker Beliefs: Diverse Yet Distinctive, Rosamund Bourke Nov 2014

Quaker Beliefs: Diverse Yet Distinctive, Rosamund Bourke

Quaker Studies

The aim of the research was to obtain the views of Quakers about their beliefs. 166 members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) responded to a questionnaire about Quaker faith and practice. The respondents largely agreed with traditional Quaker beliefs. As might be expected from previous studies, a diversity of views was found and it was not possible to calculate an 'index of Quakerism'. Eighty percent were over the age of 50. Their attitudes to religion were probably formed before the changes in cultural values of the latter half of the twentieth century.

Experiencing The Ineffable, Joseph O'Brien Nov 2014

Experiencing The Ineffable, Joseph O'Brien

CrissCross

I can recall the first time I learned to take a fish off the hook after catching it. My grandfather and I were fishing in a river near my home in Connecticut, the sun shone off the yellow of a pumpkinseed sunfish's belly. After removing it from the hook, I put it in a five-gallon pail of water. Despite the clarity of the things I do recall, there are those elements of this memory that remain wholly inaccessible to me. I cannot remember whether it was late spring or early autumn, what color my rod was, or if there were …

Los Rugrats Y Don Quijote De La Mancha: La Perspectiva Diferente Entre La Realidad Y La Fantastía, Kylene Wolfe

CrissCross

Private Speech, Public Pain: The Power Of Women's Laments In Ancient Greek Poetry And Tragedy, Olivia Dunham Nov 2014

Private Speech, Public Pain: The Power Of Women's Laments In Ancient Greek Poetry And Tragedy, Olivia Dunham

CrissCross

Women’s discourse in Greek society has been traditionally controlled and restricted by strict sociocultural codes. Barred from participating in the exclusively male public political scene, women have developed another mode of expressing their concerns and opinions about the world around them-through performance of ritual laments. In these songs of mourning women are empowered through their pain to address publicly issues of social importance; the most successful performers skillfully weave sometimes abrasive, often persuasive, and always highly charged judicial and political language into their lament. Women use this medium of public mourning as a protected vehicle through which they pronounce moral …
