Review Of Wildlife Damage Management: Prevention, Problem Solving And Conflict Resolution, Travis L. Devault
Review Of Wildlife Damage Management: Prevention, Problem Solving And Conflict Resolution, Travis L. Devault
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Wildlife damage management (WDM) is more challenging than it might seem to the uninitiated. As any reader of Human–Wildlife Interactions knows, there is much more to WDM than trapping nuisance raccoons from attics and applying chemicals to ward off deer from ornamental plants. Although these issues are important (especially if it is your attic or landscaping), WDM also encompasses global problems, such as invasive species, wildlife diseases and zoonoses, wildlife–vehicle collisions, and conservation of rare species in human-dominated landscapes. Further, WDM rests on principles from ecology, physiology, animal behavior, human psychology, and economics, all of which must be understood and …

We are concerned that readers of the IOC paper will be confused and misled by the poorly referenced statements and frank (and sometimes dangerous) errors in the paper. The IOC authors should publish a correction of these and other errors noted. Broadening research of low energy availability in other groups, such as the male athlete, athletes of diverse ethnicities and the disabled athlete may help to advance science and may one day warrant introduction of a specific term for whatever serious clinical sequelae of energy deficiency may be discovered in future research on men.
Research on the “Female Athlete Triad” …

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a neuropathic pain condition that is characterized by vasomotor, sensory, sudomotor, and motor symptoms. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been successfully utilized for the treatment of pain refractory to conventional therapies. We present a case of a previously highly functioning 54-year-old female who developed a rarely reported case of idiopathic CRPS of the right ankle which spontaneously occurred four months after an uncomplicated anterior cervical disc fusion. This condition resulted in severe pain and functional impairment that was unresponsive to pharmacological management. The patient's rehabilitation was severely stymied by her excruciating pain. However, with …
From Rawls To Habermas: Towards A Theory Of Grounded Impartiality In Canadian Administrative Law, Laverne Jacobs
From Rawls To Habermas: Towards A Theory Of Grounded Impartiality In Canadian Administrative Law, Laverne Jacobs
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
At the same time that Canadian public law jurisprudence has grappled with some key cases on bias, a vibrant debate has also raged over the meaning and scope of the notion of impartiality within political and moral philosophy. Spurred by Rawls’ view of liberalism, and culminating in the theory of deliberative democracy, this debate evolved over a span of more than four decades. Yet this philosophical literature is rarely, if at all, referred to in the public law jurisprudence dealing with impartiality. This article asks whether the debates surrounding impartiality in political and moral philosophy and those in Canadian public …
The Role Of Translational Neuroscience In The Evidence-Based Practice Of Clinical Psychology, Anthony Beers
The Role Of Translational Neuroscience In The Evidence-Based Practice Of Clinical Psychology, Anthony Beers
University Honors Theses
Is the Information Age progressing to the Knowledge Overload Age? The presence of big data, complex systems, and vast knowledge networks can overwhelm a clinician’s capacity to sift through abundant research findings and theoretical models. Demand for economically-driven evidence-based practice and the ethics of incorporating continuing education place enormous demands on clinicians that are difficult to achieve effectively, efficiently, and ethically. Translational science is a research discipline focused specifically on the production of valid and reliable uses developed from scientific research findings. In the discussions on translational science, one controversial issue has been the role translational neuroscience plays in clinical …
Gender Complex Curriculum For The Portland Public School District: Proposal, Kathryn Hayes
Gender Complex Curriculum For The Portland Public School District: Proposal, Kathryn Hayes
University Honors Theses
GLSEN states that 43.9% of students felt unsafe in school to express their preferred gender in the year 2011. This lack of safety can be attributed to a variety of factors including peer harassment, harassment by teachers or staff, lack of support or resources, unintentionally offensive language in the classroom, and lack of gender variety in historical figures and role models. The first part of this project is an original gender-complex curriculum aimed at creating a safer space inside the classroom for elementary aged students who may identify or express as gender variant by encouraging these, and other supportive behaviors …
The Media’S Presentation Of The Second Chance Act: Funding For Reentry Following Prison, A Content Analysis, Ailene Joyce Farkac
The Media’S Presentation Of The Second Chance Act: Funding For Reentry Following Prison, A Content Analysis, Ailene Joyce Farkac
University Honors Theses
The US prison system has multiplied by four since 1980; each year about 730,000 people enter state and federal prisons and 700,000 people exit. As a result of this expansion, there is a massive increase of formerly incarcerated people reentering local communities every year. Budget cuts in prison programs and in local government’s social services are causing these individuals to be less educated and less prepared for reintegration; communities are also ill prepared to absorb them. The Second Chance Act was signed into law by President Bush on April 9, 2008. It authorized a pool of about $393m (renewed in …
The Changing Landscape Of Peer Aggression: A Literature Review On Cyberbullying And Interventions, Katie Davis, Justin Reich, Carrie James
The Changing Landscape Of Peer Aggression: A Literature Review On Cyberbullying And Interventions, Katie Davis, Justin Reich, Carrie James
Journal of Youth Development
While traditional forms of bullying have been steadily decreasing over the course of the last two decades, cyberbullying has emerged as a major concern among parents, teachers, and other professionals working with young people. Because cyberbullying is a relatively new phenomenon, its research base is not as well developed as research on traditional bullying. In this literature review, the authors synthesize current knowledge on cyberbullying’s prevalence among youth; its relationship to offline bullying; which youth are most likely to be perpetrators and victims; the negative effects of cyberbullying on victims; and the landscape of intervention efforts currently employed in the …

Youth Online Media Use: Associations With Youth Demographics, Parental Monitoring, And Parent-Child Relationships, Jessie Rudi, Jodi Dworkin
Journal of Youth Development
As online media has become an increasingly important part of youths’ daily lives, it is critical for the field to explore questions related to youth online media use in order to support youth workers, youth development practice and programming. Using a national sample of youth age 13-22 (N = 585), the current study explored demographic differences in youth online media use, and examined associations between youth demographics, parental monitoring, parent-child relationship quality, and likelihood of being a frequent user of online activities. Although youth reported being frequent users of online media, Internet use was not the same for all youth. …
Assessing Service Quality In Adventure Tourism, Prof. Antonie Bauer
Assessing Service Quality In Adventure Tourism, Prof. Antonie Bauer
Irish Business Journal
The purpose of this paper, which is based on a survey of activity providers in South West Ireland, is to assess the quality of adventure tourism offerings and to investigate which aspects of the experience contribute most to visitors’ perception of quality. In addition, it explores the validity of different methods for the assessment of service quality. A new importance weighted method is developed that avoids the inconsistencies of existing approaches and has higher predictive value than the other models for the Irish sample. A simple performance only approach is second best in explaining variation in overall perception of quality, …

Niche Markets In Irish Tourism: The Case Of North American Coach Tourists, Dr. Marie Ryan, Prof. Jim Deegan, Dr. Richard Moloney, Dr. William Sjostrom
Irish Business Journal
In 2010, 115,000 coach tourists came from North America to Ireland, averaging a length of stay of 9 nights. This paper applies factor analysis to a survey of North American coach tourists to Ireland (with 486 responses). It identifies the most significant factors that have common characteristics amongst the tourists. Factor analysis, although popular in tourism research, has never been applied to an inbound tourist market to Ireland, so this research fills an important gap in Irish segmentation research. The factor analysis of the survey identifies a number of important characteristics of this market. For example, the North American coach …

Host Behavior Alters Spiny Lobster-Viral Disease Dynamics: A Simulation Study, Thomas W. Dolan Iii, Mark J. Butler Iv, Jeffrey D. Shields
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Social behavior confers numerous benefits to animals but also risks, among them an increase in the spread of pathogenic diseases. We examined the trade-off between risk of predation and disease transmission under different scenarios of host spatial structure and disease avoidance behavior using a spatially explicit, individual-based model of the host pathogen interaction between juvenile Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) and Panulirus argus Virus 1 (PaV1). Spiny lobsters are normally social but modify their behavior to avoid diseased conspecifics, a potentially effective means of reducing transmission but one rarely observed in the wild. We found that without lobster avoidance of …

Identifying And Addressing Sources Of Measurement Error In The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire, Eileen Gigliotti, William Ellery Samuels, June Como, Tofiga Gamidova, Brian Gordon, Peter Acerios
Publications and Research
Background and Purpose: The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ) provides a rich portrait of one’s perceived social support including network size/composition and quality of support. Analyses of quantitative research reports and critiques of the NSSQ revealed non-negligible measurement error. We document evidence of measurement error, report potential sources of this error, and present forthcoming psychometric testing. Methods: Quantitative evidence of measurement error from the NSSQ literature provided the basis for initial hypotheses concerning sources of error in network nomination and support ratings. We then conducted cognitive interviews to investigate these hypotheses. Results: Cognitive interviews revealed evidence of respondents’ miscomprehension and …

Advertising Higher Education In Romania, Anca C. Micu, Madalina Moraru
WCBT Faculty Publications
Romania, a former communist country in Eastern Europe, saw the iron curtain lifted in 1989, and started at that time the transition to a free market economy. The past couple of decades encompass extraordinary changes in the economic structure and environment, with state monopolies being dissolved and private companies entering the market and competing in western manner. The Romanian conversion from central planning to a market-oriented economy provides a fascinating laboratory for research in economic theory and practice (Hefner and Woodward 1999). With the advent of a free market economy and a competitive environment, advertising exited its dormant communist stage …

Comparison Of Ground-To-Air Visibility Analysis Methods, Erica Pfister-Altschul
Comparison Of Ground-To-Air Visibility Analysis Methods, Erica Pfister-Altschul
Theses and Dissertations
When a disaster occurs, remotely sensed imagery is critical for emergency responders. Aircraft collect digital images of damaged areas to assist with damage assessment and response planning. Such airborne imagery can be transmitted directly from the plane to ground antennae and internet-connected dispersal, allowing for faster acquisition of data. However, air-to-ground transmission of images requires near-constant visibility between the aircraft transmitter and ground station antenna. This research uses GIS-based models to identify the ground station locations that can reliably receive data from aircraft, using a variety of visibility analysis methods and a comparison of their performance. A custom algorithm is …
An Evolutionary Perspective On Infectious And Chronic Disease, John Eberth
An Evolutionary Perspective On Infectious And Chronic Disease, John Eberth
Theses and Dissertations
The integration of evolutionary biology with traditional medicine can elucidate novel mechanisms of contemporary disease. Whereas the goal of traditional medicine is to treat and cure the proximate causes, evolutionary biology aims to understand the driving forces behind why humans are susceptible to disease. To form the basis of this hypothesis we postulate that modern man's current genetic information was programmed at a time, and in an environment, that is not relevant to today's human populations. The discordance between these genes of our ancestors and the environment of contemporary humans is thought to be a major reason for the increase …

Theses and Dissertations
Research in this study indicates that high levels of self-awareness as well as a clearly defined self-identity are related to increased levels of care and ethical decision making among counselors. An enhanced social-cognitive development of the counselor education graduate student is associated with an increased ability for them (in the future) to process legal and ethical dilemmas such as the right to die legislation and how it could affect them professionally. This study includes implications for counselors and the training and supervision of counselor education graduate students who may be affected by the right to die legislation and the way …
The Conscious Guitarist: Alexander Technique And Body Mapping For Guitarists, Alma Sehic
The Conscious Guitarist: Alexander Technique And Body Mapping For Guitarists, Alma Sehic
Theses and Dissertations
Musicians “move” for a living, yet many guitarists (among other instrumentalists) seem to be unaware of the quality of their movements in playing and teaching the instrument. This may simply be due to the lack of appropriate movement training and body awareness incorporated into current teaching practices, which leaves guitarists vulnerable to playing-related injuries, pain, and frustrating technical limitations. The purpose of this dissertation is to introduce somatic education into guitar pedagogy and performance, as a means of enhancing performing abilities and preventing injury.
After introducing the basis and principles of Alexander Technique and Body Mapping, the author provides practical …
Characterization Of The Hippocampal Acetylcholine System In A Rodent Model Of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Amy Elizabeth Perkins
Characterization Of The Hippocampal Acetylcholine System In A Rodent Model Of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Amy Elizabeth Perkins
Theses and Dissertations
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a major public health concern, as it is estimated that 2-5% of children are exposed to alcohol at some point during prenatal development. FASD have been shown to cause damage to multiple brain regions, but research shows that the hippocampus is especially sensitive to alcohol exposure. This damage to the hippocampus explains, in part, deficits in learning and memory that are hallmark symptoms of FASD. The acetylcholine neurotransmitter system plays a major role in learning and memory, and the hippocampus is one of its main targets. This experiment used a rodent model of Fetal …

Project Shine: A Family-Based Intervention For Improving Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, And Diet In African American Adolescents, Sara M. St. George
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effects of a family-based intervention for improving moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary behavior (SB), and fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake in African American adolescents. The intervention (Project SHINE: Supporting Health Interactively through Nutrition and Exercise) integrated Social Cognitive (SCT), Self Determination (SDT), and Family Systems Theories (FST) to improve healthy physical activity and dietary behaviors. Behavioral strategies from SCT (i.e., self-monitoring, goal-setting, self-regulatory skill-building), elements involved in facilitating intrinsic motivation for health behavior change from SDT (i.e., autonomy, competence, belongingness), and positive parenting practices from FST for integrating parent and peer systems (e.g., parental monitoring, parent-adolescent …

Testing Bidirectional Contextual Effects Of Adolescent Risk Factors On Young Adulthood Outcomes: A Life Course Perspective To Gangs, Andrea E. Lamont
Theses and Dissertations
Leading theories in developmental science emphasize the role of the individual as an active agent in shaping her or his environment. Yet, most empirical work has focused on unidirectional models, ultimately treating the individual as a passive recipient of environmental risk. Part of this gap between theory and analysis is methodological in nature – i.e., classical statistical methods typically do not allow for the modeling of bidirectional influences or complex longitudinal relations. Recent advancements in longitudinal methodologies, however, expand our ability to answer more nuanced developmental questions. In this dissertation, I demonstrate how advanced longitudinal methods could be used to …

A Systems Biology Approach To Detect Eqtls Associated With Mirna And Mrna Co-Expression Networks In The Nucleus Accumbens Of Chronic Alcoholic Patients, Mohammed Mamdani
Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol Dependence (AD) is a chronic substance use disorder with moderate heritability (60%). Linkage and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have implicated a number of loci; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying AD are unclear. Advances in systems biology allow genome-wide expression data to be integrated with genetic data to detect expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL), polymorphisms that regulate gene expression levels, influence phenotypes and are significantly enriched among validated genetic signals for many commonly studied traits including AD.
We integrated genome-wide mRNA and miRNA expression data with genotypic data from the nucleus accumbens (NAc), a major addiction-related brain region, of 36 …
Dr. Who?: The Science And Culture Of Medical Wear Design, Patricia Duignan
Dr. Who?: The Science And Culture Of Medical Wear Design, Patricia Duignan
Theses and Dissertations
The multi-million-dollar medical uniform industry has not utilized advancements in garment and textile technology that could positively impact the protection of healthcare professionals and patients. In most cases the uniforms meet basic requirements – they clothe the professional in a recognizable way. Little innovation in design, function and performance, has been applied to these garments. This is particularly evident in the case of the stereotypical white lab coat worn by many physicians, despite evidence indicating that these lab coats may carry contamination and play a role in the spread of deadly bacteria. Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) are among the most …
Theorizing When User Reaction To It Implementation Is Neither Resistance Nor Acceptance, But Constructive Behavior: A Case Study Of Healthcare It Implementation, Kaveh Mohajeri
Theses and Dissertations
The prevailing discourse of “resistance vs. acceptance” in IT implementation research mostly personalizes the issue as “users” versus IT implementers (e.g., managers, CIOs, CMIOs, etc.). This kind of discourse has created an IT-implementer-centric attitude among IS scholars and practitioners. The IT-implementer-centric attitude, while embraces “acceptance” as a desirable reaction almost unconditionally, frequently holds for minimizing or more conservatively suppressing “resistance” to IT implementation. In other words, the mainstream IT implementation research, almost completely, treats “users” as passive recipients whose choices, as they face pre-developed/pre-designed/pre-rolled-out technology being implemented, can only be defined on a spectrum from “acceptance” to “resistance.” The current …

Longitudinal Relations Between Peer Victimization And Delinquency: The Mediating Roles Of Sadness, Fear, And Anger, Lisa J. Ulmer
Theses and Dissertations
Peer victimization is a common occurrence among youth, and it has been linked to a number of negative outcomes, including delinquent behaviors (e.g., physical aggression, theft/property damage, and substance use). Several studies examined relations between peer victimization and delinquency, though few have done so longitudinally or examined whether negative emotions are underlying processes that explain associations between these constructs. The current study’s purpose is to examine whether several negative emotions (i.e., anger, fear, and sadness) mediate relations between several types of peer victimization and delinquency among middle and high school youths. The study’s sample of 318 youths was predominately African …
