Many professions, including medicine, engineering, and design, have embraced the notion of using research to making informed decisions, thus increasing client satisfaction. Called evidence based practice (EBP) in Athletic Training; the concept is viewed as a means to promote the profession, not only through improved patient care, but also through increasing the reputation of athletic trainers as cost-effective health care providers. Over the past two decades, EBP has become a common term and subject of study. Treating Objects Like Women: The Impact Of Terror Management And Objectification On The Perception Of Women's Faces, Christina Roylance Jan 2014

Treating Objects Like Women: The Impact Of Terror Management And Objectification On The Perception Of Women's Faces, Christina Roylance

Psychology

According to terror management theory, humans are threatened by the awareness of death and counter this threat by investing in cultural systems that make them feel like they are more than mortal animals. Based on this proposition, it has been argued that women's bodies pose a unique existential threat, as they remind humans of their similarity to other biological organisms. However, no research thus far has examined how death awareness impacts perceptual assessments of women. The current study examined the effect of heightened death-awareness on perceptions of women's faces, utilizing face-morphing techniques that create a range of artificial-to-real faces. Results …

A Forgiveness And Reconciliation Strategy To Bring Ethnic Harmony In The Nairobi East Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Timothy O. Guto

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Conflicts have affected the church of God in recent times. The Seventh-day Church in Kenya and especially after the 2007 and 2008 post-election violence was very negatively affected. Some members still cannot co-exist or enjoy Christian fellowship in the same congregation because of lack of forgiveness and reconciliation. Co-existence became difficult because church members fought each other and even destroyed homesteads belonging to rival tribal groups. Tarimo admits that "those churches that happen to be multiethnic with a national outlook are plagued with internal inter-ethnic conflicts" (2008, para. 4). Although conflict management has been done by the government including …

The project was implemented in the Barnesville Area Clinic …

Architecture And The Body: Integrating Fitness In The Modern Urban Center, Calvin Morey Jan 2014

Architecture And The Body: Integrating Fitness In The Modern Urban Center, Calvin Morey

Architecture Theses

History reveals the human body in a way that differs greatly from today’s understanding. Through the artefacts of ancient architectural constructs, art, and literature we can see that the body was once articulated as an integral part to the world as a body of perception. It was and still is the case that through our bodies we are able to sensually touch and translate the world into thought, imagination and dreams. Our environments and their ability to shape our movements through them have an immense impact on how we come in contact with one another, perceive ourselves, and engage our …

Factors Associated With Collaboration In Disaster Response, Stanley Allan Carignan Jan 2014

Factors Associated With Collaboration In Disaster Response, Stanley Allan Carignan

Emergency Management

This paper explores the factors the literature suggests help organizations collaborate during disaster response. The nature of disasters requires that people and organizations collaborate; yet, collaboration has been frequently identified as a problem by policymakers and researchers alike. It would be of value to policymakers and researchers if there was an understanding of the factors that contribute to collaboration. The paper attempted to address this issue. It identifies four categories of variables that the literature suggests lead to inter-organizational collaboration including leadership, relationships, culture, and inter-dependency. The paper also suggests how understanding of these factors might be applied in practice, …

Age And Gender Differences In Decision-Making Style Profiles, Rebecca K. Delaney Jan 2014

Age And Gender Differences In Decision-Making Style Profiles, Rebecca K. Delaney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The current study examined Scott and Bruce's (1995) five decision-making styles (i.e. rational, intuitive, spontaneous, dependent, and avoidant) to assess potential combinations of styles using cluster analysis. The sample comprised 1,075 members from RAND's American Life Panel (56.2% female, 18-93 years, Mage = 53.49). Data was collected from a larger survey that members completed on a monthly basis. Findings yielded a three-cluster model which included: affective/experiential, dependent, and independent/self-controlled decision-making style profiles. These profiles were significantly differentiated by age and gender. Older age and being female was associated with being more likely to be in the independent/self-controlled decision-making style profile …

It will address the social and emotional well-being of the occupants through the design of architecture. In short, refinement is the key to stability, and we must help those in need to become able to …

The Nature Of Happiness, Alexander Carlson Jan 2014

The Nature Of Happiness, Alexander Carlson

Architecture Theses

Designed as a 384,300 SF urban mixed-use community Node and placed in Minneapolis, MN this thesis attempts to show how architectural design may respond to the overwhelming pollution, poor quality of life and mass urban sprawl produced by today’s urban environment? Nature has given us the basic building blocks to create more harmonious environments for ourselves. If we apply what we observe from nature into our own urban environments we have an opportunity to reduce urban sprawl, reduce stress on infrastructure, reduce overall pollution, and increase the quality of life for ourselves and our community.

Choice Between Reinforcers With And Without Delayed Shock, Aaron D. Dumas Jan 2014

Choice Between Reinforcers With And Without Delayed Shock, Aaron D. Dumas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Some problematic human behaviors can be conceptualized as choice of a large immediate reinforcer followed by a delayed aversive event, in lieu of a small immediate reinforcer and no delayed aversive event. For example, a night of binge drinking may result in ample social reinforcers and other fun in the short-term, but it is followed the next day by an intense hangover. Alternatively, opting for moderate alcohol consumption might not produce as intensely pleasing of an evening, but it avoids the aversive hangover. The aim of the present experiment was to develop an animal laboratory model for studying such choice …

Affect And Overconfidence: A Laboratory Investigation, John Ifcher, Homa Zarghamee Jan 2014

Affect And Overconfidence: A Laboratory Investigation, John Ifcher, Homa Zarghamee

Economics

We conduct two incentivized random-assignment experiments to investigate whether overconfidence is impacted by (1) incidental mild positive affect, or (2) incidental mild negative affects-anger, fear, and sadness. We measure overconfidence using overestimation of past quiz-performance and overestimation of past quiz-performance compared to peers. The results of the first experiment indicate that the effect of positive affect on both measures of overconfidence is positive and significant for male subjects. While mood-inducement is equally successful for female subjects, their overconfidence is unaffected by positive affect. These positive-affect results are robust to various specification checks. In the second experiment, we find consistent evidence …
