Dove V. Parham: Desegregation In The Dollarway School District, Kevin Sinclair Nov 2014

Dove V. Parham: Desegregation In The Dollarway School District, Kevin Sinclair

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the Dove v. Parham school desegregation case that was heard on December 16, 1959, in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Arkansas, Western Division with Judge J. Smith Henley presiding. Attorney George Howard Jr. had brought forth the lawsuit on behalf of three African American students who were denied transfer to the all-white Dollarway School District. The tactic of massive resistance had failed to stop any integration attempts in the state and was replaced by minimal compliance. The Dollarway School District chose to use pupil placement laws to avoid integration. By using transcripts from the …

Alternative Approaches To Correction Of Malapropisms In Aiml Based Conversational Agents, Walter A. Brock Nov 2014

Alternative Approaches To Correction Of Malapropisms In Aiml Based Conversational Agents, Walter A. Brock

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The use of Conversational Agents (CAs) utilizing Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) has been studied in a number of disciplines. Previous research has shown a great deal of promise. It has also documented significant limitations in the abilities of these CAs. Many of these limitations are related specifically to the method employed by AIML to resolve ambiguities in the meaning and context of words. While methods exist to detect and correct common errors in spelling and grammar of sentences and queries submitted by a user, one class of input error that is particularly difficult to detect and correct is the …

Factors Impacting Information Security Noncompliance When Completing Job Tasks, Martha Nanette Harrell Nov 2014

Factors Impacting Information Security Noncompliance When Completing Job Tasks, Martha Nanette Harrell

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Work systems are comprised of the technical and social systems that should harmoniously work together to ensure a successful attainment of organizational goals and objectives. Information security controls are often designed to protect the information system and seldom consider the work system design. Using a positivist case study, this research examines the user's perception of having to choose between completing job tasks or remaining compliant with information security controls. An understanding of this phenomenon can help mitigate the risk associated with an information system security user's choice. Most previous research fails to consider the work system perspective on this issue. …

Paintings: Perceptions Of Ordinary Moments, Laura Brainard Raborn Nov 2014

Paintings: Perceptions Of Ordinary Moments, Laura Brainard Raborn

Theses and Dissertations

By depicting the human figure in ordinary moments, I highlight mundane, yet important, actions in daily life. In order to captivate the viewer, I use specific formal elements: abstraction that contrasts areas of representation, evidence of drawn line, a variety of high contrasts, and repetition of forms. I also use a layering technique to obscure or reveal information selectively. These formal elements are employed to compel the viewer to thoughtfully question and consider the presented figure. This body of work was inspired by my ideas about social norms and modern culture. Contemporary painters such as Eric Fischl and Jenny Saville …

Re-Examining The Roles Of Landpower In The 21st Century And Their Implications, William T. Johnsen Dr. Nov 2014

Re-Examining The Roles Of Landpower In The 21st Century And Their Implications, William T. Johnsen Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

View the Executive Summary

After 13 years of prolonged ground combat, a weary American public is leery of further interventions requiring land forces. Shifting geostrategic conditions, such as a revanchist Russia and a rising China, reinforce this reluctance. At the same time, technological innovation once more offers the chimera of war from a distance that does not endanger land forces. Nonetheless, at some point, a highly volatile international security environment will place U.S. national interests at risk, requiring the use of military power. Given the increasing rise of interdependence among all components of military power (air, cyberspace, land, sea, and …

Raped By The System: A Comparison Of Prison Rape In The United States And South Africa, Alexandra Ashmont

Pace International Law Review

The main objective of this article is to create overall awareness and to give people a real sense of the events that go on every day inside prison walls. The article is meant to show people that the way they think about prison and prison rape specifically is severely jaded. What happens behind prison bars should certainly not stay behind prison bars. The stories within this article are unlike any prison rape stories people have heard before. They are harsh, inhumane, and deeply disturbing. The only way to incite change is to open people’s eyes to the true conditions within …

Pioneering African American Teachers Of Singing, Carl Franklin Du Pont Jr. Nov 2014

Pioneering African American Teachers Of Singing, Carl Franklin Du Pont Jr.

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this essay is to identify the first African American teachers to join the faculties of prestigious predominately white institutions in the 1960s and 1970s. In order to accomplish this, sources on African American musicians were examined, university archivists were consulted, and interviews were conducted. While many singing teachers helped pave the way, Sylvia Olden Lee, Willis Patterson, and Camilla Williams were found to be the first African American voice teachers to establish themselves as instructors in the highest-ranked vocal programs of the United States; as such, the focus of this essay is on those three pedagogues. The …

The Effect Of Music Listening On Cold-Pressor Pain Perception, Tolerance, And Attention, Marlen I. Rodriguez-Wolfe Nov 2014

The Effect Of Music Listening On Cold-Pressor Pain Perception, Tolerance, And Attention, Marlen I. Rodriguez-Wolfe

Open Access Theses

The effect of participant-selected music listening on pain perception, pain tolerance, and attention to pain was evaluated during a cold-pressor pain protocol. Participants (N=50) underwent two, ice-water hand immersions in a music condition and a silence condition. Participants were asked to engage in active music listening of their choice during the cold-pressor music condition. The researcher collected a pain tolerance hand-immersion time, while participants self-reported on pain perception and attention to pain. Results showed that participants reported significantly less pain perception and attention to pain, and greater pain tolerance time under the music condition than in the silence condition. The …

Egalitarianism And Animals, Oscar Horta Nov 2014

Egalitarianism And Animals, Oscar Horta

Between the Species

The moral consideration of nonhuman animals and the critique of speciesism have been defended by appeal to a variety of ethical theories. One of the main approaches in moral and political philosophy today from which to launch such a defense is egalitarianism, which is the view that we should aim at favoring the worse off by reducing inequality. This paper explains what egalitarianism is and shows the important practical consequences it has for nonhuman animals, both those that are exploited by humans and those in need of aid in the wild. Egalitarianism implies rejecting speciesism, and in practice it prescribes …
