Introduction •The leading cause of hospitalization in the United States is heart failure among adults 65 years of age. •One million patients are hospitalized every year with a primary diagnosis of heart failure, resulting in a Medicare expenditure exceeding $17 billion. •For every five patients admitted to a hospital with congestive heart failure (CHF), one patient will be readmitted within 30 days of discharge . •75 percent of early heart failure readmissions are preventable. •Medicare introduced the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program that became effective in 2012. • This program established financial penalties for greater than expected readmissions for primary diagnoses …

Streptococcus pneumoniae, an inhabitant of the upper respiratory mucosa, causes respiratory and invasive infections as well as conjunctivitis. Strains that lack the capsule, a main virulence factor and the target of current vaccines, are often isolated from conjunctivitis cases. Here we perform a comparative genomic analysis of 271 strains of conjunctivitis-causing S. pneumoniae from 72 postal codes in the United States. We find that the vast majority of conjunctivitis strains are members of a distinct cluster of closely related unencapsulated strains. These strains possess divergent forms of pneumococcal virulence factors (such as CbpA and neuraminidases) that are not shared with …

Freeze Dried Blueberry Powder Fortification Improves The Quality Of Gluten Free Snacks, Sikha Bhaduri, Khursheed Navder
Publications and Research
Since Quinoa flour is an excellent source of natural antioxidant compounds and blueberries are rich in polyphenolic anthocyanins, this study was undertaken to improve and evaluate the quality of two blueberry powder fortified gluten free products, muffins and cookies. Control products were made with 100% Rice flour and Rice flour was replaced by 50% and 100% Quinoa flour to prepare muffin and cookies. 10% freeze dried Blueberry powder was used for fortification. Effect of flour replacements and Blueberry fortification on moisture content, water activity, antioxidant value, shelf life, sensory quality and textural properties were studied. Blueberry fortification improved the shelf …
Development Of A Reusable Nutrient Recovery System To Sustainably Integrate Small-Scale Sanitation And Agriculture, Jorge Luis Calabria
Development Of A Reusable Nutrient Recovery System To Sustainably Integrate Small-Scale Sanitation And Agriculture, Jorge Luis Calabria
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Emerging technologies in sanitation and food production foster the potential to advance progress towards key sustainable development goals of ensuring adequate sanitation and food security to all. Non-Sewered Sanitation Systems (NSSSs), as detailed by the recent International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) 30500 standard, are being developed to overcome challenges of lacking sanitation infrastructure and resource scarcity by providing autonomous, off-grid wastewater treatment (WWT) service in a much smaller footprints than large centralized treatment facilities. A promising NSSS platform is the anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) that can achieve high (WWT) throughput in a small footprint using ultrafiltration (UF) membrane filtration to …

Method And Composition For Modulating Canonical Wnt Pathway Using Folate And Inositol, Kersti K. Linask
Method And Composition For Modulating Canonical Wnt Pathway Using Folate And Inositol, Kersti K. Linask
USF Patents
The canonical Wnt signaling pathway is implicated in many disorders including neural tube defects, limb malformations, and heart defects, developmental disorders associated with alcohol exposure (fetal alcohol syndrome) or exposure to bipolar medications (i.e. lithium), wound healing, and Alzheimer's disease. Elevated plasma homocysteine (HCy), which results from folate (folic acid, FA) deficiency, the mood-stabilizing drug lithium (Li), and alcohol (ethanol) are linked to the induction of human congenital heart and neural tube defects. FA supplementation ameliorates the observed developmental errors in the Li-HCy, or alcohol-exposed mouse embryos and normalized heart function. Li, HCy or Wnt3A suppress Wnt-modulated Hex and Islet-1 …

Effective integration in science and knowledge co-production is a challenge that crosses research boundaries, climate regions, languages and cultures. Early career scientists are crucial in the identification of, and engagement with, obstacles and opportunities in the development of innovative solutions to complex and interconnected problems. On 25-31 May 2014, International Council for Science and International Social Science Council, in collaboration with the International Network of Next-Generation Ecologists and Institute for New Economic Thinking: Young Scholars Initiative, assembled a group of early career researchers with diverse backgrounds and research perspectives to reflect on and debate relevant issues around ecosystems and human …

Journal of the Patent and Trademark Office Society
This article sheds new light on patent signals by building and analyzing a data set of patent-focused press releases generated by patent holders and cataloging the subject matter contained therein. It offers a taxonomy of patent-focused PR content and calculates the relative proportions of patent PR relating to the categories of Prosecution; Litigation; Transaction; Post-Grant Procedure; Honors/Accolades; Patented or Patent-Pending Product; ANDA Patent Challenge; and Miscellaneous. Within these top-level categories, this study calculates the relative proportion of second-level subject matter categories. In the Prosecution category, for example, this study calculates the proportion of press releases involving the categories of Patent …

A Pilot Study On The Use Of Lecture Tools To Enhance The Teaching Of Pharmacokinetics And Pharmacodynamics, Hollie I. Swanson, Michael T. Piascik
A Pilot Study On The Use Of Lecture Tools To Enhance The Teaching Of Pharmacokinetics And Pharmacodynamics, Hollie I. Swanson, Michael T. Piascik
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are essential topics contained within the medical curriculum and are highly amenable to active-learning approaches. In this pilot study, we incorporated Lecture Tools, a cloud-based audience response system, into a lecture-based graduate course. Lecture Tools was used by both the instructors and the students during peer presentations. Advantages noted by the instructors include the versatility of the questions that can be presented and the ease with which student assessment can be conducted. Student surveys revealed that, overall, the use of Lecture Tools enhanced student attentiveness and engagement and facilitated student participation in questions and answers. Some disadvantages …
