Daily Activity Budgets Reveal A Quasi-Flightless Stage During Non-Breeding In Hawaiian Albatrosses, Sarah Gutowsky, Lee Gutowsky, Ian Jonsen, Marty Leonard, Maura Naughton, Marc Romano, Scott A. Shaffer Nov 2014

Daily Activity Budgets Reveal A Quasi-Flightless Stage During Non-Breeding In Hawaiian Albatrosses, Sarah Gutowsky, Lee Gutowsky, Ian Jonsen, Marty Leonard, Maura Naughton, Marc Romano, Scott A. Shaffer

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Background Animals adjust activity budgets as competing demands for limited time and energy shift across life history phases. For far-ranging migrants and especially pelagic seabirds, activity during breeding and migration are generally well studied but the “overwinter” phase of non-breeding has received less attention. Yet this is a critical time for recovery from breeding, plumage replacement and gaining energy stores for return migration and the next breeding attempt. We aimed to identify patterns in daily activity budgets (i.e. time in flight, floating on the water’s surface and active foraging) and associated spatial distributions during overwinter for the laysan Phoebastria immutabilis …

The Effect Of Poor Maternal Nutrition On The Growth And Development Of Offspring, Maria L. Hoffman Nov 2014

The Effect Of Poor Maternal Nutrition On The Growth And Development Of Offspring, Maria L. Hoffman

Doctoral Dissertations

Poor maternal nutrition can have long lasting detrimental effects on offspring growth and development. Specifically, these offspring will exhibit increased carcass adiposity, reduced muscularity and altered growth rates resulting in animals that are less productive and yield a less desirable product for consumers. However, the mechanisms by which poor maternal nutrition alters offspring growth and development are not well understood. We hypothesized that maternal under- and over-nutrition will alter the expression of key genes and novel pathways involved in the development of muscle and adipose tissue of lambs at two early postnatal time points. To evaluate these hypotheses, pregnant sheep …

Glucose Significantly Enhances Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli Adherence To Intestinal Epithelial Cells Through Its Effects On Heat-Labile Enterotoxin Production, Prageeth Wijemanne, Rodney A. Moxley Nov 2014

Glucose Significantly Enhances Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli Adherence To Intestinal Epithelial Cells Through Its Effects On Heat-Labile Enterotoxin Production, Prageeth Wijemanne, Rodney A. Moxley

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The present study tested whether exposure of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) to glucose at different concentrations in the media results in increased bacterial adherence to host cells through increased heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) production, thereby suggesting the effects are physiological. Porcine-origin ETEC strains grown in Casamino acid yeast extract medium containing different concentrations of glucose were washed and inoculated onto IPEC-J2 porcine intestinal epithelial cells to test for effects on adherence and host cell cAMP concentrations. Consistent with previous studies, all LT+ strains had higher ETEC adherence to IPEC-J2 cells than did LT2 strains. Adherence of the LT2 but not the …

Manifestations And Implications Of Uncertainty For Improving Healthcare Systems: An Analysis Of Observational And Interventional Studies Grounded In Complexity Science, Kurt C. Stange Nov 2014

Manifestations And Implications Of Uncertainty For Improving Healthcare Systems: An Analysis Of Observational And Interventional Studies Grounded In Complexity Science, Kurt C. Stange

Faculty Scholarship

BACKGROUND: The application of complexity science to understanding healthcare system improvement highlights the need to consider interdependencies within the system. One important aspect of the interdependencies in healthcare delivery systems is how individuals relate to each other. However, results from our observational and interventional studies focusing on relationships to understand and improve outcomes in a variety of healthcare settings have been inconsistent. We sought to better understand and explain these inconsistencies by analyzing our findings across studies and building new theory.METHODS: We analyzed eight observational and interventional studies in which our author team was involved as the basis of our …

Body Composition Changes Associated With Fasted Versus Non-Fasted Aerobic Exercise, Brad Jon Schoenfeld, Alan Albert Aragon, Colin D. Wilborn, James W. Krieger, Gul T. Sonmez

Publications and Research

It has been hypothesized that performing aerobic exercise after an overnight fast accelerates the loss of body fat. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in fat mass and fat-free mass following four weeks of volume-equated fasted versus fed aerobic exercise in young women adhering to a hypocaloric diet. Twenty healthy young female volunteers were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 experimental groups: a fasted training (FASTED) group that performed exercise after an overnight fast (n = 10) or a post-prandial training (FED) group that consumed a meal prior to exercise (n = 10). Training consisted of 1 …

The Bacterial Pathogen Yersinia Creates A Complex Structure On The Surface Of Macrophages, Wael Bahnan Nov 2014

The Bacterial Pathogen Yersinia Creates A Complex Structure On The Surface Of Macrophages, Wael Bahnan

Open Access Dissertations

During an infectious process, bacterial pathogens interact with host innate immune cells. These innate cells (primarily macrophages) play a major role in the antimicrobial defense and bacterial clearance. In this work, we identify the niche which Yersinia pseudotuberculosis creates during macrophage contact. We show that the pYV virulence plasmid is essential for the ability of the bacterium to create an acidified, partially enclosed, and durable niche along the macrophage surface. These compartments are uncoupled from the normal host cell endocytic trafficking pathway and are exposed to the extracellular medium. We present data which shows that the formation of the Yersinia …

Knowledge And Perception Of Coronary Artery Disease In High-Risk Women, Summer Kottsick

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in America and kills more women each year than all other cancers combined. While women’s level of awareness of heart disease has increased, they often do not perceive their risk of heart disease accurately, nor do they understand the importance of adopting heart-healthy behaviors to reduce risk. Objective: By implementing a combination of counseling from a health care provider and computer-based tailored education, this project aimed to test the effectiveness of using the Go Red for Women™ Heart CheckUp as an educational intervention for high-risk women to increase the …

Purpose: Reversing obesity is an urgent public health need for children: worldwide, in 2011 more than 40 million children under the age of five were overweight 1. Increasing intensity and duration of physical activity (PA) is a strategy to aid in preventing and reducing obesity. According to limited available research, PA in kindergarten children is decreasing below recommended guidelines and sedentary behavior is increasing 2; the potential to change the obesity trajectory, however, is greater in early childhood when healthy behaviors are 'imprinted' and entrenched 3. More than 11,207,000 children in the United …

Purpose: Pressure injury is known to cause not only debilitating physical effects, but also leads to substantial psychological and financial burdens. Given the importance of this issue, it remains imperative that nurses identify patients that are at risk of developing pressure injury, so that preventive interventions can be initiated early. Risk assessment tools are used to assist nurses in identifying such patients. However, research has suggested that using risk assessment tools may be no more effective in preventing actual pressure injury than clinical judgement. Research has also suggested impaired mobility is a significant …
