Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the use of Theranekron alone or in combination with intramammary antibiotic therapy for the treatment of subclinical and clinical mastitis on the recovery rate from mastitis. The study material was composed of 177 mammary lobes of 63 Holstein cows with subclinical (groups S1 and S2) and clinical mastitis (groups C1, C2, C3, and C4). In all of the treatment groups, excluding group S2, the California mastitis test scores were determined to have decreased after treatment (P < 0.05). In groups C1, C2, C3, and C4, which were treated for clinical mastitis, the somatic cell count (SCC) values were observed to have decreased. The decrease in SCC values was statistically significant except in group C2 (P < 0.01). While the SCC values were observed to have decreased in group S1 (P > 0.05), which was treated with Theranekron alone, the same values were found to …

The Performance Puzzle: Understanding The Factors Influencing Alternative Dimensions And Views Of Performance, Anna A. Amirkhanyan, Hyun Joon Kim, Kristina T. Lambright Jan 2014

The Performance Puzzle: Understanding The Factors Influencing Alternative Dimensions And Views Of Performance, Anna A. Amirkhanyan, Hyun Joon Kim, Kristina T. Lambright

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

There is a large literature on the determinants of organizational performance, and its multidimensional nature is well recognized. However, little research has examined how different organizational and environmental factors influence different stakeholders’ performance assessments of the same service. We address this gap by comparing the factors influencing performance evaluations by different constituencies of child care centers in Ohio. We operationalize performance using (1) regulatory violations documented during state licensing inspections, (2) satisfaction with the center’s quality reported by center directors, (3) satisfaction with the center’s quality reported by teachers, and (4) satisfaction with care quality reported by parents. Our findings …

Response Of Fusarium Thapsinum To Sorghum Brown Midrib Lines And To Phenolic Metabolites, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, Scott E. Sattler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen Jan 2014

Response Of Fusarium Thapsinum To Sorghum Brown Midrib Lines And To Phenolic Metabolites, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, Scott E. Sattler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Sorghum lines were bred for reduced lignin for cellulosic bioenergy uses, through the incorporation of brown midrib (bmr)6 or -12 into two backgrounds (RTx430 and Wheatland) as either single or doublemutant lines. When these lines were assessed for resistance to Fusarium thapsinum stalk rot, a cause of lodging, they were as resistant to F. thapsinum as the near-isogenic wild type. Peduncles of newly identified bmr lines from an ethyl-methanesulfonate-mutagenized population, inoculated with F. thapsinum, were as resistant as the wild-type line, BTx623. One bmr line (1107) had significantly smaller mean lesion lengths than BTx623, suggesting that a mutation …

Consuming Fire Ants Reduces Northern Bobwhite Survival And Weight Gain, P. Evans Myers, Craig R. Allen, Hannah E. Birge Jan 2014

Consuming Fire Ants Reduces Northern Bobwhite Survival And Weight Gain, P. Evans Myers, Craig R. Allen, Hannah E. Birge

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Northern bobwhite quail, Colinus virginianus (L.) (Galliformes: Odontophoridae), population declines are well documented, but pinpointing the reasons for these decreases has proven elusive. Bobwhite population declines are attributed primarily to loss of habitat and land use changes. This, however, does not entirely explain population declines in areas intensively managed for bobwhites. Although previous research demonstrates the negative impact of red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) on northern bobwhites, the mechanisms underlying this effect are largely unknown. To meet the protein demands of early growth and development, bobwhite chicks predominantly consume small insects, of which ants are …

Spring Migration Ecology Of The Mid-Continent Sandhill Crane Population With An Emphasis On Use Of The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, Gary L. Krapu, David A. Brandt, Paul J. Kinzel, Aaron T. Pearse Jan 2014

Spring Migration Ecology Of The Mid-Continent Sandhill Crane Population With An Emphasis On Use Of The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, Gary L. Krapu, David A. Brandt, Paul J. Kinzel, Aaron T. Pearse

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We conducted a 10-year study (1998–2007) of the Mid-Continent Population (MCP) of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) to identify spring-migration corridors, locations of major stopovers, and migration chronology by crane breeding affiliation (western Alaska–Siberia [WA–S], northern Canada–Nunavut [NC–N], west-central Canada–Alaska [WC–A], and east-central Canada–Minnesota [EC–M]). In the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) of Nebraska, we evaluated factors influencing staging chronology, food habits, fat storage, and habitat use of sandhill cranes. We compared our findings to results from the Platte River Ecology Study conducted during 1978–1980. We determined spring migration corridors used by the breeding affiliations (designated subpopulations for management …

Modelling The Effects Of Natural Antimicrobials As Food Preservatives, Amit Jaiswal, Swarna Jaiswal Jan 2014

Modelling The Effects Of Natural Antimicrobials As Food Preservatives, Amit Jaiswal, Swarna Jaiswal

Books/Book Chapters/ Proceedings

A predictive food microbiological model is a mathematical representation of mechanisms that describes the growth, survival, inactivation or biochemical process of an organism and are used in the food industry to predict food pathogen growth and to help in the evaluation of food safety. Furthermore, it reduces the number of expensive and time-consuming experiments; however, adequate statistical analysis is a crucial step during all phases of model development and validation. Therefore, the present chapter is focused on the basic concept of mathematical modelling which can be applied to estimate the effects of natural antimicrobials as food preservatives. Initial section discusses …

Work Stress, Meaning, And Values: A Study Of Intellectual Disability Support Staff, Jennifer Marie Ladner-Graham Jan 2014

Work Stress, Meaning, And Values: A Study Of Intellectual Disability Support Staff, Jennifer Marie Ladner-Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Employees who work with individuals with intellectual disabilities report high levels of work-related stress. Staff stress is associated with a variety of negative outcomes, such as poor psychological health, job burnout, and high turnover rates. The current study investigated the relationship between staff stress and negative outcomes. Specifically, this study examined whether positive psychology concepts such as perceived meaning in life and values moderated the relationship between staff stress and poor psychological health, job search/intention to leave the job, and use of sick leave. Participants included staff members from an inpatient facility for people with intellectual disabilities located in North …

Toward A Conceptualization Of Emetophobia: Examining Intolerance Of Uncertainty As A Unique Predictor Of Symptoms, Mimi Zhao Jan 2014

Toward A Conceptualization Of Emetophobia: Examining Intolerance Of Uncertainty As A Unique Predictor Of Symptoms, Mimi Zhao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Emetophobia, a poorly understood disorder, is a specific phobia characterized by an irrational and persistent fear of oneself vomiting or others vomiting. Though research on the disorder is sparse, previous investigations have reported interference in social, occupational, and health domains in the lives of individuals with emetophobia (Lipsitz et al., 2001; McFayden & Wyness, 1983; Veale & Lambrou, 2006). To this end, the current study examined whether individual differences in Anxiety Sensitivity (AS), Disgust Sensitivity (DS), and Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) are associated with symptoms of emetophobia, whether AS predicts symptoms of emetophobia above and beyond DS, IU, and expected …

I Am See-Through: Participatory Video Making As A Method For Social Change In The Mississippi Delta, Paige Prather Jan 2014

I Am See-Through: Participatory Video Making As A Method For Social Change In The Mississippi Delta, Paige Prather

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces my application of critical participatory video scholarship to the development of a teen video documentary course that I facilitated during my graduate school tenure at the Tutwiler Community Education Center in the Mississippi Delta. Since at least the 1960s, documentarians have utilized participatory video methodologies as a way to tackle social issues through a ground-up approach in which community members play a vital role in the production of documentary projects. The development and application of participatory video varies greatly across disciplines including radical documentary filmmaking, visual studies, developmental studies, and emerging social media studies. Over the years, …

Can Student-Driven Changes Increase Salad Bar Usage In Schools?, Shannon Leeke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing student salad bar participation may increase students' consumption of fruits and vegetables while decreasing their risk of chronic disease. This study observed student perception, experience, and participation of the school salad bar in two northwest Mississippi high schools. The subjects were students' age 15-18 years old. One school served as the control variable and one served as the intervention variable. A three-week baseline of salad bar participation was collected before surveying students at the intervention school. Surveying student perception and experience of the salad bar provided data to implement changes to the salad bar. Student perception and experience was …
