Trust-Based Relational Intervention (Tbri) For Adopted Children Receiving Therapy In An Outpatient Setting, Lauren E. Nielsen Jan 2014

Trust-Based Relational Intervention (Tbri) For Adopted Children Receiving Therapy In An Outpatient Setting, Lauren E. Nielsen

Honors Projects

We explored the relationship between Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) and treatment outcomes for adopted children participating in treatment services through the Adoption Preservation Program at a Midwest child welfare organization. Adopted children who have trauma histories may have their adoptions disrupted if they do not receive the proper therapy to improve their overall functioning (Purvis, Cross, & Pennings, 2009; Davis, 1 999). We investigated a new intervention, TBRI, and its potential impact on children with trauma histories who are receiving outpatient therapy at a local child welfare center. Specifically, we examined whether family functioning and child functioning are improved after …

Evidence-Based Practice In Action: Ensuring Quality Of Pediatric Assessment Frequency, Katelyn Mcdonald Jan 2014

Evidence-Based Practice In Action: Ensuring Quality Of Pediatric Assessment Frequency, Katelyn Mcdonald

Honors Projects

Optimal head to toe assessment frequency in hospitalized pediatric patients is unknown. Although pediatric patients have many accommodations based on their age, developmental state, and varied needs, healthcare professionals have not published any research regarding the optimal frequency for registered nurses to perform head-to-toe assessments in hospitalized pediatric patients. Healthcare professionals must make decisions based on evidence-based practice. A change in pediatric assessment intervals was proposed at a Midwestern regional medical center. The purpose of this pilot study was to ensure patient safety and staff satisfaction following a policy change in head-to-toe assessment frequency Chart audits were performed on all …

The Role Of Early Intervention Programs On Reducing The Negative Effects Of Poverty, Jenna Kanegawa Jan 2014

The Role Of Early Intervention Programs On Reducing The Negative Effects Of Poverty, Jenna Kanegawa

CMC Senior Theses

Children under the age of 18 are the largest age group of people who live in poverty in America. This paper focuses on early intervention programs and how they can help ameliorate the negative effects of poverty. Previous research has demonstrated the negative effects of poverty, such as lower academic performance and achievement and more behavioral problems. Various risk factors for poverty, such as single parents, low maternal education, and lack of resources, and their role in the design of early intervention programs will be explained. The Perry Preschool Project (PPP), Head Start, the Chicago Child-Parent Center (CPC) Program, and …

Teaching Family Policy: Macro Societal Trends In Family Life, Leaanne Derigne

Florida Public Health Review

Students in many different fields will inevitably work with families in their professional practices. Successful practice must incorporate an understanding of macro societal trends that impact family life. A course such as Family Policy will train clinical social workers, nurses, educators, public administrators, and many others to understand the larger social systems that may be causing problems for their clients and patients. It will also provide students with an understanding of the key policies that need to be reformed or passed in order to better support families. This article presents techniques for teaching a dynamic course on family policy including …

Plates And Dietary Advice: A Current Trend In Nutrition Education Messaging For The Public, Judy E. Perkin, Claudia Sealey-Potts, Rachel Hochwald

Florida Public Health Review

Numerous dietary advice plate icons are currently being promoted in the United States. These icons are based on scientific studies related to diet and the prevention or treatment of chronic diseases. Icons also have been targeted to specific populations related to age, ethnicity, eating preferences, and level of physical activity. Plate icons currently being advocated stress the importance of portion size and the desirability of fruit and vegetable consumption while giving other types of advice as well. The multiplicity of icons may enable more individually tailored dietary advice but may also be confusing for the public. This paper reviews 16 …

Perceived Susceptibility And Prevention Attitudes Of African-American College Students’ Toward Type 2 Diabetes, Chauneva Glenn Jones, Torhonda C. Lee, Ivette A. López

Florida Public Health Review

Whereas type 2 diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the general United States, it is the fourth leading cause of death for African Americans. This health disparity remains a serious and costly public health issue. This study investigated the type 2 diabetes preventive behaviors and intentions among 130 African-American college students. Data collection for this cross-sectional study included administration of a 23-item survey that measured knowledge, attitudes, perceived susceptibility, and social norms. We found that only 19% of the respondents perceived themselves at risk for developing diabetes. Students who had been told by a health professional that …

Lessons Learned: Methods Used To Recruit Rural Latinos For A Health Awareness Study, Alex Ortiz

Florida Public Health Review

The growth of the nation’s Latino population in rural areas may provide challenges for investigators seeking to recruit a diverse participant pool for use in survey and focus group research. This paper presents a case study that describes the successful recruitment of rural Latinos as part of a multidisciplinary health awareness project that targeted adolescent Latinos, ages 11-15, and at least one parent or guardian. Logistical considerations when organizing a series of surveys and focus groups in rural areas are presented. Lessons learned from working with participants in the study are also included, such as providing child care services, addressing …

Nutrition and Dietetics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Breast cancer risk, and risk of associated co-morbidities such as cardiovascular disease, is highest among overweight or obese women with a previous history of breast cancer. The objective of this study is to test the effectiveness of a tailored nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral weight management intervention for breast cancer survivors against a widely available commercial weight management program. We hypothesize that an intervention tailored to the unique psychological, nutritional, and physical needs of breast cancer survivors will provide superior physiological and psychological benefits compared to an existing commercial program for the general population. To test our hypothesis, we initially …

Nutrition Education Curriculum For The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (Agep), Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) in rural and urban Zambia aims to build social, health, and economic assets of adolescent girls. A safe spaces component is at the core of AGEP. Girls groups, under the guidance of a female mentor from the same community, provide a safe and supportive learning environment. The meetings are critical in building social assets for vulnerable girls—including friendships, self-esteem, trusting relationships with adults, and social support. The training content over the course of the year varies from sexual and reproductive health and life skills to financial education and nutrition training. This collection is focused …

Supporting Girls In Their Transition To Secondary Education: An Exploratory Study Of The Family, School And Community Environments Of Adolescent Girls In Gujarat, K.G. Santhya, Shireen J. Jejeebhoy, A.J. Francis Zavier, Rajib Acharya, Neeta Shah

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Despite government commitment to universal secondary education in India, few adolescents transition to and successfully complete secondary education. In India, limited efforts have been directed at parents to promote positive attitudes toward education and school completion. Recognizing the need for identifying effective intervention strategies to engage parents and communities to promote secondary education for girls, the Population Council and partners are pilot-testing an intervention to support adolescent girls’ transition to and retention in secondary education. Located in the state of Gujarat, the intervention focuses on girls in the last year of primary school and first year of secondary school and …

Enhancing Livelihood Opportunities For Young Women In Rural Upper Egypt: The Neqdar Nesharek Program, Nada Ramadan, Nahla G. Abdel-Tawab, Khaled El Sayed, Rania Roushdy

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

During the 30+ years that the Population Council has been operating in Egypt, Council researchers have examined many facets of young people’s lives, including conducting nationally representative surveys in 1997, 2009, and 2014. This research has documented the marginalization of Egyptian women in the public sphere, including the labor market, as well as gender inequities in mobility and access to schooling. Neqdar Nesharek is a social and economic empowerment program that evolved in response to this research and from the Council’s experience over the last few years working closely with out-of-school girls in Upper Egypt via the Ishraq program. The …

Trafficking Of Minor Girls For Commercial Sexual Exploitation In India: A Synthesis Of Available Evidence, K.G. Santhya, Shireen J. Jejeebhoy, Sharmistha Basu Jan 2014

Trafficking Of Minor Girls For Commercial Sexual Exploitation In India: A Synthesis Of Available Evidence, K.G. Santhya, Shireen J. Jejeebhoy, Sharmistha Basu

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Understanding factors that place minor girls at risk of being trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) and the consequences of trafficking for their health and life-course trajectories is limited by the scattered evidence available on these issues. The role of various stakeholders in trafficking, namely, families, traffickers, and brothel owners, and the role of law enforcement agencies in preventing it are also poorly understood. Further, adequate data consolidating the responses of government and nongovernmental organizations to issues related to CSE of minor girls are lacking. There is a need, therefore, to consolidate this scattered body of evidence and to identify …

Correlation Analysis Between Surface Electromyography And Continuous-Wave Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Parameters During Isometric Exercise To Volitional Fatigue, Ömer Şayli̇, Ata Akin, Hasan Bi̇rol Çotuk Jan 2014

Correlation Analysis Between Surface Electromyography And Continuous-Wave Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Parameters During Isometric Exercise To Volitional Fatigue, Ömer Şayli̇, Ata Akin, Hasan Bi̇rol Çotuk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, the process of muscular fatigue was examined using surface electromyography (sEMG) and continuous-wave near-infrared spectroscopy (cw-NIRS) simultaneously during an isometric hand grip exercise at 50% and 75% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), sustained until volitional fatigue. The mean frequency of the sEMG decreased during the whole exercise, whereas the root mean square had a tendency to increase. Oxyhemoglobin/deoxyhemoglobin concentration changes computed with cw-NIRS were found to exhibit a fast linear decrease/increase in the first 10--20 s of the exercise, the so-called fast phase, followed by a plateau-like slow phase. The change rates were higher at 75% …

Tomato Fruit Quality As Influenced By Salinity And Nitric Oxide, Hala Ezzat Mohamed Ali, Ghada Saber Mohamed Ismail Jan 2014

Tomato Fruit Quality As Influenced By Salinity And Nitric Oxide, Hala Ezzat Mohamed Ali, Ghada Saber Mohamed Ismail

Turkish Journal of Botany

The impact of salinity (measured by adding 100 mM of NaCl to the nutrient solution) and spraying with sodium nitroprusside (10 µM of SNP, NO source) on fruit quality of tomato (Super Strain B) plants grown under field conditions was studied. Irrigation with salinised nutrient solution alone resulted in a significant suppression in fruit fresh and dry biomass, length, diameter, and volume as well as \beta-carotene and lycopene contents. This decrease was accompanied by a significant increase in Na accumulation, total alkaloids, and antioxidants, including total phenolics and flavonoids, and reduced ascorbic acid (ASA) content. Similar to total phenolics and …

Does Gypsum Influence Seed Germination?, Eva M. Cañadas, Miguel Ballesteros, Francisco Valle, Juan Lorite

Turkish Journal of Botany

Flora inhabiting gypsum outcrops in arid environments shows a high level of specialization. However, the processes involved are still unclear, specifically at the key stage of germination. Here, to assess whether gypsum could chemically influence seed germination, we tested the germination of species according to 3 functional groups: gypsophiles, gypsovags, and calcicoles. A total of 24 taxa were selected, all occurring in gypsum and limestone substrates, under a semiarid and dry Mediterranean climate. Three levels of gypsum (CaSO_{4}^.2H_{2}O) solution (low = 0.5 g/L, medium = 1 g/L, and high = 2.4 g/L) and 1 control treatment of distilled water were …
