School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Wing polymorphism is a powerful model for examining many aspects of adaptation. The wing dimorphic cricket species, Gryllus firmus, consists of a long-winged morph with functional flight muscles that is capable of flight, and two flightless morphs. One (obligately) flightless morph emerges as an adult with vestigial wings and vestigial flight muscles. The other (plastic) flightless morph emerges with fully-developed wings but later in adulthood histolyzes its flight muscles. Importantly both flightless morphs have substantially increased reproductive output relative to the flight-capable morph. Much is known about the physiological and biochemical differences between the morphs with respect to adaptations …

Antibacterial Activity Of Organic Acids And An Aqueous Lime-Peel Extract Against Selected Foodborne Pathogens, Haider Naji Kazim Al-Khanaq

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Food of animal origin contaminated with food-borne pathogens still concerns the public and food experts due to its harm toward public health. Using organic acids is one of the most important interventions for controlling the microbiological safety and quality of food and has been widely used. An increase of bacterial acid resistant species gave the motivation to find an alternative way to control foodborne pathogens in meat. Limited experimental studies have investigated the antibacterial activity of organic acids and an aqueous lime-peel extract combination on chicken meat against foodborne pathogens. The inhibitory effects of citric, propionic, acetic and lactic acid …

Cura Personalis: A Healthcare Delivery Quandary At The End Of Life, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2014

Cura Personalis: A Healthcare Delivery Quandary At The End Of Life, George P. Smith Ii

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Holistic Medicine traces its provenance to the foundational value or chrism of the Society of Jesus of cura personalis which directs respect be given to all individuals and to their souls — especially whenever medical healing is required. Today, the notion of best patient care should include not merely attention to somatic issues of refractory pain management but, equally, to non-somatic or existential suffering. It is at the end-stage of life that palliative — as opposed to curative — care must be provided. When a condition is seen as medically futile, this Article advocates palliative or deep sedation — when …
