The Effect Of Days In The Close Up Pen On 60 Day Cull Rates And Milk Production In The Subsequent Lactation, Hudson Hanlon

Dairy Science

The transition period is one of the most important times in a cows life. Cows during this period are susceptible to many kinds of health problems that are related to the time of calving. These metabolic disorders can have a large impact on the beginning milk yields of dairy cows. This study was done to see if the amount of days in the close up pen has a large effect on milk yield after calving. Five Holstein dairy herds in the California Central Valley were used for this study. Residence time in close up pen was recorded for all cows. …

Preparing Samples Of Rancid Milk For Milk Judging Contests, Danielle Li Mar 2014

Preparing Samples Of Rancid Milk For Milk Judging Contests, Danielle Li

Dairy Science

Due to the growing concern of raw milk, there is a growing need for other methods of preparing rancid milk for milk judging. The origin of rancidity in milk is due to lipolysis caused the lipase enzyme. However, with pasteurization, the lipase enzyme is inactivated. The purpose of this experiment was to compare the effect of using lipase powder to other current methods of preparing rancid milk, such as utilizing raw milk. Result showed that all treatments caused desired rancidity. The second purpose was to compare the rancidity between Method A, two to three hour incubation at room temperature, and …

A Literature Review On Injection-Site Lesions In Dairy Cows And Culling Decisions, Eric B. Parsons Mar 2014

A Literature Review On Injection-Site Lesions In Dairy Cows And Culling Decisions, Eric B. Parsons

Dairy Science

Currently dairy producers face particular problems concerning their culled cows and bulls, these problems must be addressed so dairy producers have the opportunity to improve the quality of beef produced from their cull dairy cows. At the moment, not much is known about culling decisions outside “break-even” numbers and poor cow conditioning. This literature review outlines the strategy behind culling decisions and looks into potential plans to develop progressive body conditioning and quality of meat sent to auction. Currently the dairy industry is not placing much demand into providing the livestock auctions and harvest plants with higher quality meat. This …

Pre-Plant Anhydrous Ammonia Placement Consequences On No-Till Versus Conventional-Till Maize Growth And Nitrogen Responses, Peter Kovacs, George E. Van Scoyoc, Thomas A. Doerge, James J. Camberato, Tony J. Vyn Mar 2014

Pre-Plant Anhydrous Ammonia Placement Consequences On No-Till Versus Conventional-Till Maize Growth And Nitrogen Responses, Peter Kovacs, George E. Van Scoyoc, Thomas A. Doerge, James J. Camberato, Tony J. Vyn

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

With the advent of precision guidance systems, maize (Zea mays L.) farmers in various tillage systems have more options in pre-plant nutrient banding relative to the intended crop rows. Anhydrous ammonia (NH3) placement during pre-plant application is of interest because of concerns for possible ammonia toxicity to maize seedlings when high NH3 rates are applied too close to the seed row and the need to improve plant-nitrogen (N) use efficiencies. Field studies were conducted between 2010 and 2012 near West Lafayette, IN, to compare traditional angled (diagonally) vs. precision-guided parallel NH3 applications (the latter was offset 15 cm from …

Characterization Of Changes In Composition And Physicochemical Properties Of Casein Micelles From Raw Milk To Buttermilk, Melissa Ann Looney Mar 2014

Characterization Of Changes In Composition And Physicochemical Properties Of Casein Micelles From Raw Milk To Buttermilk, Melissa Ann Looney

Master's Theses

It is well-documented that buttermilk has poor coagulation properties due to changes that occur to the casein micelles during the butter-making process. These modifications are generally attributed to the pasteurization of the cream upon which interactions between the proteins are promoted. It was hypothesized that churning is also a critical step for the changes that occur in composition of the casein micelles. The objective of this work was to learn more about the interactions that occur between casein micelles and MFGM components during the butter making process.

Raw cream was processed using a rotary churn at 18°C for approximately 30 …

Of The Most Common Weight-Loss Programs, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, And Medifast, Which Is The Most Effective?, Jenna Carlson

2014 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity Documents

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared obesity as a global epidemic, estimating 2.3 billion people will be overweight, and 700 million people will be obese by 2015. With the rise in obesity, weight-loss programs are one avenue that consumers are using to battle the epidemic. Approximately 2/3 of adults in the Western population are trying to lose weight or avoid weight gain.

The purpose of this paper is to review the current research of four major weight-loss programs: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, and Medifast, regarding fundamentals of the programs, the programs safety for consumers use, effectiveness of the …

A couple of months prior to my daughter's first birthday, my husband and I decided with heavy hearts to look for a daycare facility that can accommodate our pressing needs. I was on the final months of my doctoral studies with a dissertation waiting to be concluded and defended while reviewing for the New York bar examination and trying to earn a few dollars as a library assistant - there was no way I could still be a full-time mother at the same time unless sleep goes out of vogue. We were in the United States where house helpers are …

Mandatory Labeling Laws: What Do Recent State Enactments Portend For The Future Of Gmos?, Ross H. Pifer Mar 2014

Mandatory Labeling Laws: What Do Recent State Enactments Portend For The Future Of Gmos?, Ross H. Pifer

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

A debate on the propriety of establishing mandatory GMO labeling at the state level is well underway. Based on the results of recent ballot initiatives and state legislation, it is apparent that the concept of mandatory labeling enjoys significant support. Vermont has led the way with its enactment of a "no-strings attached" GMO labeling law, but federal courts and Congress will ultimately determine how the labeling issue will proceed. Regardless of how court challenges or preemptive federal legislation develop on the labeling issue, consumers still must decide whether they support the existing genetically modified food system. It is reasonable to …

Pollen Drift: Reframing The Biotechnology Liability Debate, A. Bryan Endres, Lisa Schlessinger

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

The advent of genetic engineering and its application to agriculture has transformed the rural landscape at a microscopic level. A cursory glance of current production fails to reveal the underlying legal tensions at work in post-modem agriculture. The seemingly natural and necessary event of drifting, sexually viable pollen, however, implicates legal rights and responsibilities at the farm level with a ripple effect felt throughout the international commodity food and feed supply chain. Despite the ubiquitous nature of agricultural biotechnology, disputes arising from simple pollen drift lack a clear legal doctrine to define the multitude of subjects implicated, including tort liability, …

Doumas, Andreas Pittaras, Raya Kheirbek, Athanasios Manolis, Demosthenes Panagiotakos, Vasilios Papademetriou, Ross D. Fletcher

Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND

Hypertension often coexists with dyslipidemia, accentuating cardiovascular risk. Statins are often prescribed in hypertensive individuals to lower cardiovascular risk. Higher fitness is associated with lower mortality, but exercise capacity may be attenuated in hypertension. The combined effects of fitness and statin therapy in hypertensive individuals have not been assessed. Thus, we assessed the combined health benefits of fitness and statin therapy in hypertensive male subjects.

METHODS

Peak exercise capacity was assessed in 10,202 hypertensive male subjects (mean age = 60.4±10.6 years) in 2 Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. We established 4 fitness categories based on peak metabolic equivalents (METs) achieved …

The Great Co-Mission: A Postmodern Missiology, Greg G. Glatz Mar 2014

The Great Co-Mission: A Postmodern Missiology, Greg G. Glatz

Doctor of Ministry

The Great Commission has often been interpreted as a directive to colonize people and subject them to our agenda. We interpret “make disciples of all nations” as make other parts of the world Christian the way we are Christian. We interpret “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” as compelling them to repudiate any beliefs or practices that conflict with our understanding of Christianity. We interpret “teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” as indoctrinate them with creeds and catechisms. As a postmodern pilgrim, I want to …

Prevalence Of Disorders Recorded In Dogs Attending Primary-Care Veterinary Practices In England, Dan G. O'Neill, David B. Church, Paul D. Mcgreevy, Peter C. Thomson, Dave C. Brodbelt

Epidemiology Collection

Purebred dog health is thought to be compromised by an increasing occurence of inherited diseases but inadequate prevalence data on common disorders have hampered efforts to prioritise health reforms. Analysis of primary veterinary practice clinical data has been proposed for reliable estimation of disorder prevalence in dogs. Electronic patient record (EPR) data were collected on 148,741 dogs attending 93 clinics across central and south-eastern England. Analysis in detail of a random sample of EPRs relating to 3,884 dogs from 89 clinics identified the most frequently recorded disorders as otitis externa (prevalence 10.2%, 95% CI: 9.1–11.3), periodontal disease (9.3%, 95% CI: …

Dairy Science

The objective of this project was to determine if cash purchased supreme alfalfa hay in Tulare, CA could be cross-hedged by dairy farmers with a single commodity that is exchanged on the board in order to manage the volatility of alfalfa prices. The first objective was to find commodities that are traded on the board that could potentially be used to cross-hedge cash purchased or grown alfalfa. Three commodities that are similar to alfalfa were selected. The commodities were soybeans, soybean meal, and No. 2 yellow corn. The fourth commodity used was crude oil because fuel is a large cost …
