Herbivory Strains Resilience In Drought-Prone Aspen Landscapes Of The Western United States, Paul C. Rogers
Herbivory Strains Resilience In Drought-Prone Aspen Landscapes Of The Western United States, Paul C. Rogers
Aspen Bibliography
Aims: Aspen forests around the northern hemisphere provide rich biodiversity compared to surrounding vegetation types. In both North America and Europe, however, aspen are threatened by a variety of human impacts: clear-felling, land development, water diversions, fire suppression, and both wild and domestic ungulate herbivory. We conducted a landscape assessment of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) for the purpose of identifying key components of resilience. Specifically, we strove to test novel measures linking plant-animal interactions, compare crucial functional differences in aspen types, and make appropriate restorative recommendations based on the outcome of these assessments. Location: The Book Cliffs region of eastern …
Translational Nutrition: A Review Of The Application Of Nutrition Science, Regulation, And Outreach Case Study: Farm Fresh Rhode Island, Eliza Zalis
Public & Community Service Studies Student Scholarship
This project examines the avenues by which nutrition science impacts individuals in society. It examines the factors that influence consumer behavior and food choice and the importance of health literacy in guiding nutrition and health. It elucidates the role of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in regulating food labeling and the implications that such regulation has on consumer perception and possible health outcomes. Further, this project outlines recently proposed changes to the “Nutrition Facts” panel. In investigating nutrition education and outreach programs, this project includes a case study of Farm Fresh Rhode Island and the organization’s nutrition initiatives.

Effects Of Replacing Fishmeal With Squash Seed Meal (Cucurbita Maxima) On Performance Of Juvenile Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Janice A. Ragaza, Jonni Fay C. Teves, Marie Noelle Fernandez
Biology Faculty Publications
The effects of replacing fishmeal with squash (Cucurbita maxima) seed meal (SSM) on Oreochromis niloticus juveniles were investigated on a 30-day feeding trial. Triplicate groups of ten (10) O. niloticus juveniles (2.54±0.949 g) stocked in polyethylene tanks received iso-nitrogenous diets with SSM inclusion levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. Fish fed 5% SSM inclusion level showed the highest average weight gain (202.25±36.26%) and specific growth rate (3.76±0.42%) among the fish fed SSM-containing diets. However, there were no significant differences between the average weight gain and specific growth rate of fish in all diets. Fish fed S5, S15 and …
Last Rights Denied: Right Of Sepulcher In Springing Power Of Attorney For Health Care Invalidated, Alice Haseltine
Last Rights Denied: Right Of Sepulcher In Springing Power Of Attorney For Health Care Invalidated, Alice Haseltine
Missouri Law Review
A recent decision from the Missouri Court of Appeals, In re Estate of Collins, holds that when a competent principal under a durable power dies suddenly without the required doctor’s certification of incapacity, the agent’s right of sepulcher does not vest, and therefore, the agent is never granted authority to dispose of the principal’s remains.4 The practical effect of this decision is to invalidate the rights of sepulcher in prevalent springing durable powers of attorney for health care. In light of this decision, all existing springing durable powers of attorney for health care in Missouri should be revisited to ensure …
Derelect Churchbells Ring In New Technology, Lauren Sloan
Derelect Churchbells Ring In New Technology, Lauren Sloan
Architecture Senior Theses
In order to accommodate this, we should first test algae facades on pre-existing building shells. I have a specific interest in derelect churches in because they are plenitful and although not on historic lists, they can still be preserved through the revitalization process. All buildings cannot be saved for preservation sake, so these buildings can accomodate new programs for specific city and site needs. Injecting these new technologies into the buildings will produce a contradiction that emphasizes both the new and old architecture. The deeper meaning of this thesis embodies what the visual chroma effects of algae are on the …
Unveiling The Rural Landscape, Carolina Jimenez
Unveiling The Rural Landscape, Carolina Jimenez
Architecture Senior Theses
Within the past 50 years, industrialized farming has transformed America’s rural and agricultural landscapes. These two landscapes have taken on increasingly divergent cultural representations in language, paintings and photography. Architectural interventions within the rural landscape can act as a device to reveal these differences. In this way I am engaging in four interrelated discourses.
Defining the Rural | Linguistic, Painting, Photographic Representations In order to define the rural landscape, it is essential to understand the way it has been constructed by cultural representations in language, painting and photography. Images of nature mediate that which is outside of us, translating environment …

Unpermitted Urban Agriculture: Transgressive Actions, Changing Norms And The Local Food Movement, Sarah B. Schindler

Roberta keeps four chickens in her backyard. Bob snuck onto the vacant lot next door, which the bank foreclosed upon and now owns, and planted a vegetable garden. Vien operates an occasional underground restaurant from his friends’ microbrewery after beer-making operations cease for the day. The common thread tying these actions together is that they are unauthorized; they are being undertaken in violation of existing laws and often norms. In this Article, I explore ideas surrounding the overlap between food policy and land use law, specifically the transgressive1 actions that people living in urban and suburban communities are undertaking to …
Evidence-Based Health Literacy Training Program For Occupational Therapy Professionals : Program Development And Evaluation, Cheryl Miller-Scott
Evidence-Based Health Literacy Training Program For Occupational Therapy Professionals : Program Development And Evaluation, Cheryl Miller-Scott
Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This capstone project is a training program development and evaluation project. The purpose of the project was to develop, pilot, and evaluate an
evidence-based health literacy training program for occupational therapy professionals. Occupational therapy strives to be a science-driven profession, which provides client-centered care. Health literacy is a client-centered factor for which occupational therapy professionals require additional training to best serve their clients in all settings and across the lifespan. A review of health literacy literature was used in this project to develop the training program and offers a science-driven approach to this client-centered factor for occupational therapists to better …

Cost-Effectiveness Of Food And Cash Transfers To Patients Under Anti-Retroviral Treatment In Zambia, Chibamba Mwansakilwa, Gelson Tembo
Southern African Journal of Policy and Development
This study determines the relative cost-effectiveness of food and cash transfers when administered to Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) / Acquired Immune-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients on Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) in Zambia. The results show that cash transfers are not only cheaper but also unambiguously more cost-effective with respect to nutrition and health outcomes such as body-mass index (BMI) and Cluster of Differentiation 4 (CD4) count. This seems to suggest that, whenever market conditions and institutional capacities (banks, personnel, etc.) permit, cash should be given a higher rating by governments and other programming stakeholders than physical food aid as an instrument for …

Increasing Dry Cow And Bred Heifer Performance With Environmental Management, Stephen F. Higgins, Kylie Schmidt
Increasing Dry Cow And Bred Heifer Performance With Environmental Management, Stephen F. Higgins, Kylie Schmidt
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Producing high-quality milk is a primary concern of dairy farmers, which is why the production herd often receives more attention than the dry cows and bred heifers. However, it is important that dairy producers not lose sight of the great value that their dry cows and bred heifers hold: the future of the milking herd. Environmental management practices such as rotational grazing, heavy-use area pads for feeding and watering, and shelter can be used to increase close-up cows’ future performance by preventing mastitis and other health disorders such as lameness.
Soybean Nutrient Management In Kentucky, Edwin L. Ritchey, Chad Lee, Carrie Ann Knott, John H. Grove
Soybean Nutrient Management In Kentucky, Edwin L. Ritchey, Chad Lee, Carrie Ann Knott, John H. Grove
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Soybean grows best on fertile soils. For decades, the University of Kentucky has conducted field studies to establish the relationship between soil nutrient supplies and soybean yield. Adequate soil fertility must be present so that yields are not limited. Soybean removes a large amount of nutrients in the seed relative to other annual crops. For each bushel of soybean produced, 3 lb N, 0.7 lb P2O5, and 1.1 lb K2O will be removed in the seed, but considerably more is required to supply the leaves, stems and pods that are not removed during harvest …

There is an ever increasing number of users in social media (1B+ Facebook users, 500M+ Twitter users) and ubiquitous mobile access (6B+ mobile phone subscribers) who share their observations and opinions. In addition, the Web of Data and existing knowledge bases keep on growing at a rapid pace. In this scenario, we have unprecedented opportunities to improve crisis response by extracting social signals, creating spatio-temporal mappings, performing analytics on social and Web of Data, and supporting a variety of applications. Such applications can help provide situational awareness during an emergency, improve preparedness, and assist during the rebuilding/recovery phase of a …

A Cross-Sectional Study Of Well Water Arsenic And Child Iq In Maine Schoolchildren, Gail A. Wasserman, Xinhua Liu, Nancy J. Loiacono, Jennie Kline, Pam Factor-Litvak, Alexander Van Geen, Jacob L. Mey, Diane Levy, Richard Abramson, Amy Schwartz, Joseph H. Graziano
Publications and Research
Background In recent studies in Bangladesh and elsewhere, exposure to arsenic (As) via drinking water is negatively associated with performance-related aspects of child intelligence (e.g., Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory) after adjustment for social factors. Because findings are not easily generalizable to the US, we examine this relation in a US population. Methods In 272 children in grades 3–5 from three Maine school districts, we examine associations between drinking water As (WAs) and intelligence (WISC-IV). Results On average, children had resided in their current home for 7.3 years (approximately 75% of their lives). In unadjusted analyses, household well WAs is associated …

Fatty Acids And Mercury In Seventy Seven Species Of Commercially Available Finfish In The United States, Dennis P. Cladis
Fatty Acids And Mercury In Seventy Seven Species Of Commercially Available Finfish In The United States, Dennis P. Cladis
Open Access Theses
Finfish are consumed across the United States and constitute an important part of the American diet. However, seafood consumption can be a tenuous topic, with supporters highlighting the health benefits of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n3) and opponents emphasizing the neurotoxicity of methylmercury. Because all fish contain varying amounts of EPA, DHA, and methylmercury, the need for clear and unbiased information is essential to alleviate the confusion experienced by many consumers and empower them to make informed decisions regarding seafood consumption. As the market changes and more fish originate from aquaculture sources, where diets are controlled, …

Physical Activity Informational Websites: Accuracy, Language Ease, And Fear Appeal, Samantha Rose Paige
Open Access Theses
Introduction. Health information is one of the most common searches on the Internet. Literature supports that, in general, health information readily available to Internet consumers is not accurate, lacks plain language for ease of understanding, and does not incorporate behavior-change theoretical frameworks. The purpose of this study was to evaluate each of these components. Method. Three keywords, "physical activity," "exercise," and "fitness," were entered into four popular search engines: Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The first 5 result pages were considered, totaling a sample of 493 websites. After exclusionary criteria, 102 websites were reviewed and analyzed with guidance from ACSM recommendations, …
