Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Yellow bluestem (Bothriochloa ischaemum), an invasive species, was introduced as a forage species and as a roadside grass for erosion control. Yellow bluestem can negatively interact with native grasslands and reduce biodiversity. Livestock tend to avoid yellow bluestem after accumulation of standing lignified tissue, particularly at the end of the growing season. Mowing has been used in pasture situations to remove excess grass for hay and over coarse grass left from the previous season. It is essential to understand the role livestock play as either a catalyst for control or preventing further invasion of yellow bluestem. Quantification of the timing …

Dispersal Of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Near Central Great Plains Feedlots, Jennifer R. Pfannenstiel-Klaus May 2014

Dispersal Of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Near Central Great Plains Feedlots, Jennifer R. Pfannenstiel-Klaus

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern in medical and veterinary settings. Resistance can be worsened by misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Such situations can give rise to highly resistant organisms. Ciprofloxacin, a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat gram-positive and gram-negative infections in humans, has similar chemical structure to enrofloxacin, which is used to treat animals. Cross-resistance might arise because of that similarity. This research describes the dispersal and prevalence of bacteria that exhibit ciprofloxacin resistance in relation to feedlots in the central Great Plains region. Six times in 2013, six feedlots were sampled for airborne bacterial communities at, upwind …

The Anti-Obesogenic Effects Of Nitric Oxide., Brian Edward Sansbury 1985- May 2014

The Anti-Obesogenic Effects Of Nitric Oxide., Brian Edward Sansbury 1985-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is a strong risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and has quickly reached epidemic proportions with few tangible and safe treatment options. While it is generally accepted that the primary cause of obesity is energy imbalance, i.e., more calories are consumed than are utilized, understanding how caloric balance is regulated has proven a challenge. Molecular processes and pathways that directly regulate energy metabolism represent promising targets for therapy. In particular, nitric oxide (NO) is emerging as a central regulator of energy metabolism and body composition. NO bioavailability is decreased in animal models of obesity and …

Development Modeling Of Lucilia Sericata And Phormia Regina (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Amanda L. Roe

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The relationship between insect development and temperature has been well established and has a wide range of uses, including using blow flies for postmortem (PMI) interval estimations in death investigations. To use insects in estimating PMI, we must be able to determine the insect age at the time of discovery and backtrack to time of oviposition. Unfortunately, existing development models of forensically important insects are only linear approximations and do not take into account the curvilinear properties experienced at extreme temperatures. A series of experiments were conducted with two species of forensically important blow flies (Lucilia sericata and Phormia …

Role Of Essential Amino Acids And Ketoanalogues In Chronic Kidney Disease, P Kittiskulnam, S. Eiam-Ong May 2014

Role Of Essential Amino Acids And Ketoanalogues In Chronic Kidney Disease, P Kittiskulnam, S. Eiam-Ong

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Imbalance of protein degradation and synthesis is known as a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and finally leads to protein energy wasting. Nutritional intervention including protein-restricted strategy plays an important part of integrated CKD management. Dietary therapy can retard the loss of residual renal function and alter metabolism of various amino acids. However, low-protein diet may worsen the patients' malnutrition status and promote loss of body protein store. The implementation of nutritional treatment by using ketoanalogues of essential amino acids or keto acids is promising. Their structures are similar to other amino acids but contain no amine group …
