Polyamines And Abiotic Stress In Plants: A Complex Relationship, Rakesh Minocha, Rajtilak Majumdar, Subhash C. Minocha May 2014

Polyamines And Abiotic Stress In Plants: A Complex Relationship, Rakesh Minocha, Rajtilak Majumdar, Subhash C. Minocha

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

The physiological relationship between abiotic stress in plants and polyamines was reported more than 40 years ago. Ever since there has been a debate as to whether increased polyamines protect plants against abiotic stress (e.g., due to their ability to deal with oxidative radicals) or cause damage to them (perhaps due to hydrogen peroxide produced by their catabolism). The observation that cellular polyamines are typically elevated in plants under both short-term as well as long-term abiotic stress conditions is consistent with the possibility of their dual effects, i.e., being protectors from as well as perpetrators of stress damage to the …

Cmsi Archive Translation: Chinese Sea Power Expansion And The State Of Sea Power In The Indian Ocean, Li Jian [李剑 ] May 2014

Cmsi Archive Translation: Chinese Sea Power Expansion And The State Of Sea Power In The Indian Ocean, Li Jian [李剑 ]

CMSI Translations

The article analyzes the strategic competition between China and India in the Indian Ocean, where both powers seek to expand sea power and secure critical chokepoints such as the Malacca Strait. It argues that China’s naval modernization and maritime presence challenge India’s traditional dominance and intersect with U.S. interests in maintaining regional stability. The author highlights that control of sea lanes and access to bases will shape future power balances, making maritime security in the Indian Ocean central to broader questions of hegemony and great-power rivalry.

Implementing Health And Safety Policy Changes At The High School Level From A Leadership Perspective, Kelly D. Pagnotta May 2014

Implementing Health And Safety Policy Changes At The High School Level From A Leadership Perspective, Kelly D. Pagnotta

Doctoral Dissertations

Context: Every year high school athletes die or are injured while participating in sports. Several policies can be implemented by high school athletic associations (HSAA) to reduce the incidence of sudden death in sport. While these policies may not prevent incidences, they certainly reduce the risk associated with sport. There are consensus statements and recommendations made by professional organizations such as the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), however nothing is mandated, allowing each state the freedom to create, implement and adapt policies, as they deem necessary. An example of a recommended policy is heat acclimatization for the reduction in …

Does Size Matter In The Field?: Female Police Bodies In Online Television, Carmen M. Cusack May 2014

Does Size Matter In The Field?: Female Police Bodies In Online Television, Carmen M. Cusack

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study is to investigate how female officers’ body sizes are depicted on the TV show, “Police Women of Broward County.” Little literature examines the media’s depiction of bodies belonging to women who are involved in traditionally masculine professions. However, feminist and masculinist literature, along with biophysical literature, tends to suggest that women are smaller and weaker than men or are perceived that way in society. It stands to reason that media may portray female officers this way or portray women attempting to overcome this stigma personally and professionally to appeal to viewers or as a reflection …

The Examination Of Healthy Eating Across Cultures: An Existential Phenomenological Approach, Sarah K. Simpson May 2014

The Examination Of Healthy Eating Across Cultures: An Existential Phenomenological Approach, Sarah K. Simpson

Honors College Theses

Adhering to a healthy eating plan has been a topic of discussion across World regions. Moreover, Americans often attempt to mimic the eating habits of other regions of the world, such as the Mediterranean or Eastern Asia, in an attempt to live a long and healthy life. Satia et al., (2000) suggest that healthy eating perceptions can be influenced by food and beverage exposure, family norms, preparation methods, and geographic locations. Although this is the case, little research has been found which has examined healthy eating perceptions across regions from a qualitative perspective. Thus, the purpose of this study is …

Sirt1 Deletion Leads To Enhanced Inflammation And Aggravates Endotoxin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury, Rong Gao, Jiao Chen, Yuxin Hu, Zhenyu Li, Shuxia Wang, Sreerama Shetty, Jian Fu May 2014

Sirt1 Deletion Leads To Enhanced Inflammation And Aggravates Endotoxin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury, Rong Gao, Jiao Chen, Yuxin Hu, Zhenyu Li, Shuxia Wang, Sreerama Shetty, Jian Fu

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Bacterial endotoxin has been known to induce excessive inflammatory responses and acute kidney injury. In the present study, we used a mouse model of endotoxemia to investigate the role of Sirt1 in inflammatory kidney injury. We examined molecular and cellular responses in inducible Sirt1 knockout (Sirt1-/-) mice and wild type littermates (Sirt1+/+) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced kidney injury. Our studies demonstrated that Sirt1 deletion caused aggravated kidney injury, which was associated with increased inflammatory responses including elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and increased ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 expression. Inflammatory signaling such as STAT3/ERK phosphorylation and NF-κB activation was markedly elevated in kidney tissues …

Title: Parallel Sessions (Brand Management): The Challenge Of Creating And Sustaining Consumer Durables’ Brands In The Bop Segment, Nayyara Rahman May 2014

Title: Parallel Sessions (Brand Management): The Challenge Of Creating And Sustaining Consumer Durables’ Brands In The Bop Segment, Nayyara Rahman

International Conference on Marketing

This research was conducted to identify and discuss challenges in creating and sustaining consumer-durables’ (CD) brands for BOP segments. The study encompassed global and local brands, and included existing branding practices for their product offerings. Digressing slightly from the conventional approach, this study focused on female rather than male buyers in the BOP urban segment. The purpose behind this was to highlight the hidden dependence on female primary-skilled workers as a source of domestic income. This dependence and the role it plays in household purchases is often overlooked; often assumed to be immaterial, and often taken to be directed at …

Parallel Sessions (Consumer Behavior): Impact Of Packaging Elements Of Packaged Milk On Consumer Buying Behaviour, Muhammad Amir Adam, Kamran Ali May 2014

Parallel Sessions (Consumer Behavior): Impact Of Packaging Elements Of Packaged Milk On Consumer Buying Behaviour, Muhammad Amir Adam, Kamran Ali

International Conference on Marketing

This research paper examines the impact of packaging elements on consumer buying behaviour. The motivation for carrying out this study is to know how packaging elements impact on consumers buying behaviour. Packaging has now changed its traditional role of protecting the product to communicate a complete message about the product, to get the consumer attention on retail stores and to provide convenience for consumers to use the product (Rundh, Linking Packaging to Marketing: how packaging is influencing the marketing strategy, 2013). Therefore it is important for firms, marketers and packaging designers to know how packaging influences consumers’ purchase decision. In …

Application Of Neurospora Crassa In The Treatment Of Waste, Matthew Przybyla, John Wunderlich May 2014

Application Of Neurospora Crassa In The Treatment Of Waste, Matthew Przybyla, John Wunderlich

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The nutrient requirements of the fast growing filamentous fungi Neurospora crassa to convert animal waste into an edible product containing high amounts of protein were assessed by selectively excluding nutrients from supplemental solutions of Vogel salts and trace elements added to the waste. When individual chemical components were omitted from the supplemental solutions, varying levels of growth were observed. However, there was no statistically significant difference. Similar results were obtained when groups of selected compounds were omitted from the supplemental solutions. Overall, these results suggest that the nutritional requirements for sustainably growing Neurospora crassa on animal waste may not be …

Resistance To Botrytis Cinerea In Solanum Lycopersicoides Involves Widespread Transcriptional Reprogramming., Jonathon E. Smith, Bemnet Mengesha, Hua Tang, Tesfaye Mengiste, Burton H. Bluhm

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Background

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), one of the world’s most important vegetable crops, is highly susceptible to necrotrophic fungal pathogens such as Botrytis cinerea and Alternaria solani. Improving resistance through conventional breeding has been hampered by a shortage of resistant germplasm and difficulties in introgressing resistance into elite germplasm without linkage drag. The goal of this study was to explore natural variation among wild Solanum species to identify new sources of resistance to necrotrophic fungi and dissect mechanisms underlying resistance againstB. cinerea.

Results

Among eight wild species evaluated for resistance against B. cinerea and A. solani …

Characterizing And Improving The Oral Sensations And Preference Of Polyphenol-Rich Aronia Berry Juice, Jeeha Park May 2014

Characterizing And Improving The Oral Sensations And Preference Of Polyphenol-Rich Aronia Berry Juice, Jeeha Park

Honors Scholar Theses

Background: Aronia berries (chokeberries) have very high levels of health-promoting polyphenols yet cause "choking" sensations due to bitterness and astringency. We aimed to describe oral sensations and palatability of aronia juice by variations in harvest time and oral sensory phenotype. Sensory blocking combinations were tested to improve juice acceptability. Methods: Ripe aronia berries were harvested at 7 time points and juiced for oral sampling by 50 adults who underwent bitter taste phenotyping. The adults reported quality intensities of prototypical tastes, foods, and aronia juices. Ethyl butyrate (10ppm) and/or sucrose (0.15 and 0.3M) were added to prototypical oral stimuli and aronia …
