Run Sprint Interval Training Perceived As Highly Enjoyable Despite High Session Rpe In Sedentary, Overweight/Obese Women, Taylor K. Wenos

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Purpose: The present study compared the effect of a 12-week run-sprint interval training (R-SIT) and moderate intensity training (MIT) on perceived enjoyment and exercise adherence in sedentary, overweight/obese women (n=15; age 25-45). Methods: Over 12-weeks, subjects in the R-SIT group progressed from 4 to 10 thirty second sprints each session, and the MIT group progressed from 30 to 60 minutes of continuous moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise. PACES, session RPE, intentions to modify activity behavior, attendance, VO2max, and body fat percentage were recorded in both groups. Results: There was a significant difference in session RPE between groups, and within the R-SIT …

Exercise And Time Of Day: Influence On Hunger And Caloric Intake Among Overweight/Obese Adults, Molly C. Weber

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the time of day at which exercise was performed, morning compared to evening, influences acute daily caloric intake and hunger in overweight/obese sedentary adults. 8 overweight/obese (Age: 40 ± 4 yrs, Height: 170 ± 4 cm, Weight: 85.7 ± 6.4 kg, BMI: 29 ± 2 kg/m2) sedentary adults completed 3 trials: control, morning, evening in a randomly counterbalanced cross over design. Caloric intake was assessed over three 4-day periods with subjects consuming ad libitum diets. Hunger was measured 15 minutes before exercise and 15 and 30 minutes following exercise. …

The Influence Of A Cyp1a2 Polymorphism On The Hemostatic Response To Caffeine, Joseph James Aiello May 2014

The Influence Of A Cyp1a2 Polymorphism On The Hemostatic Response To Caffeine, Joseph James Aiello

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Research has continued to provide conflicting results of caffeine’s effect on acute coronary events; although it is now apparent that a single nucleotide polymorphism at intron 1 of the cytochrome P450 (CYP1A2) gene may explain these equivocal findings. Despite the fact that markers of coagulation potential and fibrinolytic potential are associated with risk for myocardial infarction, the extent to which caffeine affects these markers is unknown. The purposes of this study were to determine the acute effects of caffeine on coagulation and fibrinolytic potential at rest and following maximal exercise and to determine if hemostatic responses engendered by caffeine are …

Muscle Physiology And Performance During Intensified Cycle Training: Impact Of Carbohydrate-Protein Supplementation, Andrew Christian D'Lugos May 2014

Muscle Physiology And Performance During Intensified Cycle Training: Impact Of Carbohydrate-Protein Supplementation, Andrew Christian D'Lugos

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Previous studies show that carbohydrate-protein (CP) ingestion can enhance short-term recovery following exercise, thereby benefiting subsequent exercise performance and compounding physiological parameters, when compared to carbohydrate (CHO) alone. Less is known about the influence that CP supplementation may have over a long-term intervention (several days/weeks). The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether CP supplementation was effective in improving tolerance to a period of intensified training (IT), compared to CHO. Additionally, the influence of CP on recovery/ adaptation to a period of IT followed by a period of reduced volume training (RVT) was examined. Eight endurance-trained cyclists (age: 24.9±7.3 …

Determining Forage Intake Of Nursing Calves Grazing Native Sandhills Rangeland, Jennifer A. Walker

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Effective management of grazing lands is important for longevity and productivity. Accurate calculations of stocking rates per animal unit will aid in long term sustainability. Calculating stocking rates for cattle can prove challenging for cows and nursing calves. Limited research has been conducted to determine forage intake of the nursing calf pre-weaning. The objective of Trial 1 was to determine nursing calf forage intake over time until weaning. Trial 1 used 8 crossbred cow-calf pairs in experiment 1 and 12 pairs in experiment 2. Pairs were separated into two groups rotating between grazing upland range or housed in individual pens …

Healthy Living Skills Education: A 12-Module Group Intervention For Individuals With Serious Mental Illness, Brette Marie Stephenson

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Serious mental illness often strikes during adolescence, a time of life when individuals typically prepare to navigate society as independent adults. Due to its symptoms and this crucial developmental interruption, people with serious mental illness often experience difficulties with acquiring and developing life skills. They often struggle to maintain financial independence or their physical health suffers as a result of poor diet and medication side effects. Most commonly, they struggle to develop competency in navigating the social demands of life and relationships. This project is a 12-module life skills group to provide support and group interventions regarding three life areas …

The Stress Response To An Acute Heavy Resistance Exercise Protocol, Adam J. Sterczala May 2014

The Stress Response To An Acute Heavy Resistance Exercise Protocol, Adam J. Sterczala

Master's Theses

Exercise has been shown to induce significant stress and a subsequent inflammatory response characterized by changes in circulating leukocyte populations and inflammatory cytokines and has been well documented following aerobic exercise. Research in regards to the effects of resistance exercise on the stress induced inflammatory response is less prevalent and has shown divergent results, likely due to differences in the exercise protocols used, the time points measured and the subjects involved. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to analyze the stress response to an acute heavy resistance exercise protocol (AHREP) in resistance-trained men. Specifically, we examined effects on circulating …

Metabolic Rates Of Embryo And Growth Of Cobia (Rachycentron Canadum) And Mahi (Coryphaena Hippurus) Larvae Through Early Juvenile Stages, Sasa A. Miralao

Open Access Theses

Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) are top pelagic predators known for exhibiting rapid rates of development and growth throughout all life stages. Metabolic rates of embryonic stages of both species were studied to determine and compare the relationship between their metabolism and growth during early developmental stages. Metabolic rates (0.246 ± 0.035 μL 2/egg/hr) and weight-specific metabolic rates (2.562 ± 0.364 μL O2/mg dry weight/hr) of cobia embryos were not significantly different than metabolic rates (0.345 ± 0.05 μL O2/egg/hr) and weightspecific metabolic rates (2.199 ± 0.321 μL O2/mg dry weight/hr) of mahi embryos. Growth rates, length-weight relationship …

The Unknown Puppet Masters Of The Modern Day American Diet And How To Cut To The Strings: A Look Into Parasites And Applied Kinesiology, Kirstie E. Carrizales

2014 Student Theses

Many Americans suffer recurring health problems that are accepted as "normal" in American society. From panic attacks to digestive problems, Americans have been getting sicker and sicker. At the same time, we find ourselves craving more processed foods and sweets. And how could we not, it's very hard to find food that has not been contaminated with processed parts. Western medicine provides multiple pills both prescription and non-prescription to "ease" our pains. But what is the underlying cause? And what is a real cure? To understand what is really going on with our bodies, we must scale ourselves down and …

Characteristics Of Working Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Recipients In Maine, According To The 2011 American Community Survey, Victoria Ryan

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). SNAP is designed to provide assistance in purchasing food to low income households in the United States. In Maine, individual benefits are administered by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Formerly (and still colloquially) known as the Food Stamp program, SNAP makes a dollar-value benefit, based on income, household size, household expenses, and a host of other factors, available to households via a debit or Electronic Benefit Card for the purchase of unprepared food from grocery and convenience stores, …
