Estimation Of Inbreeding And Substructure Levels In African-Derived Brazilian Quilombo Populations, Renan B. Lemes, Kelly Nunes, Diogo Meyer, Regina Célia Mingroni-Netto, Paulo A. Otto
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The present paper deals with the estimation of inbreeding and substructure levels in a set of ten (later regrouped as eight) African-derived quilombo communities from the Ribeira River Valley in the southern portion of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Inbreeding levels were assessed through F values estimated from the direct analysis of genealogical data and from the statistical analysis of a large set of 30 molecular markers. The levels of population substructure found were modest, as well as the degree of inbreeding: in the set of all communities considered together, F values ranged from 0.00136 to 0.00248, when using …
The Adequacy Of Dietary Essential Fatty Acids In Patients With Phenylketonuria Or Hyperphenylalaninemia: A Retrospective Study, Jessie Ho
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Objective To investigate if patients diagnosed with phenylketonuria (PKU) or hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) at the mid-south clinic had adequate essential fatty acid intakes.Design This study compared patients' intakes of linoleic (LA) and alpha-linolenic fatty acids (ALA) with Adequate Intake (AI) within an appropriate age and gender group. Data were gathered from existing food record analyses from MetabolicPro between June 2010 and December 2013. Means and standard deviations for percentage of essential fatty acid intakes were determined. A paired t-test was used to test the hypothesis that the mean intake of LA and ALA were equal. T-tests were performed to examine whether …
The Effects Of Traumatic Stress On Birth Outcomes Of African American And White Women, Larita Rochelle Webb
The Effects Of Traumatic Stress On Birth Outcomes Of African American And White Women, Larita Rochelle Webb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Preterm birth (PTB), an infant born with less than 37 weeks gestation, and small for gestional age (SGA), a constitutionally small or growth restricted infant, are the leading causes of infant mortality. There is a growing disparity in PTB and SGA by race, with African American women having the highest rates of all racial groups. Accounting for socioeconomic, behavioral and obstetric risk factors has not fully explained the racial disparity in birth outcomes. The goal of this dissertation was to determine if lifetime exposure to traumatic stress, measured by the Traumatic Life Events Questionaire (TLEQ), contributes to the disparity in PTB …

Metabolic Engineering Of Oilseed Crops To Produce High Levels Of Novel Acetyl Glyceride Oils With Reduced Viscosity, Freezing Point And Calorific Value, Jinjie Liu, Adam Rice, Kathleen Mcglew, Vincent Shaw, Hyunwoo Park, Thomas E. Clemente, Mike Pollard, John Ohlrogge, Timothy P. Durrett
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Seed oils have proved recalcitrant to modification for the production of industrially useful lipids. Here, we demonstrate the successful metabolic engineering and subsequent field production of an oilseed crop with the highest accumulation of unusual oil achieved so far in transgenic plants. Previously, expression of the Euonymus alatus diacylglycerol acetyltransferase (EaDAcT) gene in wild-type Arabidopsis seeds resulted in the accumulation of 45 mol% of unusual 3-acetyl-1,2- diacyl-sn-glycerols (acetyl-TAGs) in the seed oil (Durrett et al., 2010 PNAS 107:9464). Expression of EaDAcT in dgat1 mutants compromised in their ability to synthesize regular triacylglycerols increased acetyl-TAGs to 65 mol%. Camelina and soybean …

The Native American Organic Garden: Using Service Learning As A Site Of Resistance To The Boarding School Tradition, Donna Chollett
Anthropology Publications
As educators, we owe it to our students to enable them to transgress structural impediments and to create sustainable alternatives from the margins of the industrial agro-food system. Policies of assimilation, allotment, and enclosure of the Native American commons and ecosystems brought devastation to Native cultures. Dependence on government commodities replaced Native food sovereignty and contributed to malnutrition, obesity, and diabetes as diets responded to corporately produced and processed foods. Young people often feel disempowered and ask how they might confront such formidable forces as corporate control of our agro-food system, destruction of natural resources, and threats to human health. …

Exploring And Utilizing The Concept Of Setting Conditions In The Functional Assessment Process, Linda Aldridge, Richard Harrison, Kimberly Harrison, Cherie Blanchat
Exploring And Utilizing The Concept Of Setting Conditions In The Functional Assessment Process, Linda Aldridge, Richard Harrison, Kimberly Harrison, Cherie Blanchat
Journal of Adolescent and Family Health
Functional assessment is embedded in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1997) and Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) (Horner & Carr, 1997). While the process of functional assessment has helped many students become more successful in the educational setting, it is time to take a deeper look at those conditions from which behaviors originate. Such conditions, referred to in this article as setting conditions, often serve to initiate and sustain inappropriate behaviors that are the focus of the functional assessment. Unless directly analyzed, setting conditions weaken the impact of interventions focused solely upon those factors targeted in the Antecedent Behavior …
Wellness And Food Preferences Among Children Of Latino Immigrant Families In The Arcadia Community Of Spartanburg County, Sarah Grace Keaveny
Wellness And Food Preferences Among Children Of Latino Immigrant Families In The Arcadia Community Of Spartanburg County, Sarah Grace Keaveny
Student Scholarship
The topic of this capstone is the result of my synthesis across disciplines. As a student with majors in Biology and Spanish with a concentration in Medical Humanities, I wanted to research a topic that would include my disciplines in a way that would meaningfully prepare me to leave my undergraduate years for medical school. This project seeks to generate an understanding of the culturally created eating habits and perceptions of wellness in Latino children living in the Arcadia Community, as told by their mothers. By seeking this understanding, I hope that this project may serve as a tool to …
Evaluating Weight Status Of Pediatric Oncology Patients: A Pilot Study, Perrin Leanne Tamblyn
Evaluating Weight Status Of Pediatric Oncology Patients: A Pilot Study, Perrin Leanne Tamblyn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Overall 5-year survival rates for children with cancer have improved and are above 80%.39 Studies indicate that childhood cancer survivors have an increased risk for being overweight or obese due to treatment-related complications.14 Therefore, the correct assessment of weight status in pediatric oncology patients is important in identifying those patients at risk for being overweight or obesity. Neck circumference, ideal body weight percentage, and body mass index were compared to the Tanita© bioelectrical impedance analyzer measure of body fat in 27 pediatric oncology patients with leukemia and lymphoma. BMI was found to be in better agreement with the BIA than …
Examining Video Self-Modeling In Promoting Food Acceptance In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In A School Setting, Gail M. Loughlin Rogers
Examining Video Self-Modeling In Promoting Food Acceptance In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In A School Setting, Gail M. Loughlin Rogers
Doctoral Dissertations
Children with autism spectrum disorder have a higher incident of feeding problems as compared with typical children and children with other developmental delays, with the feeding problems more often identified as learned or behavioral. Research into the effectiveness of antecedent- and consequence-based behavioral strategies continue to grow, with most research conducted within clinical settings. As educators we strive for less restrictive and empirically validated interventions within more naturalistic settings. Despite the growing body of research as to the effectiveness of video modeling to affect change across a number of areas, research using video modeling is sparse with respect to food …
Food And Identity Formation Among Jain Laywomen, Kristin Mcconnell
Food And Identity Formation Among Jain Laywomen, Kristin Mcconnell
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Jains are a small but influential minority community in India. Their religion is structured around the concept of ahimsa, the strict adherence to nonviolence in one’s every under taking. The ideal Jain diet does the least amount of harm to both oneself and one’s environment, including plants and microscopic organisms. Many foods — including meat, honey, alcohol, and underground vegetables — are forbidden. While Jain philosophy is adamant about avoiding foods that are obtained through violence, it says little about the perspectives and lifestyles of those most often charged with maintaining this diet: Jain laywomen. Because these women are …
The Effect Of Tea And Its Constituent L-Theanine On Anxiety: A Review Of The Literature, Christine Gilbert
The Effect Of Tea And Its Constituent L-Theanine On Anxiety: A Review Of The Literature, Christine Gilbert
Food Science and Nutrition
Mental health disorders are a universal issue and affect millions of individuals every day. Anxiety is the most common type of mental disorder, affecting social, physical, and cognitive health. Although clinicians usually suggest prescriptive medications, they carry side effects, are expensive, and only acutely alleviate symptoms. As a result, recent interest has been directed towards nonconventional dietary therapies, including tea and its constituent L-theanine, for anxiolytic effects. Tea is the most prevalent beverage consumed after water; it is historically and globally accepted. The purpose of this literature review is to explore whether tea and its constituent L-theanine carry anxiolytic effects. …

With the collected data, future planning teams could make changes appropriate the input received that would benefit the effectiveness of the program overall. Creating an evaluation system started by researching agriculture education …
Seasonal Variation Of Milk In Central Valley California And The Association Of Milk Variation With The Composition And Texture Of Low Mositure Part Skim Mozzarella, Vaideki Jai
Master's Theses
The chemical composition of milk (specifically casein, fat, and calcium) is known to affect the quality and functional properties of Mozzarella cheese. Therefore, concentrations of total nitrogen, casein nitrogen, non-casein nitrogen, non-protein nitrogen, true nitrogen, casein nitrogen to total nitrogen ratio, casein nitrogen to true nitrogen ratio, fat, total calcium, total solids, somatic cells, and pH were measured in silo milk samples collected weekly over 18-months from a large dairy plant in Central Valley, California from July 2008 to December 2009 to verify changes and correlate to low moisture part skim Mozzarella (LMPS) characteristics. LMPS mozzarella cheese from the same …

The Effect Of Weather During Rearing On Morphometric Traits Of Juvenile Cliff Swallows, Erin A. Roche, Mary Bomberger Brown, Charles R. Brown
The Effect Of Weather During Rearing On Morphometric Traits Of Juvenile Cliff Swallows, Erin A. Roche, Mary Bomberger Brown, Charles R. Brown
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Episodes of food deprivation may change how nestling birds allocate energy to the growth of skeletal and feather morphological traits during development. Cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) are colonial, insectivorous birds that regularly experience brief periods of severe weather–induced food deprivation during the nesting season which may affect offspring development. We investigated how annual variation in timing of rearing and weather were associated with length of wing and tail, skeletal traits, and body mass in juvenile cliff swallows reared in southwestern Nebraska during 2001–2006. As predicted under conditions of food deprivation, nestling skeletal and feather measurements were generally smaller …

A Retrospective Observational Study Of Maximal Enteral Nutrition Rates In A Burn Patient Population, Stephanie Phillips
A Retrospective Observational Study Of Maximal Enteral Nutrition Rates In A Burn Patient Population, Stephanie Phillips
Theses & Dissertations
Enteral nutrition (EN) is frequently interrupted in the critically ill patient, which can lead to nutritional deficits and severe weight and lean body mass loss. Increased EN rates are being used more frequently to account for these interruptions. This study examined the maximum hourly EN rate (MAX rate) received by each subject and evaluated outcomes and tolerance in an effort to determine if there is a maximum threshold for the EN rate in this population. This retrospective observational study was conducted on an adult population admitted to a major burn center during a three year period who received EN and …
